1972 Duster Build with my Daughter

-
I have a 69-76 classic pad on my 67. It fits nice but tight. Best to install to dash frame when frame is out of the car. I wait for the discount codes from em to show up in my inbox then buy what i need.

Yup, I wait for the 30% or 35% off cycle then load up the cart!

Only thing with classic that sucks is their deals always say "up to X%" so even if it says 25% off its up to 25%. They had some 69 cuda diecast grille surrounds. Had that up to 25% off sale. They only dropped the price on em by 15%

When year one says 25% or 30% they mean it. I just bought some 30% off parts on fathers day from them. 30% was 30%

Poor daughter got 7 teeth pulled at 7am this morning and I got 2 caps done at 9 so very little was done. I did get the tools I need for the metal work and gas for my MIG welder. I am hoping welding with shielding gas vs shielding wire makes it as huge a difference as everyone says it does. I don't want to repeat the frustration I had on the Coronet. I did get the Dash out of the Dart this evening. Kaelyn has gotten to hate the Dart so she is OK with me working on that without her. Booster tomorrow and I can then get the inner fender out.

The guts of the dash and AC box look really good outside of the rats nest. I am sure I am going to modify the firewall in the Duster to accept the '73 AC box.

It is fascinating to see the difference between the "cheap" A-Body Duster and the "fancier" B-Body Coronet. They are the same but different. The Duster is MUCH easier to work on but it is also a MUCH simpler design.

Wow 7 teeth. Did she have some impacted wisdom teeth.? That can be a real *****. Mine gave me what felt like constant ear infections, but it was just teeth pushing on nerves.

Yes the As are a lot simpler and easier than the Bs

Yes, there was a cyst under one of them and infected. There was always a chance since before she got her braces. Her mouth was too small and too crowded. The cyst was the tipping point to just pull them all while she was out.

Yep, pull em all at one time, and get it over with, take some serious pain killers, and head on doen the road

I had 8 teeth extracted before braces. Back then that was done in the hospital. Spent three days in the hospital and lost 20 pounds. I was a 80 pound weakling when I walked out.
When I got home helped my dad change a water pump on a neighbors 250 straight 6 Chevy. To this day the smell of antifreeze brings back a painful memory of that ordeal.
I sympathize with the duster daughter.

That is why you could not stand that small weeping of your radiator!

A 73 dart dash and the 72 duster dash are very similar, same basic layout but there are some big differences.

Look at the heater controls. I personally like the 67-72 style of heater controllers because they are easier to find if a replacement is needed.

The 73 - 76 tend to get brittle and the plastic likes to crumble, especially when living in a very dry climate. When a replacement is needed, the non A/C controllers are quite hard to find. Finding one that isn't brittle is a challenge. I am still looking for one for my 75 duster.

These days with 3D printing that should not be quite as bad of the problem. I drew up a few small parts and had them 3D printed for the Coronet.

I am scratching my head. I got the AC box out tonight and had a good look at what the firewall differences are. It will take a fairly good chunk of the Dart firewall around the core exit points and blower motor as well as an area below the blower motor where the indentation is extended for the '73 box. It will easily be a weekends worth of work. I really like the idea of the factory items for the AC but....

Convince me one way or the other to keep the '73 OEM AC system or get a Classic Air system.......

Well those little Japanese compressors take much less underhood room and hp.

I don't remember if classic or vintage air uses blend door motors, but my preference would be the one that uses the simple cable operate door.

From what I understand they don't have "blend", it is binary, on/off. Though my OEM Coronet is basically binary too for various reasons.

I just hate the look of all the hoses gathering and poking through the blower area.
One of the reasons i kinda really dont want to add A/C. Maybe you can sheetmetal over the blower hole, punch 4 neatly done grommeted holes for the A/C and heat. Make it look somewhat stock. Heck where you live, you probably dont need the heat part. Just the A/C

Need it once in a while. It gets into the single digits rarely, 10's occasionally and 20's often for the 6 weeks of winter at the altitude we live at.

  • Please check out my thread in mopar general about mr Gs chromed plastic. They are clearing out their restored plastic inventory. They may have what you need in Oem restored mopar interior parts.

Kaelyn is not doing so good with the dental work. She was sick all weekend so I went to a car show Saturday but I worked on the Dart today.... I did some work on the Duster but when Kaelyn came out to see what I was doing I got "the look" so I stopped working on the Duster without her....

I got the bumper mount area of the frame cut out on the Duster and the straight one mocked in from the Dart, just need a little grinding for a perfect fit. I did get gas for my MIG Friday so I can't wait to try to weld it..
