New starter won’t fit due to headers

Thanks for the tip Rusty! The rebuilt starter is great. I looked at the 08 starter and the nose looks like it was too short and may not fully engage the flywheel. Do you think this won’t be a problem (for future reference)?

New starter won’t fit due to headers

I took @Topless69 advice and found a local rebuilder. $150 and a week and a half later, here it is ready for reinstall. I do think it is a RobbMc starter. The shop said that the nose piece looked like it was made by a machine shop. He put a new solenoid, bushings, brushes on it and will...

New starter won’t fit due to headers

I have a slow cranking when hot issue, so I figured I would just change the starter with a new one. The original one looked old and maybe it was tired. I ordered a new mini starter and found that it is not even close to fitting. I thought the original started was a mini too, but it looks...

Like a bomb went off under the hood...

The radiator cap is supposed to release pressure at 16 psi. If it doesn’t, it allows pressure to build in the entire cooling system until something blows. At that point, it is the path of least resistance. You were probably lucky that the hose popped off instead of something else blowing...

1967 Barracuda Gets the 340 It Deserves

My 67 Cuda vert has a similar dream. I found my 340 a few years ago (as seen in this photo). Took 2.5 years for the machine shop to finish all machine work. It sits beneath my workbench, awaiting assembly. I loaned my engine stand and cherry picker to a friend so he could replace his...

I'd make a call to the head manufacturer before grinding anything. But it does look like an easy fix.

Just an old hose. Replace it and then test drive it again. Welcome to FABO!!!

    Dissapointing performance

Yes, I read that he said that, but did he know how to do it right or did he just set it up at 110 degrees? I was just asking him to double check this AJ. That's all. I've seen some pretty funky things when guys were "following the instructions carefully"!

    Dissapointing performance

Sorry Dusterguy, but I don,t have time to read 6 pages of posts. But from what I did read, I didn't hear what setting you degreed your cam to. It is a 110 degree cam but it is supposed to be installed at 106 degrees. I believe that some folks even set them to 104. What did you set it to...

My 340 in my 66 developed issues :-(

The passenger side is not the hipo manifold. Keep the driver side and look for a magnum version for the passenger side. One member on here sells them. Then get the pipes to fit them here: TTi Exhaust Component Parts

It will run out of steam if you have weak valve springs! Time for double spring upgrade.

    340 Value Questions

Yes, these engines are special because they were built by the factory to be high performance engines. There were no lo-po 340s made. Beyond this, this engine has gained a sort of cult following due to its legendary performance.

Why is one 340 connecting rod bronze color?

The machine shop said that it was not damaged. Just a casting defect that should have been rejected. Both end holes were parallel still. No hammer marks on it. I will not be running it again!

What would cause such a thing?

That was probably the cause. You can't always hear pinging, that's why they install knock sensors in computer controlled engines. Though you could have retarded the timing to prevent it, if you only knew.

Why is one 340 connecting rod bronze color?

I found this rod in my 340 engine. It's not bent, but it sure looks funky!

What would cause such a thing?

Yes. I bought an old 340 and when I tore it down, 7 of the cylinders had one broken ring and the 8th had both rings broken. Probably due to detonation, but possibly broke on initial installation too. It all depends on when the compression loss started, either immediately or after being run for...

My 340 is running hot I think.. I need a sanity check.

You said that the lower hose isn't collapsing when you look at it idling, but it may be a much different story when highway driving or quickly accelerating. Grab it when it's cold and squeeze to feel the interior anti-collapse spring. If you don't feel the spring, it is missing and is...

340 head gasket leaking with sleeves

If the engine is together and runnable, then put some Blue Devil in your radiator and the leaks will be permanently sealed. Here are some reviews: Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer - 16 Ounce (00209) I have used it twice with full success in sealing my head...

    340 Build

You should get, beg or borrow an engine book. It would explain the theory and practicalities of all the things you will need to know about building the engine you want. Then you will know why you should choose or do everything that you will need.

This is why you can't trust anyone to work on your car.

When I was still a teenager, my mother took an after work course on car maintenance, taught by one of the men that worked with her. Then she did her own oil change at home and guess who was the next person to use her car. As I was driving from Philly to the shore in NJ, on a double date...

    Head gasket leak

You could put in a $50 bottle of Blue Devil coolant leak sealant. It was made to fix leaks in head gaskets and it really does work well. Fixed up 3 out of 3 engines for me. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NOO798/?tag=joeychgo-20

Xs 2! Also, I've read that HV oil pumps may run the pan dry and hence cause low oil pressure problems. I' sure others on this site can weigh-in if my recollection is accurate or not.:violent1:

oil light flickering at high rpm

Did you install a high volume oil pump during the build? If so, it may be draining the oil pan at higher RPMs and the heavier oil weight will be draining back slower than needed. The first step is an accurate gauge to be sure this isn't a false reading.

    Squiggly Con Rod Castings?

My machine shop found a funky rod on my 340! He said that he thought is wasn't due to damage and that it was missed by the QC checkers. It spec-ed out OK, but he wouldn't recommend trusting it in the rebuild.
