So tomorrow I call Smith Bros pushrods in Oregon....and order a set....might order next size up....11/32 instead of 5/16 since the pushrod tubes are opened up....the W2 pushrods were 3/8 and had plenty of room...

One thing i like....the spec sheet said they springs were installed at 1.90.....and my spring checker said 1.89,,,,,,add a .060 and a .030 shim bingo...I am right at the 1.80 where i want to be........

I put a Eddy Super Victor on it.....see how it looks....lol

As always the garage is a mess....lol

I think the Super Victor is a real dud. With it on the 424/360 I could only get 470 lb-ft @ 3,000 rpm, 570 lb-ft @ 5,000 and 620+ hp @ 6,300 rpm. Poor thing is real chock block material.

Doorstop.

well...it will be a good test between the two intakes......Victor and Super Victor....IMM worked on the Victor....and supposedly the Super Victor was ported by Hughes....We usually run on a Saturday and Sunday....so an afternoon swap would not be that hard...

What a bust!

Had an issue this morning while shimming the valve springs...on the last exhaust valve as the spring was slowly released back up...a valve lock snapped....never in my life have seen this before....these are 7 degree locks....I used a set of comp cams 7 degree lock to replace both of them on that retainer...

Not sure if it is something i did or what?.......

Yep. It happens. They are so damn hard if you get the retainer cocked or the lock slides down just a skosh it will fracture the lock.

Even more common is valve train harmonics breaking locks while it’s running. You can break the lock if the you float the valves. I’ve never seen one let loose after it’s fractured, but I’ve taken apart many of them that are fractured.

I hated my super victor intake for about three hours. After it went 9.74 I started liking it a little more.

Why shim the springs down? To get more pressure or get closer to coil bind maybe?

the heads i bought have the spring height at 1.90 with 120 lbs on the seat....cam needs 140ish on the seat...I was told by someone with a lot of knowledge that the springs on the heads were PAC 1903 which are the same springs I use on the eddy/Sm heads...I checked the specs on the springs and yes he was correct same spring at different installation height....so I shimmed them down to 1.800 installed height that the Eddy head uses.....

I'm probably going to have the pac 1903 Springs put on my speed Masters as well due to your suggestion.. my only problem is I dropped them off at the machine shop tomorrow will be 5 weeks ago... And that's when he said I'll call you next week LOL..

That happened to me a few weeks ago. Lunati locks retainers and springs. Just as YR said.

You're pretty active for a geezer.
Gotta be active 'cause 'Social Distancing' around here is........Drive 30 miles outta town, hike 1-1/2 hours to a mountain ridge, glass deer and elk for 45 minutes, hike 1-1/2 hours back to truck and drive to the shop. When it stops snowing now and the sun comes out.......hike 6 miles in and spend a few days camping with my son.

Curious how much shim you had to install to get to 1.800 installed height.

Just a FWIW, that will depend on the retainer and how deep the seat was cut at the foundry. Never mind any other work done to the head or parts changed out.

Absolutely, I'm not looking to try and use his numbers or anything. I replaced all the valve hardware in my SMs, i was shimming the new springs/retainers yesterday, so the topic was in my head.

there was a shim on the head already...dont know what it was ....checked the height with that shim on there...I got 1.89 inches....I added a .060 and a .030 for a total of .090......rechecked height and it was at 1.80 inches.....

Pushrod are in....rocker arms and shafts on.....nothing adjusted cause engine would not turn .....rod bolt hitting pick up tube again...lol

Rod bolt hitting oil pick up tube ....just like on the other pick up tube...the butt weld...about the size of a pimple on the tube....thought i checked this before putting pan on as it did it before...well both pick ups now are cleared...lol

will adjust rockers and prime oil pump/engine tomorrow...put intake manifold on...

then confer with driver about getting it installed....probably a couple weeks away...
