Small Block Stroker ... Gas mileage?

Whoa! slightly an old thread has been stirred up here. But, any info on Stroker gas mileage is good. Now with Ontario's new 8% Tax on gas, it's even more important not to burn up too many dinosaurs. I'm using a Tremec 5 spd OD, 3.55 gears, hydraulic roller cam duration 274/282, Lift...

    Oil??

You could likely use any oil as long as you add some zinc additive if using a flat tappet cam. Some good info on Zddp (zinc) on this site. http://www.zddplus.com/

    Oil??

I'm using Amsoil 15w-50 "racing" oil. It has a lot of zinc in it. Zinc is needed to protect your flat tappet cam! but, bad for your catalytic converter. Not really a big issue here. :-D If you don't want to spend $11 a quart for racing oil. Use motorcycle oil. Motorcycle oils are very high in...

    help for the chevy guy

You'll be good with the 318 mounts. I think they are all the same.

    help for the chevy guy

You'll need a new to add a weight to your existing 318 torque converter. The 360 is externally ballanced. You can also buy a flex plate that has the counter balance built in. Then any neutrally ballanced converter will work.

    SB Header fittment (cheapos).

Be aware of the flange thickness on the Headmans. (only 1/4" thick) They tend to bend easily when torqued. I'm running Dynomax headers and the fit is ok. Also, the thicker flange is a bonus (5/16") I'm not running with power steering. (if that matters) Hope this helps,

    360 LA or Magnum?

My vote is for the one that has the roller cam in it! (360 Magnum)

    sb difference fuel consumption

You can grind the crank mains, no problem. (and it's inexpensive). It's the custom pistons that you need for a .030 over 340 block, that will cost a lot of coin. If the 340 block can be cleaned up with only .020" removed then standard off the shelf .060" over 360 pistons will work and not...

    need help deciding

Do up the 360! It will be cheaper to make big power. Then, down the road, you can stroke it. Oh, what fun! :-D

Gasket Match ? Block to Timing Cover

I'm thinking that this high flow pump I have now, will possibly only flow at the rate of a regular 6 blade. Just for the fact that I'm driving the water pump with only a 5" crank pully. (28 percent slower than stock) Right now, the thing runs really hot with only the 360. I'm trying to make...

Gasket Match ? Block to Timing Cover

I'll probably end up doing it anyway. I have a 8 blade water pump which is suppose to flow more water for the use of aluminum heads. I might as well make the flow as non-turbulent as possible. If nothing else it's a psychological gain in power.:-D Thanks, Mark

Gasket Match ? Block to Timing Cover

Just wondering if anyone has gasket matched the timing cover to the block. Looking down inside there is a nasty step that could be easily removed with a die grinder. By removing this, would it benifit the cooling any? The red line on the pic represents the gasket / timing cover placement

No oil to my rockers AARGH! HELP!

bobscuda67 and 70aarcuda are right. The rocker shafts are only pressurized when the hole in the #2 and #4 cam journals line up with the hole in the cam as it rotates. If you are worried about a dry start up. Have a buddy turn the motor by hand (slowly) while you run the oil pump with the...

how to get deck hight and piston info

I misunderstood your measurement. I have zero deck height on the brain. I'm building a block right now that's using zero height. If you say your using 9.5" minus the 9.6"(stock deck height) you should be .100" in the hole. You will need an accurate method of measuring the depth when you do...

how to get deck hight and piston info

I'm just guessing here. But, if you say that the piston has a dome on it. Chances are that the comp ratio will be more than 9.5 or even 10. Most flat top's (no dome) will give you 9.5. Pump gas may be out of the question then. also, After looking at BME's site, It looks as though they...

19 mpg you say ? That's not far off the combo that I'm looking at. Have you ever run your car at the strip? Times? Thanks, Mark

Small Block Stroker ... Gas mileage?

I figure the motor should make 375 ft/lbs of torque at 1800rpm. This would be a 60mph cruise speed. I may have to back down the cam duration a bit to get the desired results. Thanks for your input guys.

Small Block Stroker ... Gas mileage?

Hi guys/gals, I'm looking at building a 422 stroker. I know it's kind of an oxymoron but, is it possible to get decent gas mileage with a stroker? I'm aiming for 20 mpg. with 92-94 octane. The cam that I'm looking at is a Comp Cam roller with 274/282 duration, .538/.534 lift...
