Worth it to balance rotating assembly?

...not reserved just for older Mopar engines...I brought a stock 302 from a 91 Mustang and it still required balancing with the OE pistons.

    383/438 Build

Sounds cool man-just shoot me a message when you think you'll be headed this direction. I have another 4.6 block and heads sitting on a stand with some heads on it, as a backup, but it isn't anywhere near built yet. I need to balance the recip assembly, get another set of covers, oil pan...

    383/438 Build

Oh yeah? Do you recall what he did? I first arrived here in September of 96. I PCSd out in '13 to Hawaii and left there end of '15 to South Dakota (Ellsworth). I retired from there end of '16 and came back to Dyess for a job with AFETS. So, I still work on base, literally across the hall...

I also have a foxbody; an 84GT hence the screen name. I tore it down to the unibody last summer, but it hasn't been driven since about 2011. I let a guy talk me into swapping over from the blown 5.0 I did have to a 4.6 4V...you see what year it is...and the car is still without an engine...

    383/438 Build

Gonna be an awesome ride-bet it sounds downright nasty through those pipes. We just had our cruise night last weekend-this would've been a nice little departure to see from the typical rides. Not too many Mopars (other than new Chargers and Challengers) around here let alone A bodies...

    Building a 383 help

no one here is making the man spending his money, fish--I, for one, just don't want the OP to randomly select a bunch of parts that have no chance of working together or, maybe build a decent engine and not be able to put the power down...I figured you'd agree, no?

    Building a 383 help

You're making assumptions, and the OP isn't providing all relevant info...a recipe for disappointment. The OP is asking to build a 383 to put in a Barracuda with: High enough power to walk away from a 454 with a supposed 550hp (unverified) in a chassis about 400lbs heavier, with unknown...

    Building a 383 help

Having "...a lot of horsepower..." and "...low end torque for acceleration..." out of a 383 is gonna be a pretty tall order to beat a 454 with 550+ hp unless his is a dog or has zero traction...and it won't be cheap if you build it right. You can make a 383 put down enough power to walk away...

Shameless plug for installing the engine from underneath...if you have the correct tools. Yes, you should have your alignment checked afterward Yes, you need to reconnect steering shaft Yes, you might need to do some other stuff But: It's how the factory installed it, you don't have to dork...

Parts I purchased today for my 383 budget build any suggestions

:( that sucks...must be more than a little surface rust. Even a dingle ball hone can remove a pretty good bit of sin. Anyway, fishmens67 didn't know you had a 400 block. If you have one of those, the cubes are always a good option. Even with a stock stroke one, you can still use the same...

Parts I purchased today for my 383 budget build any suggestions

the KB 400s will net you anywhere between 9:1 depending on where they are in relation to the deck height what gasket you use and how the heads cc out. Just for argument sake: 88cc chambers, which is typical for open chamber heads 020 below the deck .040x4.40 gasket (typical) ~ 9.2:1 same...

440 six pack pistons and some questions

They have no grooves for locks anyway, so press fit is the intended method. But, yes, have the rods recon'd

440 six pack pistons and some questions

Take a read through here: 'Pop's Engine' another 440 on the dyno. If you're not familiar with reading IQ52's posts, he does LOTS of 440 stuff...this was his Pop's engine, and if I recall correctly, a 440 with those same pistons

Interesting-did they give you two different casting numbers? It almost looks like they mixed up a closed chamber and an open chamber head. Probably a moot point, but do you have a couple pix you can post?

I believe that's Summit's version of a Mallory HyFire system; I've contemplated using them, just never actually pulled the trigger. The directions are almost a carbon copy and the function/specs look exactly the same.

    440 or built 360 71 demon

You really need to define what you want out of your powerplant. There are guys that run pretty healthy and drivable 360s that can run 10s or 11s...there are also guys that just want the mystique of popping the hood at looking at a big block, even if it is stock. If you just want a stock big...
