1969 Dodge Dart Swinger clean up

Beautiful Cars! One day hopefully my stable looks as clean as yours! That's a dental waxing instrument and your "dental" drill is a bit bigger than mine! Were you a dentist?

Only a Dentist would call them waxing tools. Anyone else calls them dental picks.. those things the gals make your gums bleed with! Every time I'm at the dentist I ask them for all the stuff they're throwing out. As for the drill, that's Terry's @1969dodgedart favourite "borrow" item! I build airplanes with it....

Your gums wouldn't bleed when they used them if you flossed more... lol

Yup, I have a 90° drill myself. Dont build airplanes with it, but I do fix them with it. Pan American. Damn thing was $200. I love how you changed the seals out without pulling the valve body. I dont think I could do it your way without damaging stuff. Kudos to you.

Got the old noise cans off and the new Dynaflow 17733's on and buttoned back up. Always baffled by the "my car won't start after it sits for more than a week" crowd, this thing hasn't been fired up since late November. Tap, tap, crank, stop, two taps, crank and she makes noise!

No transmission fluid puddle under the car this morning, nice to see! Wiping things off and noting how well the cosmoline dipped lower control arms and all the bare steel coating in Boeshield T-9 is holding up.

Nice, but I don't want to see it again this year...
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 003.jpg

Quick dust wipe down, fluids check and we're out from under the hood.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 009.jpg

SOOOO nice to find that the last guy ground the limiter peg off the vent glass holder post, so I was able to just pull it out vs tearing the entire interior off the door and having to remove the entire glass/frame assembly out of the door to change the glass holder.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 012.jpg

Now to separate the glass from the holder without breaking it and then to install the glass to the new pit free holder. Repeat for the other side.

You will need some butyl tape I imagine . If you have an old glass shop around they might have some.

Passenger side came apart very easily, just by rocking the glass back and forth.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 023.jpg

Drivers side, someone injected some super glue or something. Glass clamped to the table on top of some bubble wrap.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 026.jpg

Close your eyes....
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 028.jpg

Held pressure for almost 5 minutes and then it finally started to lift.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 030.jpg

All cleaned up ready for their new holders.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 032.jpg

First we need the lock knobs off the old ones
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 033.jpg

Punching out the small retainer pin. You don't need to fully remove it, just far enough so it clears the post hole.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 036.jpg

New base, wavy washer and the lock knob. Lock knob took a trip to the buffer and back.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 039.jpg

A bit of white grease on the shafts and then assemble. Wavy washer and then the lock knob.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 041.jpg

Channel locks to press the pin back in flush.

Glass setting tape. This 0.060" worked great on my Bee vent glass, but a bit tight on these ones. 0.050" would have been perfect, but I just used a bigger hammer  as I don't have any 0.050".
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 049.jpg

Cut a strip and lay it on top of the glass holder.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 053.jpg

Push the glass down by hand and line the rear edge up with the rear edge of the holder. Then make sure it's firmly into place and fully engaged with the hammer... the RUBBER one!
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 063.jpg

Trim off the excess setting tape with an exacto knife.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 059.jpg

Almost done.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 061.jpg

Tape each end off, glass and holder. Front end.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 066.jpg

Rear end.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 067.jpg

Fill the gap with gasket maker.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 069.jpg

Force it into the gap and smooth with your finger and then peel the tape.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 072.jpg

Ready for install tomorrow once the gasket maker has cured.

Vent glass put back into place and pivot head going back together.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 081.jpg

Pivot assembly screw LOOSELY into place.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 082.jpg

Pivot parts and the isolating rubbers.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 085.jpg

Pivot screw tightened up AFTER the glass is closed and nicely positioned in it's correct place.
1969dodgedartswingerspring2022 089.jpg

Same deal on this side, only tighten the pivot screw after the glass is locked into place and nicely parallel to it's surrounding frames. No more pitted glass holders on the Dart!

Time to tackle the transmission leaking out the shifter shaft / throttle shaft seals. Wish I'd done them when it was all sitting on the floor, but there was no sign they leaked before tear down. Gonna let my stubborn Irish side have a go at doing this without pulling the headers out of the way, or dropping the transmission.

Many think they have a leaking pan gasket, you have to look closely to see that red fluid sitting under the shift lever, held there by surface tension.

What a place to try and work. I can get one hand in and not that well.
View attachment 1715898252
Throttle shaft lever bolt loosened off via 12" of of extension from the rear.
View attachment 1715898253
Shift lever bolt accessed from the front.

Levers popped off and you know you're in the right place!

Time to play dental hygienist !

Amazing how hard it is to find the throttle shaft seals (the small one). Tried everywhere, got two off Ebay last year. The bigger shift shaft seal is available everywhere.
View attachment 1715898258
Snap clip and washer removed from throttle shaft and new seals ready to go in.
View attachment 1715898259
Out come the dental picks. Stab and try to hook the throttle shaft seal out without breaking off the pick.

Would it be possible to get a couple part numbers for these seals? I ordered one already for my 74 a904 and I received a speedo gear shaft seal instead....

Quick question, is the shift shaft seal the same for both, 727/904 transmissions?
I'm on the rock auto link shared above and can't find a specific for a 904, just one for the 727... maybe I'm missin something?
