So, with the recent intrest and discussion about 318 builds, I'm thinking I will do one when we are done with the smallblock cylinder head shootout. I have 2 possible ways to go, option #1 would be stock stroke, ported speedmasters, solid flat tappet, or option #2 would be a 4" stroke 390 cube version, ported speedmasters and probably a hyd roller. These options are basically because I have parts allready on the shelf. Let me know which version you guys would rather see.

Just myself, I would like to see a 318 stock stroke build, would you be giving a spec list on the crank and rods used, well figuring you will, and what compression do you think the build would be projected at ?

Either version I'll be listing all the parts used, as well as pictures and descriptions of the machine work, assembly and testing.

Either. Best bang for the buck might be a 318 because there are so many here. There have been very few 390s built. Also, few 415's but many 408's probably because the 360's are easier to come by than the 340's.

I have a couple of 318's, I'm interested what a stock bottom end with your add-ons would do. As others have said, there are a crap-ton of stock 318's around, it would be very cool to see what one of these does when you get done with it.

I mean who wouldn’t want to see both? Stock bottom end with ported speed masters and a decent cam, then toss the rotating assembly in it and run it again. The only other thing I’d suggest is to have the stroker sold prior to beginning to offset some of the dyno/work time.

As much as I'd be interested to see what a 390 would do, I gotta throw my vote to the stock stroke 318. It would have a lot more relevance to 99% of the guys bolting one together.
Ever consider a 273 furthehelluvit? I'd love to see one on the dyno wound up good and tight...

Cool idea, but once its built, I'll be ready to sell it, not tear back down.

The piston cost for a 273 kills that idea. Its either the egge cast ones with a terrible ring package or custom. And I would have to sell the engine when I was done, and I believe a high strung expensive 273 would likely never sell

LOL I know a guy with an oil pan that will FIT that beeotch if you want it lol.

My vote is for option 1, mostly because I have a similar build just sitting on a stand since my daughter was born and you would likely have the motor built and on the dyno before mine even makes it into the car. ( although my home port job would be much milder )
Interested to see the results

I’m for the stock stroke model .
The reason being I’m gonna build a somewhat stock engine,,,,but with a flare for yesterday,,,slightly .

I’ve always wondered what a decent power level could be achieved with “ normal “,,,,priced improvements.
I’m using a magnum because I have it .
I’m bumping compression up to 11 to 1,,,,,using a little bigger roller cam ( .484 with the magnum rockers ) .
Gasket matched factory heads that have 2.02-1.625 valves,,,and an aluminum 4 barrel intake.
The magnum heads already have the exhaust valve size ,,,I just need to increase the intake a little .

I’m planning on using a nice double pumper carb as well .
My feelings are I wanted to try to emulate an old high performance small block build,,,,,but with a Mopar feeling .
The old 340 was great,,,but it still came up a little short on compression ,,and cam lift .
I always thought Mopar should have had an engine that was equivalent to the Chevy .

Edit added :
Oh yeah,,,I forgot to mention that I’m using 340 HP manifolds .
That should still keep it in the same vein as the old factory engines,,,those manifolds flowed pretty well as they were .

I vote for stock stroke, A 390 is just a slightly under bore 408, other than a little more valve shrouding and given up a few cubes pretty much the same thing as a 408.

But either way, I appreciate you sharing this build with us.

Yeah not for the true cost of custom pistons. No one wants to spend 2000 on pistons.

I’d say push it up in the 11 or 12-1 and give it a healthy cam for 4 speed car with 3.73’s, Doug’s headers, manual brakes for a goal HP of 400-425 range.

I vote stock stroke 318. A lot of questions about 318's and their capabilities. It would be nice to see what some one who knows what they're doing, do one right. Less expensive for the little guys like me.

I love 273's but the rpm level with ported Speedmaster heads would be added valve train cost and pretty much put one in a race engine category. Custom Pistons are not that much more expensive, I've paid less than $800 and you get exactly what you want. Custom pistons are not needed on a 273, stock 2 barrel pistons are "0" deck and yield a little over 9:1 compression with uncut 64-67 heads.
