I'll be brief. Recently a wiper motor went from working fine to not parking. Just keeps running when key is switched on. Grounds and park switch are fine, double checked and rechecked. Question is do the islands (could be a cause according to the FSM) look worn enough to cause an issue, or should I look elsewhere? Thanks for looking Fabo!

Hmmmm. Don't have any 3 speed wiper motor GURU's here? I find that hard to believe, lol.
Any idea who I could ask? I really want to learn about these things. I kinda get the jist of how park works, but it's hard to watch it happen with the switch cover on. lol

Thanks for the links. Let's just assume for the sake of argument my grounds and switches (park and dash) are good. What's next?
My point is, I'm trying to learn something here. Sure, check the grounds. Maybe test the switch. Maybe just throw a new one in. That's what most would do. The Factory Service Manual says the islands could be worn or broken? I'm trying to understand what that means. I actually have NOS replacement gears and latches, but I don't just want to throw un-necessary parts at it. Yet, lol.

When you go to test, take wiper arms off. Only replace when action seems correct.

Park contacts open at park position. In run, park is over ridden by wiper switch. When wiper switch off, park drives motor to park and kills power. If park contacts are corroded, eroded, or bent, park won't happen.

Yep, wiper arms are off. And yes, again, lets say the park switch and dash switch is fine. My question is about the islands. Do they look good enough to do the job? Thanks for the reply!!!!

Do islands function to open and close contacts? Figure out a way to test continuity or measure contact voltage.

Verify motor body has ground with meter.

Momentarily jumper park contact as test, to see if motor runs.

I asked first, lol.

Done. See post #1. Park switch is good.

Yep. I've done the stand alone test. Same scenario. Motor runs. Won't park.

Which is why I'm asking about the islands and their function and if mine look good.

Thanks for the reply!!! I'm gonna know about 3 speed wiper motor functions before this is over.
I'm just like that. I've got a spare to play with on the bench.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, @mopardude62, but the wiper motor I wrote the how to article on was a 2 speed, and they are quite different on the inside. I had never done one before, but I took it apart real slow, took lots of pictures and it worked when reassembled. That being said, I guess that if @moparmandan wanted to send his to me, I could try my hand at taking it apart, trying to fix it, greasing it, reassembling and painting it, I'd take a shot at it. If I figured it out, I'd be able to do 2 and 3 speed ones. That's how I roll. That's how I rebuilt the 4 speed in my car. Take it apart SLOWLY and take lots of pictures. Worst case scenario would be that I would send it back looking a lot better but still not working.

Thanks for the offer, but you and I are alike in that way. I will figure this thing out and then I will know how to do it.

This ain't work. I enjoy this part of the hobby. I've already repaired a 3 speed but I just replaced the gear and latch
mechanism. Which is what will probably happen with this one. I'm just trying to learn more and not be just a parts swapper...........

I appreciate the replies!!!!

I TOTALLY agree. I love taking things apart to try and fix them.:thumbsup:

I've learned a lot the last couple days. How the latch, cams, islands and rocker arm all work together in forward then reverse to park is really cool.

In forward (dash switch on L,M,H) the islands and outer cam guide the rocker arm around the latch.

In reverse (dash switch off) the outer cam and longer island guides the rocker arm down into the latch which rotates the switch cam out to contact and close the park switch, stopping the motor.

I think. LOL

When I know more, I'll pass it on with pics and such.

Most often, "open contacts stop motor".
Does it? Probably. It was an hour in between testing in the shop and coming inside to write this. I could have forgotten my name in
that amount of time. LOL
