I just put together my 5.9L Magnum with new heads and used the stock rocker arms with stock springs. I torqued the rocker arm bolts down to 21ft-lbs or as close as i could on my torque wrench. My issue or issues is that when the engine heats up and i shut if off, you hear pinging noises.... Now i've allowed this thing to heat up and cool down a few times to let everything settle and i still get the ping/pop sounds when i shut it off. Also i can hear the rockers clicking after if warms up and over idle rpm around 1500rpm +.

Is the ping/pop noises from loose or even over tightened rocker arms? wrong grade of oil (Running 10w-30)?

Any ideas on what to try or do?

It's not from your concerns but from something else.
Did you install new headers and/or exhaust pipes? That would do it.

Did you install pushrods that oil through them or old la pushrods that are solid that oil heads then rocker shaft?

Does it have good oil pressure?
Did you get the rocker arm pivots or whatever those things are called installed with the proper orientation on the V shaped grooves? Stock cam or performance?

Did u change the cam ? Regrind? Where heads milled? Thick head gasket? I'd check lifter preload. If can is regrind they take it off the base circle and require longer push rods.

This is probably very close. You are not getting oil to the top because of the wrong lifters or pushrods or ?????? It clicks and pops when you shut it off because things are getting hot and seized and "snapping" back into place after running. I would bet money that some of the valve guides or valve stems are screwed at this point. Don't run it any longer. Pull a valve cover and inspect for oil--I bet you don't have any up top. J.Rob

Well its all stock pieces, the push rods are hollow and cleaned out. I've got a bunch of oil in the top end. Everything is stock except for the new "stock" roller lifters with the oil hole facing up when installed. The head gasket is perma torque fel-pro. I just thought i may have over tightened them.

I cup up stock valve covers so i can see the valve train while the engines running. I'll get a visual and make sure its all good. I think if the oil is getting to them all and that seems alright. My plan is to loose all the rocker arm bolts and snug them till i cant rotate the push rod and do either a 1/4 or maybe 1/2 turn of the wrench for snugging them. Hopefully that some 15-40 diesel oil with ZDDP additive will help out in the oil department.

btw oil pressure sits around 65/70 then bleeds off to 50 and once fully hot at idle its at 15/20 psi

ok so theyre all torqued down to 21ft-lbs. Oil though all push rods and filled the rocker arms. Are those bolts only torqued to 21ftlbs or as i've read in some threads 30ft-lbs.

The ping noise seems to be coming from the fricken lifters... i wonder if the oil isnt thick enough...

adjusted the arm bolts a bit over 21ft lbs and no ticking from them now, put in 15-40 oil but still get a bit of ping from the lifters. going for a drive to check it out.

3.9 in my '99 Dakota has the noisiest valve train, of any vehicle, I've ever owned. I just assumed they all did that.

well i went for a good drive in it and they quieted down a bit but it sounds like atleast one is clapping away. I'm going to have to check them out again and triple check the torque on them. If not i'm going to be pissed if the new lifters are ****. Every magnum i've had is pretty quiet and very minimal noise from the valve train unless you over rev them and float the valves.

what cam is in the motor?

Stock factory cam. I didnt have time to switch it out and find valve springs. Had 5 days after work to pull motor, build the magnum and get it running for a Chrysler show on the weekend.

Havent gotten time to play around with it any more but hopefully this weekend i can get some time on it.

This is just a thought that I figured I would throw in since its easy to do. Are you running a Fram oil filter? When I worked at a chrysler dealership along time ago we would have magnums come in with noisy valve trains. Sometimes swapping out the fram oil filter with a different brand would fix it. Dont know why, but it happened a few times.

you need to do this with the cam on its base circle for each valve.

Just going to throw this out there because I have seen it before: When you installed the new lifters, you remembered to install the "dog bones" and make sure the spider retaining plate was on top of the "dog bones"? I have seen people try put the dog bones through the loops on the end and get all kinds of interesting noises.

Also the "dog bones" have a top and bottom side. Putting them in upside down can make some funny noises as well.
