340

-
Iv read a couple of accounts where ppl claim to have bores a 318 to a 340. There was a guy on fb swore that he had one even read it on another forum. I'm a little hesitant to believe it. But I'm not going to call anyone a liar. One guy said he tried it on several different blocks at least a dozen and only found one that made it and didnt crack and it was a 67 model block he claimed that only pre 68 blocks should even be considered and even then it was a long shot. But he claimed that he did it!

If you make the road trip you will have to stop by and chat for a while you will drive right by me on the way to nc!

If the guy is named Bill, he aint lying.

You mean because of the difficulty of finding a good used one.
Some guys have bored 318s out to 340 size
You can bore a 360 out to 340 size.
If you really want a 340 put up a want-ad. If you can't find one Pm me; I have several you can chose from.
What Did I say wrong?
I said "Some guys have bored 318s out to 340 size",
Bite me.....

Maybe I Shouldda said some guys say they have bored 318s out to 340 size. Or
Maybe I shouldda said I know a guy who has a very strong Demon, in my neighborhood, with what He SAID was a 318 bored out to 4.04.
IDK, you guys are a tough crowd.
The point is the same, If you gotta have a 340 they are only rare if you don't go look for one. Maybe there are not many guys around like me with a stash of them, but I bet there are plenty out there under benches waiting for the right offer. Open your wallet and see what happens.
As for me, I don't need beer money, I need mortgage payments.
Does that make me an opportunist? Everyone who has something to sell is....... so yes.

I dont think you said anything wrong. I have seen the old 318 overbore debate several times on fb. I don't think anyone was throwing shade your way ole bud!

I just say don’t blindly go into a 318 thinking it is OK to go .130 on a over bore.

I think its probably one of those things where someone did it to do it and yea it worked but let's be real does the thing ever get run? I'm sure it's been done before but like rr43 said it probably will blow up. Not a good idea.

Well, that’s what sonic checking is for.
If the block can handle it.....

Hopefully AJ is in the shed trying to find me a 340 block

A good 318 block is casting nr 2536030 with four engine mounting ears om both sides . Up till 1975. I have Sonic tested two sofar and vill bore them to 4.000. then use chevy 327 Rods and pistons .Longer Rods and lighter vristpins. I have 6 more of those blocks to test. I'll comback about vall thickness later. Must work now.

It makes 332.75 c.u.i.

I picked up a standard bore 340 block that needs one sleeve last summer for $200.

FWIW, I have had 340 blocks tank @ .020.

Why isn't someone reproducing 340 blocks ? It's just stupid not to do it . Help me with this please .

Since you bring up how stupid it is to not make new 340blocks,just go make some since its so simple.

How about an aluminum 340 block that doesn't cost a bajillion dollars?

Really, how hard could it be to make a new block? I think 1957 was the first year for the poly block, each later version had just a few changes from the first. The cadcam, 3D printers and computers we have today are a 1000 times better than 1957 technology. Didn't have to much problem back then, or where those guys smarter? Money is a non issue IMO, Chevy guys don't seem to have any problems finding the factories, foundries and the like. All we get are excuses.

Computers and cad cam don't provide any knowledge of HOW to cast things, and do not cast ANYTHING. So that is not any big help... And you need a foundary..... it makes no sense to build one just for this small market size and so will likely contract it out.

Know how much engineers make these days? So, yes, money IS indeed an issue; anyone who knows product development knows this. (I worked in engineering development for 15 years so kinda know what it takes...my biggest project estimate was $38M.) The only way to lower those costs are to have the skills yourself and be willing to invest your own time for free, but that is speculative, and indeed costs your time when you could be doing other work that pays the bills. And you can't do that when it comes time to do pilot casting runs contracted with a foundry.... they won't do speculative work unless there is a big potential upside for them. So the idea that cost is not a factor is nonsensical.

So think of the costs and look at the market size and the potential return, and putting $$ into the MUCH larger Chevy and large Ford markets makes much more sense. Mopar stuff costs more for those exact reasons: to make a return on the small market requires higher prices.

So why are you not starting up production of new blocks? I dont want to hear any excuses, just do it.
