does anyone know the the difference between the 318 industrial engine and
the 318 that came in cars and light trucks? these are not the poly motors and thay came in bigger like 2ton trucks, motor homes and farm equipment.
i thought maybe they might have thicker castings, or steel cranks or some thing. the heads are different, and use a different type of plug but not sure on the rest of it. i need to rebuild an engine for my scamp and have one of each, one is out of a 72 motorhome the other is out of 72 satellite wagon.
any info would be appeciated

the 360 i used out of a 74 motor home did have diff. heads and a stock double row timing chain. crank was cast.had to replace timing cover all pulleys and brackets and the oil pan.

i would guess the mtorhome engine would use a diff oil pan,
and may {possibly, not guaranteed}
be lower compression, and could even have 3 rings instead of 2.

The camshaft duration might be different too.

I live in Brighton Colorodo, just north of Denver.
the piston are dished on motor home engine so it does have lower compression.
but i'll be replacing them with flattops, would like to have about 9.5 to 1or 10to1 compression. I have ported 360 heads for it already. just wont the buttom to be as strong as possible.

Motor homes will have full floated wrist pins like the 340 did. They will also probably have a steel crank rather than cast one. Some times the had different hollow stem valves. Also a lower compression.

In most cases it will have very little parts to use.The block and crank and rods should be kept.The cam is for idle to 2500RPM and the heads are normally very small ports,low end torque only.The crank could have a none drilled mounting face,and a different bolt pattern as well for the applacation.No one should pay any big money for these,as the parts you intend to use are few.You are doing them a favout to take it of there hands and reuse it,Mrmopartech

Forged cranks have wide flash marks (1/2 to 3/4), where cast cranks have narrow flash marks (1/8 ). Sorry I don't have a picture of the flash marks on a crank, maybe some one else has.
Below I have listed crank casting no.s below. You will notice there is not a Forged crank 318 listed. I guess because they were rare. If you have a casting no. on that crack maybe you could post it. Or if any one has any corrections let me know. I think I got these fom an old direct connection manual. :thumblef:
