74 power wagon dream truck...

-
Finally got time to work on the power wagon.. got the gas spout in, the bed tightened down, the tail lights and connected along with the ground wire from the cab to the bed. Got the exhaust tips on the rear bumper... Put the license plates on and give it some more timing and it seemed to not want to overheat anymore. Took it for it first real test drive and found that contrary to what the shifter says high range is low range and low range is high range. The steering was quite wonky but I have a an alignment scheduled for Thursday and still need to get the rear window put in...
@halfafish You're screwed!.. LOL..

Yeah, I figured this day was coming. If you saw the massive project going on at my house you'd understand why the truck is treading water at the moment. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but I'm not there yet. :(

Light at the end of the tunnel is actually the power wagon coming at you!!.....:D

And just when you see the light you go get another car, after all it was free!.....

Charged the AC yesterday and have an alignment scheduled for tomorrow...(had to cancel the last appointment do to weather no wipers or rear window)
Still need to get the back window in..

Got quite a few things done yesterday. Got the alignment and got my first real real test drive freeway and everything and most things seem fine. Put the stereo speakers and antenna. The antenna is one of those under dash hidden antennas. My wife and I got the rear window popped in and I still need to get the lock strip in. Kind of ran out of time yesterday. Everything seemed to be going fine...

They make a lock strip tool, buy one, it makes installing the strip super easy.

I forgot to say when I went to get my first full tank of gas I was really thinking ahead and grabbed a half a roll of paper towels and some Windex anticipating splurging gas down the side of the brand new paint... The fact that I brought it actually worked and I didn't split gas on the side of the truck thus making the paper towels and Windex a valuable tool in ant i-paint splashing......

Well I drove two and a half hours yesterday around trip to get what I thought was the correct rear window. My window seemed a little bit small and I know I got it out of a 72 Dodge truck. It wasn't pushing the seal all the way to its edges. When I talked to a local Dodge guru he said that 72 through 73 and 1/2 was a little bit smaller. I went out and got what I thought was a bigger glass and it turns out to be the same size as what I had in there:BangHead:....
Looks like I'll try the wrecking yard on Tuesday...

Now I'm starting to think it has to have a slider??..
Really don't want a slider but I may have to get one...
I've been in touch with a couple local gurus and they don't seem to know much or they're just guessing as well...

I had the same trouble with mine. I think all it is, is a difference in the rubber used for a solid window and a slider. I am replacing a slider with a solid window (using the original rubber from the slider) and mine fits real loose like that too. I have yet to look into a new gasket though.

Cley

I have a slider out of a 75 I could remove, but shipping would be risky.
I also have a solid glass out of a 76 but no rubber with this one.

Well another 3 hours round trip in the car and I have the complete lowdown...
It was my 72 window that I took out of a parts truck that I tried to put my 74. Probably the same problem you're having. So from top to bottom on the smaller one it's 13 and 1/2 in and on the bigger one it's 14 and 1/2 in. You can see how everything would fit much better. And down at the bottom the smaller one was 55 in at its widest point and the bigger one I didn't measure the width but I put them on top of each other and I'd say it was about an inch bigger as well and at the bottom I had just a slightly different kind of curvature....
Here's the funny story about it.. The guy that I got it from must have at least 10 trucks semi-hole and his parted out probably 100 and has all the parts from them and he's taken out lots of these windows but he's never put one in... So when he told me yeah that's the bigger one yesterday and I took off he didn't really know what the hell he was talking about... In the end I got the new well used scratched up window in... If it's nice and tight and I bought a brand new seal sometime ago...

We got our first real real real shake down run and today...
We drove it through town and it was still a little cool and I turned on the AC and my wife was like yikes That's freezing me out! But it made my heart feel warm lol...
I think I need to research how to tighten the steering box a little and if that doesn't work change it out it's still a little sloppy feeling... It likes to wander a little bit too much for what it is I don't mind it a little bit but just a little bit too much.
Also when we cut it on the freeway and got above 50 it sounded like the transfer case was screaming. Then when I got it going a little faster like maybe 70 it started quieting down? It didn't feel like a driveline but it was more of a sound...
Then also when we stopped at the park for the picture I could smell the back brakes were hot and I had a feeling that they were a little too tight. When I got home with my temperature gauge that was 100% confirmed. I backed them off and I haven't retestrove it yet. I don't know if that could have had something to do with the noise but it certainly sounded like it was a transfer case..

I'm pretty sure this is what I put in it...
I can also see it leaking out of the input housing and the rear drive housing a little bit. So much for my rebuild...

Damn, that truck looks good with the trees behind it ! I have to say , that's one of the fastest frame / body off restorations that I've seen. Nice work !!:thumbsup:

Now he needs to bring it over here and defeat some of our steep washout roads.
He can try to follow me up buffalo hump for a washout rock climbing adventure to about 10,000 Ft. lol

"TRY!".......:bs_flag:...:D...
The last time I went up, the truck bounced off a rock and ended up in a rut with the front axle housing resting on the ground, if it wasn't for the winch and shovel, I'd still be up there.
That was 10 years ago, I have no desire to tackle that nasty climb again. lol
