I've always wanted a 62 Lancer but recently got a line on a 61 V200. What excites me is the fact that it is a 50k mile, stored 25 years barn find. It truly looks like a 5 YO car. These cars just plain dissolved in SE PA. I started driving in 1977 and i can truthfully say that i have *never* seen one on the road here.
This car is a four door, 170, pushbutton auto, radio, heater, full wheelcovers. I'd really like to reel this road toad in.
Fender tag shows a build date of 7/19 which i believe to be 1960 based on the 170 and the black painted headlight doors.
Any other clues I should be looking at?
Here are a couple shots:

That's a '61 model, through and through. Grille, grille badge/hood release, deck lid centre badge, "Plymouth" nameplate ('60 Valiants were not Plymouths!), and triple "sergeant stripes" atop tailfins are easy giveaways; there are more we can't see in these photos. How are you discerning a build date from the fender tag?

@ Dan

Bottom left corner indicates scheduled build date month and day.

I've read that 1) the early 61s had only the 170. With this car having all the other options including the automatic I'm betting it would have gotten the 225 if it were available at the time and 2) the black paint around the headlight openings was discontinued at some point during the 61 model run.

The VIN will tell all but at the tiime I looked at the car the keys were MIA. The seller has them but had misplaced them. I'll be able to get inswide the car later this week.

You could be right, I'm not sure "0719" means July 19 on the early tags as it would on the later tags. I will read up on it when I'm at the office tomorrow and post '61 tag and number decode if I don't get interrupted.

225 was very-late-'61 availability on Valiants, deliberately held back to use the optional 225 to draw buyers to the more expensive new Lancer. Other clues: alternator on passenger side of engine (driver's side in '60), intake manifold made out of cast iron (aluminum in '60), black text on white background instrument cluster (white text on black background in '60), one single central dash turn signal indicator (separate left and right in '60), white dash knobs and pushbutton sleeves (black in '60), red and blue Valiant "V" logo in steering wheel centre (red-and-white crest and/or gold cursive "Valiant" script on red field in '60), ceramic ballast resistor (metal-housed resistor in '60)...

I finally got to speak with the seller and look inside the car. VIN is 1316214XXX so the car is definiely a *late* 61. Really surprises me. I was expecting 100543 or some such thing.
Doesn't really matter, especially since the seller is hung up on $4k. I really like the car but have been down this road before. Only 50k miles but I *know* what it will take to go through the brake and fuel systems, get tires, etc. I'll keep trying but if somebody driving by wants to part with $4k -- oh well...

OK, time to bump this thread, here is a photo of my latest find, a '62 Lancer 170 Wagon.
I have a few questions, who is the expert? after looking at the Dart Lancer brochure from Dodge, my Lancer is trimmed halfway between the 170 and 770 models. while I don't have the knobs on my bumpers like the 770, I do have the stainless around the windows, rear quarter trim and reverse lights. my tailgate trim clearly says 170 and can't possibly have been changed. what gives? can we work on maybe getting some good info put down here on what's right and what's wrong on the Valiant Lancer models? I've downloaded and found the brochures for several years and models if someone with better knowledge is willing to help out with this.

My 62 not in a barn find. was left outside unloved for 22 years before I got it. Anyone have a front valance (under bumper) or hood trim they don't want?

Saw this 62' Wagon at Pigeon forge a couple weeks back. Really well done with a 3rd Gen Hemi in it. The owner says the solid sides are factory ????? He claims there were about 50 made this way. Never heard of it beofre?

What would you have to have for the tail lights shipped to 68467? Someone took a hammer and broke the center out on both of them. I fixed them with the lenses from some cheep marker lights but I don't know how long they will last.
