71 Dart 410 stroker ..

And ...and ....we hit Barstow again....filling tank...I go pee....daughter was with truck and is putting pump away as I get back in the truck...we drive away...i noticed that the gauge is not on full but 3/4 tank...i asked how much gas did it take...16 gallon...should have taken more...ok...we will stop at Primm or world largest Cheveron station in Jean....well...we did not stop ...and as we are getting off I 15 at lake mead blvd ...truck dies...I am strong arming the steering and smashing the brake pedal as we come down the ramp....coast down the street and stop on side street...OUT of GAS...It must be the quarter finals......get gas can out of trailer jump on my bicycle and pedal 1/4 mile to gas station...LOL
 
Race this weekend in Vegas...Dont think the Dart is going to make it....as it is still in trailer...lol......Time out status...
 
We must overcome the curse of that Dart and Famoso!! Man I saw some weather reports there and you would have had a trophy time slip for sure!!
 
Ok...got the head off...can not see anything wrong with engine....will check the head and block with straight edge......the fire ring in cylinder one had broken away from the gasket...but it was spitting water out of cylinder 3......photo tomorrow
 
and two cylinders the gasket looks like an egg shape......will get a picture....
 
Ok...thanks everyone for their comments and suggestions....here is an update ....

went I started this post I already had cleaned and installed the Felpro 1008 on the head....so after reading the suggestions...I agree the fel pro gaskets are not going to survive.
since the head was on...I intalled the rockers and did an compression check to see what i would get and compare it to the passenger side head as it also had the fel pro gasket....figuring if this one is back the other side is going to take a crap too...

driver side with new gasket ...i get 210 psi cranking....passenger side with old fel pro is only 170 ish....so I could see the hand writing on the wall....both need to be replaced....So the cometics are on their way....

will give update once everything is back together...probably in a week or so....changing out rear ends in 71 Duster....
 
i got a trans leak at the dam shifter seal....probably screwed it up putting the valve body back in at Bakersfield.....valve body is coming out anyway since the solenoid is shot....
 
seal replaced...new transbrake in car...

both heads are off the car....i wanted to see what the passenger side head gasket looked like...it looked just fine......

going to clean the hell out of the decks....heads and block....and reassemble with the cometic head gasket....

got a 4 day weekend..so everything should be up and running ......
 
Found two bend pushrods don't know what cylinder they came of
Got new set in storage
 
Got rockers adjusted....passenger side headers on....easy side...I gave my daughter the drivers side to do....PIA,,,,,she done good...got all the bolts started ...and we are having FUN with tube no. 7 on these 1 7/8 tti....

filled trans up with fluid....will be running Saturday.
 
3.....as usual....get ready to fire this one back up.....Green Duster has new Dana in it and ready...and my Demon never comes out of the trailer..lol
 
yes....but there is a problem with the engine at this time....the heads will show up later this fall on a very similar short block which i was working on this afternoon......the old mp 557 cam appears to have flatten a lobe or two...

prior to the cam issue the car had picked up 3 tenths over the stock eddy heads...then they started to work on it...removed power valve but did not up jetting...should have been 83 square..they had it at 77 square...after they had adjusted the valves ...several adjusters and jam nuts had backed off...I gave them my LSM valve adjuster tool and torque wrench...but I think the damage was done.

the car probably will get a roll bar this summer also...and get rid of the heavy steel bumper plus the 5 mph shocks....
