    Aluminum cylinder heads

If it were me I would go with the closed chamber and thicker head gasket, just in case you end up rebuilding your motor or put those heads on another short block you can zero deck your pistons. Let us know how it runs after the change, I have the same type of pistons in my 340 as you do and...

    408 Scat Stroker Kits

How is the balance on the kits? I have seen guys with other kits buy the cast to save a few bucks and end up spending more than a forged kit getting it in balance. If the Scat kit is balanced right it shouldn't be a problem though.

    Swapping X's for Trick Flows

Can't wait to see how it runs for ya. I have been looking at buying a set of heads and the trick flows look like the way to go. I was going to put them on my 340 for now until I get a short block stroker put together.

    5.9 ballancer/ early timing cover

You need a piston stop, run it up close to tdc going clockwise and then go back counter clockwise and use the middle of the 2 marks. Now you have tdc.

    340 X heads advice

It has been a while since I had any machine work done, but in my area I bet you would have right around $1k in those heads to do a total rebuild with good parts, ready to bolt on and go, not including cost of the heads themselves, and that is if they are still good and able to be rebuilt.

    340 X heads advice

If it were me I would look at buying some EQ heads bare and have them set up the way you want them or look at IMM engines website. They have them ready to go with 202 valves. They are a better flowing head than any stock passenger car head also. IMMENGINES.COM

is it worth the effort? (cam)

I agree, and initial advance is going to be what the combo will take, might have to fill and file the slots on the advance to get the dizzy advance lower. My 340 has 20 initial, any more than that and it kicks back the starter when the engine is up to temp.

is it worth the effort? (cam)

A rebuilt dizzy and an FBO limiting plate are a good option if you can't find the MP dizzy, they were a copy of the accell dizzy I think.

Degreeing Cam / Offset Keys available?

I have used the Mr Gasket Chevy crank key for an offset cam key in a 340. When I degreed the cam, IIRC the 2 degree Chevy crank key gave me 4 degrees advance.

    Still W2 Headache

Does your head look like this on the intake side? Looks like 48 degree stuff is cut for push rods to go through. The casting number I think is the same for 48 and 59 degree stuff, just part number is different.

    See through valve covers?

No need for clear valve covers to make sure your lifters rotate, you can turn the engine over by hand before initial start up to confirm they rotate. If you wait until start up it is probably already too late.

    Question about heads

At the very least you should lap new valves in and look at the valve and seat to see if the angles are the same after lapping. And also check the guide clearance.
