......so would i time in distributor in at 10-12 degrees with a timing light for initial? and then mess with the vacum advance on the distributor to get it to 30+ for the total timing?

thanks for all the awesome info dgc333! i am wanting to build a 400-500 horsepower motor, what would be a good cam for this set up? should i just get the heads rebuilt back to stock? or maybe get better valves, springs, and rocker asseblies to achive numbers like this?

well i just did a compresion check on it and it was as follows: 1:129 2:131 3:149 4:155 5:130 6:150 7:120(dunno if i had a good seal cuz the header was in the way) 8:135 now if i come back with higher numbers like this wouldn't this elimate my head gaskets?

Questions is there any difference between a set of 67 and 71 318 heads? i've got the 71's on my car now with a few bad valves and have a set of possibly good 67 heads. i was gonna swap them out if there isn't a difference?? thanks adam

Yeah it was 34, and i got the same numbers after i put some oil in the cylinder. i was kinda stunned myself. but i'll do a warm test tonight, can't i just hold the gas down all the way while i'm cranking it over? how long do you guys suggest to crank it?
