66 Dart GT HT Whatsitgonnabe?

There's an exhaust leak btw the manifold and head at the two middle cylinders on the driver's side. I've tightened the bolts about as hard as I dare and the gasket is brand new. I wonder if I need to have someone check the surfaces for squareness.
.

They could be warped a bit - I'd have a machinist plane them true after you pull the engine to refurbish the engine compartment.

I hope I won't need to use them at all. I want something that breathes a little better.

I'm not sure about the gasket, Ray, I didn't buy it myself. I think I might have the box still. Lemme check.

Was it just thin metal or kind of thick with a aluminum coating?

I would loosen them up and start tightening from the middle out.

Great idea!

Here's a pic of the material.

That's what I was going to suggest to go to. Try what I said in the last post, if it does not work it will not cost you anything. If you ever need parts from here let me know. Has to be cheaper than there even with the shipping.

Would it be better to tighten them when they are a little warm or as cold as possible?

Well, that didn't do it, I'm afraid. Really couldn't tell the difference. I guess I'll take them off and check how straight they are.

Not really sure Why I should be running my engine much more right now. I do need to actually fill the transmission up and I want to verify that the water pump is ok. This means I'll need to run it long enough to get up to proper working temperature. Which means I'll need to get all the exhaust leaks out.

By the way, I hope my neighbors don't mind a little V8 song in the evenings. :D

It's below freezing outside. It really doesn't smoke that much. :D

Here's a slightly messy video of how it runs when it's a little warm.

Almost soiled myself near the end when my sweater was sucked into the carb. :D:D:D

Well, I think it's pretty conclusive. The manifold isn't off by much, maybe 0.3 mm (what is that, 1/64"?) but it's obviously enough. Need to get that sorted, then.

Yeah get it milled down straight, might want to check the other side now.

Yeah, I'll have them both done. No leaks on the passenger side but it's so easy to dismount so I might as well.

Probably the right thing to do, they can probably sand blast them also at the same time for a few dollars more.

Well, why take the easy road? :D

I rigged a horizontal grinder in my basement in stead of finding a machine shop. Worked pretty well but I assumed the bench was flat which it wasn't. It was pretty good but in one area it was tightened down to a support beam underneath.

So after the first run I ended up pretty much where I started, the middle portion about 1 mm off. Turned things around a little and re-did the #7 and boom! On the money!

Mounted it to the car and started her up. A LOT worse than before! :D I think I took so much off that the bend on the manifold that goes around the steering column interferes with the block or the cylinder head. I'll look into it tomorrow.

I did get a taste of what the engine would sound like with open headers, though. Not too shabby. :D

I guess the head could be warped a little bit on the face where the manifold bolts to the head. I had the machine shop check gasket area where the manifolds bolt to the head on a slant head and it was not flat! A pass or two with the mill took care of that!

I haven't had time to find out why it's leaking even worse but I have a feeling it's interference btw block and manifold.

They say that "necessity is the mother of invention" but you had to have wondered whether or not that was going to be the last sight you were ever going to see before you started it up. LOL! I'm constantly re-purposing things to get stuff done.

Never forget - Duct tape is your friend.

Yes, I was a wee bit concerned that I would be coming upstairs a few fingers short. I've actually modified that mother of invention saying a little. My view is that laziness is the mother of invention. Necessity is probably an in-law of some sort.

As for duct tape, I've always found ty-raps to be man's best friend.

Could be the milling machine you used (looks like something I would do) Try a honing stone on it with a straight edge if it is only 1 MM. Cant find a machine shop to do it?

I use flex seal myself.

The manifold is very straight now. In the end I took off about 1/10 of an inch on the #7 exhaust port though, and I think that was a little bit too much.

I looked for a while but figured I could try this. A combination of laziness, curiosity and reluctance to reach out to people.
