Das more like it! Although it's a TRW replacement, it's still about the same as the 68-71 piston.

That's always been one of my dream builds. To build up a blueprinted 71 340 dead stock but with the 68 4 speed cam with everything machined to perfect spec and stick it in something light.

Me and you both. Because as we all know, the factory engines were lacking in machine work which made the actual compression ratios less than advertised. I'd love to see what one would do in an early A body.
 
5.9 magnum is just a superior piece to work with in my opinion. Roller block, lighter rotating assembly, better ring placement, better compression, very easy to get and cheap at that, and in a mild build the magnum heads are great, and the LA heads can be used if so desired.
 
When I was stocking up 360’s were 50.00-75.00 for a block and crank. That all I wanted. Since I’m drag race only I’m not going to a car show, puffing out my chest, and saying it’s got a 340. Nobody is going to climb under YOUR car anyway so I would just lie if I wanted to. On the track I gain 20 cubic inches and money in my pocket to buy good rockers, good rods, or better heads. That’s a win win in my life. See you at the finish line.

It's all a moot point anyhow since the OP pretty much abandoned his own thread without clarifying his question or purpose.
Just stirrin' the pot, sitting back and laughing.
 
I like the 340. But more when used in a stroker application.
It yields more cubes, because of bigger bore, Not a bad thing.
In the whole scheme of things, a good 340 block might be 800-1000 bucks. A good 360 block, couple hundred.
The 500-700 dollar difference in the whole totality of the build is such it becomes a very minor factor. In other words say 7500 to do a 340 stroker instead of 7000 to do a 360…. For the difference, give me the 340…each to his own….
 
I'm posting this over to the Chevy forums, I'd like to hear what they have to say.
Should make the rest of winter exciting.
 
In the Old Days (No one under 60 wants to hear this) there was a saying,,
"There is no substitute for cubic inches":poke: Of course that was wayyy before power adders.


It’s easy to out run bigger cubic inch engines if you know anything about building the right combo. Way to many 10 second big blocks out there.
 
Sometimes a picture can say a thousand words. Ancient Mopar Theorists says YES indeed the 340 was the best performance engine out of any stock small blocks Chrysler made. When you start to upgrade any stock small block it becomes mute, then the performance only true restrains are time, talent and money.

10 years ago I'd say 340..but all these clowns that have them now want upwards of $1000.00 just for a block w/main caps:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:..so I'd go 360 in stroked form NO ONE will know if its a 340 or 360..unless they climb under too see:):):)

Yep, 340's have become the restoration or class race motor. I have no need to hide any motor I'm running. I'll gladly say 273 or 440, which ever it is.
 
I suggest storing as many 318 blocks you can under the bench.:poke:
The 390 stroker may be all that's left in the LA platform in the future.
 
i said i prefer a 340, that's all.
... if i said my 340 is more powerful or better than your 360 it would be chest puffing.
I understand... my point was just because someone wants to build a fast 360 doesn't mean they want to puff their chest...
 
if that's all to be had you'd be running a stroked 273. :lol:


Truth is I like stock stroke 360’s. I have a 9 second one on and engine stand and a balanced assembly for another one. Ohhh don’t get me wrong I like 340’d too but I sold all of those except technically my 422 I’d based off a 340-318 sized crank. (Main bearing size).
 
..and no body has decided what better means...better resale, more valuable, more desirable ???
Don't forget a 360 is much heavier with 20 more cubes!
 
They put 340's into muscle cars, and 360's into Camper Vans......Need I say more?:lol:
