1963 Dodge Dart 270 Convertible for the Wife

And away we go... took a couple of shots of whisky to push the order buttons from Classic, Year One, DMT and Summit but most of the parts required are on order (one of the side benefits of restoring 2 other Mopars, I know the parts I need off the top of my head!).....

Lots of hot greasy work today that does not show up as a lot of visible progress but the front suspension is stripped and bagged, the rear axel is out and the springs are ready for blasting. The /6 is coming apart...

A broken sharp screwdriver is all you need to get the dried-out bushing out.

Looks like maybe a virgin block! No oversized piston stamping.

Now that is what you call WAY down in the bore!

Head looks good, no burnt valves.

Sending these to Vacuum Orna-Metal for restoration and replating in the morning..

That's the same place I contacted to have my dash replated and also the future 3d printed parts! Anxious to see how they turn out for you. Kids needed clothes for school so plating will have to wait a little longer.

I will let you know. Frank has been SUPER responsive to questions and discussions.

We have almost talked ourselves into welding up the side trim holes. The car has a few panel from different cars so none of the trim lines up very well so at the very least the doors and fenders needs to be welded so they can be installed in a straight line. The vibe of the car is sporty and to us that chrome says sophistication..... What do you think?

I love the look of the trim but after many hours of taking out dents, I don't know that I'd do it again. We did have the radio antenna hole plugged and painted over. I felt like that was an improvement. I also had front grill chrome plated hoping it would add more strength against future dents.

I can't fathom how our grill is almost flawless. One or two little dings is all it has. The side trim is not all that bad for dents (the trunk lip trim is another story). We are torn as the trim does make some of the personality of the car but we do want it to have an alter personality. The dark turquoise with the white hood/trunk stripe and then some lower side stripes like the Coronet never had (story goes these were dealer installed but there are no known examples in existence). I think this stripe would really play off the Darts lines.

I could see the side stripes working. That's a lot of holes to fill.

Here are a couple pictures of my original valance after blasting and primer. Not perfect by any means but no hidden Bondo) dents either.

If you don't mind me asking what did you go with for a wiring harness? And were you replacing just the dash harness or front to back all new?
Thanks

I ended up ordering the 1965 harnesses front to rear, one they were in stock. Two, they had the independent studs for the alternator to the amp meter where 1964 they went away from the independent studs and we’re more like The later cars. Also in 65 the bulkhead connector got a little bigger apparently so I’m going to have to modify the firewall slightly. I’ll do that after I decide I can get the wiring figured out. The wiring is all for V-8’s so of course they’ll be some modifications but as long as all the connectors are there that’s the main thing.

With each new restoration I find something that I hated about the previous and want to buy the tools to make this one that much easier. Case in point a nice 35 CFM refrigerated compressed air drier with new regulator and micron filter was shipped today from Georgia. Nice dry air for blasting and painting should make those tasks much less painful. Once the water gets to the blaster nozzle it starts not being fun....

So you drop top guys. How do you get those top springs un-done without them killing you?

Good grief, I have over a dozen boxes coming of parts and tools. I have a problem. Is there a support group for this sort of thing? I can't afford to do this again....

I think this is the best support group and it's covered by all/no insurance companies with small annual co-pay of $45. As a newer member this is best therapy I ever had

Your to new to understand then! Have you seen my other two builds.... All these guys (and the B-Body guys) do is ENCOURAGE you to spend money!

If someone else blasting the parts is in your budget go for it!

And loose the argument for buying new tools? Your talking crazy man! I really thought about that but then I decided I needed a lot of blasting on the body which I don't have a way to get that to the blaster (plus I don't trust anyone to not stretch the metal).

I seen your earlier pictures and thought the same thing. Mine are power tops and they have rams, a lot easier, looking at the picture. Seems to me that at the relaxed point ,with the top completely up would be the point of attack and the least load on the spring. Hopefully someone will chime in with real help for you. I will be watching and learning. I really applaud you on all your efforts.

I had no idea there was such a thing as a manual factory top. How many parts do I need to make it power?

I'm not completely sure but I bet a couple of the rams, the hydraulic lines to operate them, the pump and probably the mount for the pump that spans the inner fenderwell in the top well. Also the wiring and toggle switch to operate it. I have a 64 GT Convertible Project if you need pictures, but off the top of my head that's kind of what I believe you would need

I warned him someone is waiting to see how well mine come out to decide if they are going to send theirs in for plating. Hoping that makes him do mine extra good.
