1972 Dodge Colt

I got a lot of the short block together today.
I was trying to be real careful.

Bad day today, lots of issues, didn't get much done.
Sears had a bad day, ratchet said "I'm Done", just like that no worky.
Valve spring compressor, never seen it bend like that, did find a work around.
Looks like I need some new, better tools.

I had to fabricate a spacer for my valve spring height micrometer to center the new retainers.
That took a while.

I did get the pistons clay measured and about half the head together.
I am just going to guess on the eyebrow volume, 6 CC for both?

The valve reliefs in my KB 240's are listed at 8 cc's, so I am guessing yours are closer to 4 cc's

Jim Barbeau called me last night.
Jim owned the Colt for 30 years and was the last racer who owned it.
He wanted to check on his old car.
That meant a lot to me.
This was Bill's facebook Profile Picture.

You are getting more history of the car prior to your ownership, that's a good thing!

Going in tomorrow.
Pretty happy with what I have.
Only thing I would change today if I could would be rings.
I could not get what I wanted without waiting.
I don't have that time right now.
I am going to order them and wait for the Venolia engine, I call it V3 right now.

Painted engine and started the reinstall.
I watched a youtube video that said Bob Glidden after getting a new car made a few changes.
He enlarged every hole by the next drill size to help speed up maintenance.
My Colt needs that!
It takes forever to get everything lined up!

As many times as you had the engine in and out during the fabrication stages, you should have it down to a science by now. LMAO

Just found this thread and scanned thru a few pages, this is a really cool car. I say you put a cheap centrifugal blow-thru system on it and don't sweat all the unique engine piece that really only make small improvements.

Thanks for reading some of the story, the whole 60 pages is a big commitment to bite off.
But I wanted to show all the effort, warts and all.

I am an NA guy, that is where the challenge is to me.
I am happy to find small improvements along the way.

Short block is between the frame rails.
I spent an hour or more getting the flywheel back on.
I had chased all the threads, but I guess the new crank was machined just a touch different.
It was like 2 threads were .0001 on a tilt from square.
I had to hone the 2 holes in the flywheel till I could get all the ARP bolts started.
It all fit on last years crank, weird.
On the bellhousing there are 33 bolts including the 2 starter bolts.
And you have to start them all before you start tightening them snug.
I weighed the flywheel today because I could not remember.
29.1 Lbs, I thought that was a unique weight. I thought it was 35 Lbs.
It has been surfaced one time, so I guess it was 30 Lbs.

Transmission, driveshaft back in.
New water pump and front mount plate back in also.
Going to get the head on tomorrow and install the new reground lifters.
First time I have used a copper head gasket.
I spent some time on the phone with Total Seal rings in Phoenix.
I am going to send one of the Venolias out there for a custom ring package.
Tech guy said he could half ring friction.
V3 planning.

Lifters in, copper headgasket with ARP studs.
Intake and exhaust system installed.
New pump, front plate, new damper marked for TDC and 40 BTDC.
Pushrods came today from Smiths Brothers.
They make good stuff.
Everything takes forever.
Record rain in the DFW area, I need to work on my boat.

Nice progress, Stan! Did you put anything on the head gasket or put it on dry?

Two or three heavy coats of Copper Coat.
Slapped it on after a thinner wipe and the pulled the studs down.
Going to re-torque after the break in run.

That's what I always use on any type of metal gasket.

Stan, you didn't expect him to reveal ALL of his secrets at one time did ja? LMAO
