1966 426 Street Hemi ~ Production Numbers

-
Mark at least one of the '66 Satelite Hardtop autos off the list. My aunt had a black one in '70. Slid it off the road in the rain at about 15mph. Rolled over on its side in the ditch. They ended up selling the car to a local engine builder who pulled the hemi and 727 then sold the body off. The car was then sold to a local drag racer who stuck a 383 in it and raced it.

When my aunt got the car, she simply thought it was pretty, and wasn't aware of what a Hemi was. The previous owner was going into the military and allegedly had the 426 blueprinted and tweaked as well as the 727. My dad, who was a die hard Chevy guy, drove the car several times. He described it as being ludicrous and unforgiving. He's got several neat stories about using it to beat unsuspecting racer boys. Nobody paid much attention to a stock looking black Satelite.

Hell, those stories are part of the reason I swung towards Mopars instead of Chevys.

There's at least one other confirmed 66 Coronet 4 Door. Car was in Canada last I saw it and owned at the time by the same guy who had the red car.
There is also a factory built 67 Belvedere in either Sweden or Finland. I've seen pics of the cars Hemi specific bits and VIN tag.

The '1st' 1966 Plymouth Belvedere Station Wagon '426 Street Hemi'

Ordered from;
Whitbeck Motors
2688 Sixth Avenue
Troy, New York

Date> February 3, 1966

Customer;
North Hudson Marina
Bolton's Landing, New York

Received> April 7, 1966

Details
North Shore Marina was the primary Chrysler Marine Dealer around the Lake George, New York area. They had 'some pull'' with the
Chrysler Factory.

They wanted a 'torque monster' to haul their customer's Racing Boats and Cabin Cruisers to the docks.

They 'special ordered' a 1966 Belvedere Station Wagon with a '426 Street Hemi' on February 3, 1966.

They never had plans to 'race' the Station Wagon, as it was to be used as a 'hauling vehicle only'.

The car was ordered through Whitbeck Motors, as they were the primary Plymouth Dealership in the area, and one that could procure 'specialty' vehicles from the factory.

Whitbeck Motors was also a 'player' in getting performance vehicles
and they sponsored F/X and Super/Stock Drag Racer 'Wild' Bill Rubin, a big name racer in the Capitol District.

Research states, that North Hudson Marina used the Station Wagon for Boat Towing purposes for about 5-Years, until 1971.

The 426 Hemi had suffered an engine problem {wiped Camshaft},
and they took it out-of-service.

They stored the Belvedere in one of their Boat Storage buildings.
The Belvedere sat for about 6-Years.

Around 1977, a guy by the name of Mike Bonner from West Glens Falls, New York heard about the Belvedere, and bought the car for $1400.
He had plans to re-do the car, and build it for a 'Street Performance Car'.

Mike took it home, but the Belvedere sat in his garage for nearly 3-Years.

In 1980, Mike got around to pulling the 426 Hemi Engine. But he
decided to sell it, and let it go for $700.

A short time later, he sold off the Torqueflite Transmission and
'special' Transmission Cooler for about $200.

Then he sold the Belvedere car {roller} itself for $125 in 1982.

'Poof, Gone'

This is from 1969.

SS/G had a weight break of 8.50 to 8.99 Wt/HP in that year.

'The Skinny'

In 1969, the NHRA factored the 426 Street Hemi at 475 HP.

This Belvedere > #4100 lbs. ~ 475 HP came in with a 8.63 Wt/Hp.

In 1969, the NHRA changed up the Weight/Break for the Super Stock
Classes.

SS/G = 8.50 to 8.99 Wt/HP

1969 NHRA National Records
* SS/G ...... 11.65
* SS/GA .... 11.91

Suddenly, the 1966 Belvedere '426 Street Hemi' Station Wagon
became a desired car for SS/G or SS/GA.

But, since there were only a few of these 1966 Mammoth's built,
they were 'not' eligible for 1969 Stock Class {C/S or C/SA}.

'Poof, Gone'

Back in the early 80's I lived in NY and was very into Hemi cars...and this story rings all kinds of bells. I heard it all way back then, along with a couple of others.
Another one that I remember a little more clearly, and went hunting for myself was a supposed NYS Police ordered 68 Belvedere 4 door. I was told about this car from a couple of unrelated sources, and both described the exact same thing. Off-white/cream colored outside, blue interior, certified 150 speedometer and holes where all of the various Police car stuff went. Car was running and being used as transportation by a guy who knew what it was, but really didn't care. This was around 1982 and in the lower Upstate region.
And, speaking of 4 Door 66's, there was a guy who posted on another site not too long ago, that his parents had a 66 Belvedere Hemi. Backed up his story with pics of him as a kid standing in front of the car with the hood open, and of his mom actually lashing the valves. Story was the car stayed in the family until sometime in the early 80's, and it was stolen out of a NJ parking lot.
Lots of oddball Hemi stuff out there.

White-Punk-On-Nitro,

Being from New York {Northern Westchester County}.

Yes there were several Police Pursuit Vehicles around back then.

The 'hot locations' were the State Police Barracks off the Taconic
State Parkway {just south of Route 52}, and the Motor Pool in
Poughkeepsie.

Never found a '426 Hemi' in those Motor Pool Lots, but there were
quite a few 383's and 440's with the Police Package Torque-Flite
transmissions.

Ed Galleo had raced a 1963 Plymouth Belvedere 426/415 HP Max-Wedge Station Wagon during 1964 and 1965.

Ed wanted to get a 'new' 1966 '426 Street' Hemi Station Wagon to run in NHRA 'B/SA' for 1966.

Unfortunately for Ed, after getting the car he was 'frozen out', as the
NHRA deemed the 1966 Belvedere Station Wagon with a 426 Street Hemi as ineligible for Stock Class.

Ed then decided to campaign his 'new' 1966 Belvedere II Station Wagon in 'B/FX' for 1966, where it was 'legal'.

Word has it, that Ed had moderate success with the Belvedere in the Trophy Circuit, where it ran 12.20's @ 116 MPH.

It was lettered 'The Woolly Mammoth' on the front fenders.
