65 Barracuda 187 code!!!

Yup. I plan on doing that today and seeing what I have. This is the first time taking a compression test. What should it be at? What's considered good and bad?

Well after talking to quite a few people and looking into some of the issues this could be, I've come to the conclusion that the points distributor isn't giving enough spark to do the job. Luckily, I have the control box and electronic distributor to change it over. I guess i'm doing this a little early, but i planned on doing this later. Mind as well get 'er done now! I'm thinking of upgrading to a different coil as well. Maybe a MSD Blaster coil. This bone stock 65 coil ain't cutting it lol... :glasses7:

So I did a huge amount of tests on the motor today. The only thing I can think of is that it has a crack on the bottom side of the intake. This would explain why I can't adjust the air mixture screw on my carburetor and why the exhaust smells and looks bad. I'm gonna try a new intake manifold and see what happens

Let us know, this sounds like it could be the culprit.

too convert a 1969 and earlier mopar over to electronic ignition,,,you will also need the blue voltage regulator,,,not available thru any auto parts store,,,only thru any one selling mopar performance parts,,,or convert over to the 1970 and up altenator,,,and voltage regulator,,,only need to add one wire to do the conversion,,

So i bought an intake today off of 63Belvedere. Thanks buddy im really hoping this solves my problem!:profilel: Its an Edelbrock Performer. I figured i didnt need anything too crazy because everything in this motor is stock. Just something that can house my holley and give me a little more torque.

Heres where the issues start. After i pulled about 50 sheetmetal screws out of the carpet, this is what i found...

Please shoot me in the face lol. Its not super bad and i know how to fi it, but i hate it when people hide things from you and you find them out later. Its always a bad surprise too. Its never like a wad of $100 bills.

So heres a couple other things i was wondering if some people could help me figure out. This plug is on the back of the transmission and if i remember correctly on other mopars, it should have 3 prongs sticking out of the back. What does this do?

Net question is this. The electronics on the new shifter are there for a shift indicator light. You can see what its supposed to light up, and you can see the electronics. What bulb do i get and does anyone know how to wire this up right? I can live without it for the time being, and its not like the carpet is going back in for a while so i can always go back to it. My brain is a sponge lets fill it! :newb::happy1:

Neutral safety switch. It looks like 2 of the prongs are broken off. All you need is to get that NSS working in the trans, and wire the light for the selector. That other switch on the shifter is for NSS, but you won't need to wire it if the one in the trans is working.

It took me a minute to get the car to even show a sign of life. Finally figured out which wire combination it was lol. But now it wont actually drive. The shifter is stiff which is good and you can feel that its going into gears, but the car wont drive. I also dont want to put too much stress on the motor if its not running right. Hopefully fiixing that this weekend

Wow, what an ornery little cuda you got there! That fuel cell strapping looks a little shaky to me also, signs of the quality of work the PO was capable of!! I think its in good hands now, and you will be turning the corner on a lot of areas in the right direction! Ill jump in when I can be of help!! Aftermarket shifters and stuff are not my best subject!! Geof

Thanks buddy! Oh ya this guy was a piece of work.... You like that fuel cell hiuh?? Thats nothing. He made his own slapper bars it looks like. And the welds in the rear look NAAAAASTY man. Not to mention all the rattle can he did to the interior. Im gonna rip out the interior completely and spot weld all the holes he riveted and screwed. :banghead: Its cool i have plans to do that the correct way. Same with the giant hole in the tranny tunnel..... I went back and tried to shift it around again and it actually worked! the car stayed running enough to feel it go into drive, reverse, neutral, and park! very happy and proud. My first one ever.

Can anyone tell me what that sensor looking thing is on the back of the transmission? just curious.

Here's the new shifter installed. I didnt want to put the fancy ball on top or the console because its still under construction.

first you have to figure out what year the trans is,,,that may be why 2 terminals are broken off the switch,,on the early,,,and i think 1966 and earlier or 65 and earlier.,,the trans only used a single connection switch,,that was for netural saftey,,,the reverse light switch was on the shifter in the console,,,, later trans used 3 prong switch,,, back up lights and netrual saftey all in one,,,since u have a netrual swtich on the shifter,,just wire that up,,,but you wont have reverse lights i dont think,,you can get a switch like the one on the shifter and find way to mount it so it connects when in reverse,,,cant be to hard

Where do i find out what year this transmission is? And no i dont have reverse lights haha. Whats interesting is i hear a slight buzz coming from the actual shifter when going into reverse. Its so faint i might be mistaking it for an electrical noise though and its only when going into reverse. Could this also have something to do with reverse lights? Maybe sending a signal to the lights but nothing is hooked up so it just buzzes?

On your shifter one switch is for reverse lights and the other is for neutral. I have run many B&M shifters and liked them. My fav was the mega shifter.

He mega shifter is cool! I had a pro ratchet it my dart sport that was nice. But I like the idea of being able to just push up or down for a gear
