700R4 GM in a Swinger?

I think I am going to do a 700r4 in my car. My tranny needs a rebuild. My tranny guy wants 500 for my 727 and 1000 for a 700R4. I am just wondering if I can make a mopar console shifter work with the gm trans. I just need to find an adapter.
 
No need to get a ford or gm overdrive trans. The early (up to 1995) 500 and 518 can do the same thing. Many ways to make it happen with our Chrysler transmissions, guys. Let's keep it all Mopar, eh? 8) :-D
 
When you rebuild the motor do we all go getting Mopar pistons-bearings or some other brand which might even be "better". Same with cams, lifters even gaskets.

Brakes, do we all go running out to the Mopar dealer for pads, rotors and calipers.

Wheels----well see were I am going / if a part works better than something that was design 40+ years ago why not use it?

Keeping it "stock" might be best resale value but for driving enjoyment it isn't.

Its too bad there isn't a good aftermarket auto trans, like the market is for manual trans were you have a pick of gear ratios and the unit is built to handle power right from the start. I could careless what name is put on the part (but keep the China junk back in China)

Personally, I'm going to try to keep my Mopar powered by Mopar components, but to each his own. There are a lot of nice Mopars out there with gm trans in them. I just feel like mine needs to stay in the family line. At any rate.. if you do some research on the A500, you'll find some companies that sell beefed up versions, supposedly handling up to 500+ horsepower in a street application. If I'm not mistaken, you won't have to beat or cut up your floorpan for this trans. AND you don't have to wire manual switches for it.. I don't care what anyone says. They just haven't done their homework.

This site - http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm#727TO518 - will tell you how to wire up a trans so you don't need manual switches everytime you hit a stoplight. If you'll do some searches online, I'm sure you'll find beefed up versions of the a500 to buy, and many places sell performance rebuild parts. I have compiled my own custom list for the a500 in my garage, from places like PATC, Jet, etc etc. Converters are easy to get, and as far as custom fab work, I think the only thing you'll have to do is fab a crossmember to bolt back up to your mounts, and have the driveshaft shortened. I'm going to try to use part of the trans crossmember out of the Dak I pulled the trans out of.

If you want this article,just p.m me with your email and I will send it to you. At least you will be better informed as to how much work is involved in swapping an overdrive chrysler into your swinger.

As for the company that wants to sell you a g.m tranny,thats exactly what they want to do,sell you stuff. It might be a good swap but Im sure you'll run into snags just like every non stock swap.

Several years ago I bit the bullet and had Extreme Automatics (Extreme Automatics) in Ohio build me a 200-4R reverse-pattern, full manual shift lockup transmission to go behind the 360 small block in my current '69 Dart build. Extreme Automatics cut the bellhousing off of the 200-4R and bolted on a new SFI-approved bell from Reid Racing.
I used the trans crossmember from U.S. Cartool (67-75 A-Body GM2004R Crossmember Kit).
The 200-4R fits in my '69 Dart tunnel without any surgery. It also has a better gearspread than any of the Mopar OD transmissions and uses less horsepower to turn it.
I will be running 4.30 gears in the differential and the 0.67 OD of the 200-4R will give me the equivalent of 2.88 gears while cruising down the highway.
Win/Win in my book.

5 years ago I replaced the original 700r4 in my 1990 gmc k1500 with a 500 hp rated monster trans. It has the rv shift kit installed . It is a night and day difference over the original clunky slippery noisey r4 . I would put a new one in my mopar in a heartbeat ,no pun intended.

A lot of them did. The one in the '83 Hurst Olds I used to own had problems.
I'm not talking about grabbing one in a scrapyard and putting it behind your healthy small block. Like any other transmission, rebuild one with upgraded heathy internals and it will live behind big power.
 
The drums in a 2004R are stamped sheet metal. Look inside your direct drum; stamped sheet metal to hold the clutches. The overdrive clutches are the cutest lil things ya ever did see.

Dont they have them figured out enough to with stand huge h.p. now too ??
 
My brother runs a 200 4R trans rated for 700 HP behind his 600+ HP 496 cube EFI big block Chevy in a 1970 Chevelle SS454. He has a separate switch mounted on the dash for the lock up, runs 3.73s in the rear end, and pulls down over 20 mpg on the highway.

this is exactly one of the options i was considering. any ETA on when you might be driving it?...and if you don't mind, how much was it delivered?
