Hi Ulf!

I think I have all the vacuum ports plugged but it could be leaking somewhere, of course.

I just got it running a little better, after a lot of cranking and short runs, it looks like the fuel pump has started to work ok. And I can see the little squirts from accelerator pump. I had to stop after a little while because oil was leaking from the passenger side valve cover and running over the exhaust manifold creating a lot of smoke. Tightened it and the problem went away.

Then, after another minute of running, I started getting some spray on me. Turns out the radiator was seeping through the evac hose on the filler neck onto the fan.

I don't know if I overfilled, it was maybe 1/2" over the radiator core in cold condition.

That made me think there is mabye air trapped somewhere in the engine. How would I know and how do I get it out? And how do I confirm that the water pump is working? The bypass hose was warm but not really hot and the upper hose to the radiator was room temp.

Turns out the radiator is leaking too. :banghead: Seeping halfway down the radiator. Bollocks. Was really hoping I wouldn't need to replace it.

Anders! Have you checked the vacuum hoses to the carb? Also check if the plug wires are connected well to the spark plugs.

But the first start is magnific. Good luck with it. I will search the yoke for you this afternoon. I'll keep you posted.

I checked the spark plug connectors, felt ok.

It actually almost idled on the last run but not quite.

If you could find a yoke, I would be really happy. :thumblef:

Just run it until the thermostat opens to get the air out. I usually run the first run with the cap off to vent the air out.

Ok, I'll take the cap off then.

Maybe I could try one of those radiator stop leak fluids first?

I use the powdered silver one. It adheres when the coolant is warm. I would put a pan under it right now and get it running if it just seeping to see if there are more issues. After the air is out and the coolant is moving put the cap on and let it build pressure, there might be more rad issues that it will not work for. It is designed for pinhole leaks.

I added a little water and some tranny fluid. Went through the gears and it all dissapeared into the inner workings. Repeated and it still needs more. Still haven't added the full 8 liters that are supposed to go in there so I'll keep pouring. No leaks that I can see either.

Added a little more advance on the timing and got her to idle! Actually got my timing light to work (sort of) and managed to get 10* initial and 30* total advance. Now it actually idles once it's warmed up. Found the idle adjustment screw on the carb, too. Made it a little easier. :D

My exhaust evac rig was shredded pretty quick. I guess the flow is a little too high. That meant the atmosphere in the garage got pretty nasty pretty soon.

Still. A good day. :)

See! The tranny seems endless to fill sometimes, the water flowing?

Not sure about the water flow to be honest. It could be I had to stop before the thermostat opened. At least it wasn't boiling yet.

No more tonight, I'm afraid. My wife is working the evening shift so I'm alone with the kids. Plus the garage is right below our living room where the TV is so I think my 10-yo will hate me if I first ruin his TV watching and then suffocate him :D

I wonder How I should go about repairing my exhaust evac ducting. Maybe I'm going to have to get solid ducts. Or maybe I should just get a few extra meters of 2,5" exhaust tubing and some bends. :D:D:D

Just get about 2' of metal ducting foe each side and attach it to the flexible stuff. The way you have it clamped on you are melting it. The exhaust should just flow out once it is started. Or can you move the car outside yet?

Thanks, swedefish!

The flexible air duct I'm using isn't melting - it's aluminum - it seems too weak to withstand the pressure puffs, at least from acceleration.

And no, I can't move it outside. No drive shaft and no front end. :D

Used a UCA bushing and a few yards of electrical tape to fit my PCV valve. Only had air hose in the correct size but it'll do for now. Started her up again but had to bail after a couple of minutes. My eyes were stinging so bad from the exhaust and the oil burning off the exhaust manifold.

Looks like a pool of ATF under the transmission but I couldn't see any hanging drops so it could be engine oil. Level and color still ok in the engine, though. No water in it and nice and clear.

Need to fix exhaust evac...

I have an exhaust leak on the drivers side somewhere, it looks like the manifold side of the gasket. Not sure what to do about that. I've tightened the bolts pretty hard.

It could be the manifold/tube joint, I'm too scared to crawl under the car to check while it's running just yet ... A little scared it'll catch fire with me under it. An open fuel can, some leaked ATF and a carb fire is not a pretty picture ...

I turned the idle mixture screws trying to get her started the other day. Any tips on how to adjust them?

Got a yoke in yet?

Great afb site

Sorry but that is funny! Been there done stupid stuff myself.

I mean, that is one big hole. Why did I not see it? I've been there installing cooling lines, dismounting torsion bars, rigging exhaust and fiddeling with shift linkage.

Unbelievable ... :banghead:

I usually have a car friend look my stuff over when it is a big project and he always finds stuff like that. It cost me a beer each find so he usually leaves wasted (but he lives next door!) LMAO

Ha ha! I need a neighbor like that!

Well, Don, I know what goes there but I don't think I have one. I can't remember seeing anything in that diameter in my box of parts and since the transmission hasn't been run in the car before, it makes sense that it isn't there.

It is on the old one, I should have a spare. How man tooth gear do you need?
