I am in the process of rebuilding my 273 -4 barrel engine and have found code numbers to verify the heads and block as correct and original...but the intake manifold is an odd number
4100340, that I can't seem to match up. and looks like it should be for a 340 or spreadbore carb setup. Can anyone help me on this please?

Yes, that is a Thermoquad intake and won't work on 64 and 65 273 heads without some butchering. Give me a min. for the correct numbers.

The factory intake casting # is 2465726

Mid-late 1970s intake there. Ports are much bigger than the 273 ports. The intake will work, but it's not ideal.

Thank you for the feedback! I bought the car 3 years ago and we've spent a lot trying to make it look good. The engine ran excellent with plenty of power and A833 4 speed, but developed a rattle in the lower end so I decided to take it out and go through it. The engine has hydraulic lifers and with the intake set up being different, I figured I need to know what I'm working with before going forward. It has an aftermarket Edelbrock carburetor. The head castings are 2465315-2and block is 2806030-273-7 , are these correct for the 65 year?
Thanks for your help!!

I'm curious as to why they would install a late model intake...it did run very well but had a low end rattle so that's why I'm taking it apart. Also has hydraulic lifters ...not original solid lifters.
Thank you for your response!

The heads are correct for a 64 and 65 273 but the block casting (2806030) is listed as a 67-74 318 casting.
#2806130 is a 273 casting for 65-69 273.
Sometimes the numbers are hard to read.
It sounds like you have a mix/match of parts there.

I just looked in a different book (that I probably need to throw away). This book written by the same guy lists the #2806030 as a 66-69 273 block.
That makes more sense. In 68 and 69 the 273's had hydraulic lifters and the 273-7 tells me it was a late casting. The "7" is the 7th casting change from the original casting.

Oh okay...then that explains why there's hydraulic lifters vs, solid. Thanks again for your help and response!! Now I just have to find the rattle in the lower end!

I dont know how they got that manifold to fit on a 64-65 head (blocks were the same) as the intake bolts are a different size (5/16) and angle! Did the bolts look like they lined up flush to the holes? It can be done but you need to lean a drill over in the manifold holes to make them at least line up (more vertical) then use hardened washers under the bolts and youll still probably have oil seepage there. Interesting......never seen a cast iron intake adapted like that.

I've only had minor seeping from the front intake manifold gasket. The bolts all had washers under them i believe.
this picture is just before I pulled the intake off.

well, they used 360/4 intakes on the 4bbl 318 so the port match is not a huge deal but its not ideal. I fit works, use it. I think you'd be better off with a Performer with its 318 ports and easily modded intake bolt holes. AL is a lot softer than cast iron!

So...now a decision....should I change heads to 318 heads and if so will the stock 273 exhaust manifolds fit?...or keep what I have and but the Edelbrock 2176 Intake as you mentioned and adjust the bolt holes?

? Any other thoughts or recommendations?
Thanks again!!

Any 66 and up 273/318 heads would be good even the late 80's #302 casting head. They have AIR ports below the exhaust ports that needs to be plugged but they work well. Find a closed chamber head so you don't loose compression. The exhaust manifolds will fit. That Edelbrock intake will work fine as well as a Weiand Stealth which has smaller ports than the 340/360 manifolds. The old Edelbrock LD4B is a good choice for a 273/318 as well but they haven't been made for decades and can go for a few hundred $$ if you can find one.

Be careful with later model heads like the 302’s. They have a coolant passage “bump” that the earlier heads did not have. This causes interference with stock 273 exhaust manifolds. Ask me how I know that you can’t grind much off of the head bump.

Your rattle in the lower end is probably either a wrist pin with a loose bushing, or a rod cap that was getting ready to give up. On the intake bolt deal....look around on here and see if you can find a thread that was going about that a while back. Somebody posted about some 6 or 8 degree wedge washers they used under the intake bolt heads to even things up when using early 273 heads like you have, with a later intake. If you wrap a round or two of Teflon tape on the intake bolts starting about 3 threads in....you won't have oil creeping up the threads and ponding up in your intake. Good luck with your build....starting on my 273 build for my 65 Barracuda soon myself!

Thank you for the input! I'll be sure to check those carefully as I take it apart! The tape on the threads of the bolts is a good idea for the intake. I really appreciate everyone's feedback! I'm 70 years old and haven't taken an engine apart in over 30 years! Time to relearn!

A lot will depend on how much you want to keep stock, and how much you're willing to change......and your budget for doing it. If you want to keep it stock, get the correct '65 273 4bbl intake and a carb to match. That will be a bolt-on and no mods needed. If you want to go with the later small block stuff, the sky's the limit. Keep the valve size down (use only 273 and 318 heads and not the big port 340/360 versions) and don't overcam it. Later large chamber heads would need higher compression pistons to keep the ratio and power up. Later close chambered heads will need some mods, both for plugging unneeded holes and, as mentioned by Commando66, some grinding on the driver's side to get clearance for the stock exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold ports will match up with any of the small block, small port, cylinder heads.

So if I keep the parts I have and put everything back on like it came off. What would you recommend for a performance camshaft set up? Hoping everything in the bottom end is okay and no major issues.
Thanks again for your input!!
