johnmucci, cut the driveshaft 2.25 inches (2 1/4"). That is the difference in the distance of the axle centerline to the yoke u joint centerline when going from a 7 1/4 to an 8 3/4. Orv

    Rear end, driveshaft questions...

2112, you would shorten your driveshaft 2.25in only if you were changing from a 7 1/4 to an 8 3/4 rear. I can't remember the difference for an 8 1/4. Orv

Column to Floor Auto shift '66 Dart

NorthernSwede. If you don't care if you have a stock floor shifter, use one of Lokars' shifter. I have a Lokar double bend Nostalgia shifter in my 65 Valiant with a bench seat. There are other aftermarker shifters out there, get Summit or some other vendor cataloge or go online and find one.

    Question about various rear ends

    Small Block. Great info but I was under the impression that a 489 case was 1 7/8" (1.875) and a 742 had a 1 3/4" (1.750). The 741 has 1 3/8" (1.375). By the way the Ford 9" has a 1.303" if I'm not mistaken. Orv

    Powertrax Lock Right

Bobscuda67- I have had a Lock Rite in my '65 Valiant (built 360, 727, 8 3/4) for over 2 years and 10K miles. Unless you like to have a heavy foot going around corners in town it is very streetable.

    arb air locker

inkjunkie, Detroit makes a great electric locker, much simpler than an air locker, no compressor etc. Open rear until you flick the switch. Auburn also makes one but it is in conjuction with their posi unit. I know what you mean about different size tires in case of a flat. I run a Richmond...

    741

340Mopar is right. 741 case pinion is 1.375, Ford 9" is 1.313. As you can see the "small" Mopar is larger than the exalted Ford 9" in pinion size, thus should be A OK.

    Drive Shaft

65Vart. the distance listed in the posted chart is correct. If you are staying with your same trans( either manual or auto) you are just changing the distance of the centerline of axle to the centerline of the yoke. 7 1/4 is 10.09, 8 3/4 is 12.35. The difference is 2.24 or approx 2 1/4inches...

Best way to temporarily block off heater hoses?

Useless, I used rubber stoppers from the local hardware store. They come in different sizes and you just put them in the hose and put the hoses back on. They block off the flow and are easy to take back off. Cheap too, about $.35 cents each. Work great and everything looks stock.

    2 speed rear end

god.favored, Cudavert is right in regards to the Rambler OD. But Columbia made a very popular 2 speed rearend that was installed in many 30's and 40's Fords. Every now and then a car is listed on Ebay or some other auction site with the Columbia option.

    Tubular upper control arms

63Belvedere, I put Magnmun Racing tubes on my 65 Valiant. Besides looking good, they have more bushing contact area and really firmed up the feel of the front suspension. Plus they are built with more caster and camber adjustability. They are worth the few extra bucks compared to rebuilding...

    Speedometer Calibration Help Needed

duster maniac, You might be able to correct it buy installing a smaller driven gear. You're speedo is approx. 24% slow. For example if you have a 36 tooth driven gear you would need a 28 tooth driven gear. I don't know if they make such a small gear. If not, then as Fishy68 says you will need...

    7 1/4 Vs 8 1/4

DesertRat, since the 8 1/4 is actually narrower than an A-body 7 1/4' 53.20" vs. 51.40" (1.8" total or .9" on either side) it should be an easy fit. I did a 7 1/4 to and early 8 3/4 (same measurements as above) in my '65 Valiant with no problems. Have a good day.

    Drive shaft length

RedFish, 7 1/4 in. rear centerline of axle to centerline of rear u-joint is 10.09 inches. 8 1/4 is 11.69 for same measurement. Hence, shorten driveshaft 1.6 inches. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't both a 67 and a 75 considered late a-bodies with the same wheelbase? If it was a 66 it...

    is it true need info

silver fox. From what I understand if you don't run above the stall it overheats the trans fluid which can damage the trans after a while. The way I check stall is left foot on brake, bring up the rpm's and see at what rpm's the rear tires start to spin. Just an approximation, but close. I...

    Powetrax lock right issues

TimDart. I have a Richmond Full Locker in my '65 Valiant (360, 727, 8 3/4). If you drive it like an open rear around corners you'll have that problem. Just have a heavy foot on the straights. In the instructions I received with mine these very issues were noted. LML (love my locker).
