You hit the nail right on the head, sometimes when the primary idle circuit is too rich and the mixture screws are unresponsive this can be a great remedy...look for the idle transfer slots on the primary side to be covered or the carb will think it's not at idle and run rich,this is true on...

well yes it draws fresh air from the outside of the engine and evacuates crankcase gasses,but it's a small amount of crankcase gasses to a larger amount of fresh air that get's burned.so really it has many advantages over not running one.

sounds like the vent tube is clogged,there should be a vent tube connected to the filler tube the end of it may be clogged
