A potential problem with Super Sixing my 1973 Duster.

If yur looking for more power, with the two-barrel, with no other mods, I can tell you that I was very disappointed in the change, per dollar spent.
If yur looking for better fuel economy, same answer.
I finally pumped my 225 up to 9.5 Scr, and that was worth every cent I spent.

I never understood the requirement to use the "Super Six" air cleaner housing. I was able to modify my original single barrel carburetor's air cleaner to work on the Carter two-barrel carburetor when I installed the Super Six setup. i just peened the part of the air cleaner that touched the choke plate butterfly linkage for clearance. Slant Six Dan might know the reasons why you need the Super Six Air Cleaner housing. I have been running mine for 20 years without any issues.
My 2 cents...................

Main reason is the choke horn (top of carburetor) is "fatter" on the 2 barrel than the 1 barrel.
Looks like you're running the earlier version of the BBD? Some people called the newer version the "tin top" BBD. Those came out in around 74-75ish. Nothing wrong with the older version, just don't see them as much anymore

Be nice if you'd show some pictures of the base. That way, maybe some of our lesser of fabricators (like me) might get some ideas on how to modify theirs.

I should have mentioned before that I'm running an early to mid 70's 318 two-barrel carb. I apologize for any confusion.

I have a 60's "super 225" air cleaner I wanna use for mine, I was just gonna cut the center out and then cut the center out of one of my (scrap) 318 lean burn air filter housings and MIG the 2 together...

1bbl carb takes a 2-1/8" diameter air cleaner base hole
2bbl carb takes a 2-5/8" diameter air cleaner base hole

Your mod is clever, but that sharp edge won't seal well, so dirt will get in even before the sharp edge slices through the air cleaner/carb gasket.

That's what I did on my '62. I was never happy with how the weld itself came out (sloppy/ugly) but the graft job did work. Make sure to take a big enough circle out of the donor 2bbl air cleaner to clear all the sticky-outy parts* near the top of the carb.

*technical term

Dan, I do understand what you are saying about cutting the air cleaner/air horn ring. However, there is no light visible between the modified air cleaner hole and the air cleaner gasket when installed. I don't drive the car that much, but the carburetor has stayed clean throughout the years. I didn't like the look of the "Super Six" air cleaner housing especially on a 65 Valiant.
As always, your input is invaluable.

Decent effort at a test, but probably not good enough to squash the doubt.

the carburetor has stayed clean

This reminds me of when people say "I run my high beams all the time; I know it's fine because I don't get flashed". The one doesn't follow from the other. Likewise, a clean carburetor is a fine thing, but many kinds of dirt that can get in and brutalize your engine aren't going to make your carb look dirty.

Me either, so I used a '66 318-2bbl air cleaner on my '65. That wasn't an option on the '62 (hood clearance).
