I'm getting close to ready to start on my 70 swinger & currently in the process of building a 471 stroker with a 73 #630block
Molnar 3.915 crank, 6.70 rods & srp 1.320 pistons. Trickflow 240s up top & a howards solid flat tappet 260-264 @.050 .616-.620 lift, I was told this would be a great choice by a howards rep for a street/strip. I recently talked with Hughes engines since they have the identical cam & asked him what he thought, he punched in some numbers for me & said this cam is too big for my 11.4:1 scr & would be a pump gas engine at 12.5:1 so now I'm kinda stuck a bit, with 0.27 cometic gaskets .000 deck & milling my new tf240s down to 75 cc I can get 12.13 scr. I was wondering & hoping if I'm thinking correctly could I get a 9 was timing set & advance my cam 6-8 degrees.
I believe I have a 8.6 dcr with 185 cranking pressure. Hughes says 195-200 is safe & advancing my cam 8 degrees puts it at 199 psi. I trust Hughes but howards has this at needing 10.5 minimum. Any advice would be great. Thank you

Can't help with your cam, but I'm on Vashon Island and have been working on 70 Darts since my Dad bought one new. Currently have 2 on the road and one in process - 70 Dart GT. Been hoarding parts for along time so if you need stuff send a PM.

Thank you very much. Do you go out to sunbust ever. 70 gt sweet, hardly ever see them.

Sunbust - Almost every year for the last 20. Are you interested in the other Mopar only shows from Wood Burn OR to Langley BC? I can get you a list with this year's dates. If you have been to Sunbust you would have seen my car shown in the avatar. It has a 340 with 2 four barrels on a cross-ram.

Have you been to Woodburn in July?..

Welcome to the forum!!..
9's.. ?
Automatic transmission?
Any pictures of the car??...
I don't have any pics, I can describe it though. It's a project f-4 swinger /6 green guts with 4 flat 14 inch tires. I got this car from a guy with no title $400.00 absolutely rust free, so I've gotta do the state patrol rigamarole. I've been collecting parts for it for about 2 years. I'm getting ready to take my block down to the machine shop in auburn wa, AAM., still alot of work to go considering mini-tubs, narrowing a c-body housing to the axles & 15×10 welds. Yes an auto trans from my buddy Tim it was in a b-body that pulled the wheels off the ground & I plan on running a 3800-4000 stall.
Very soon, I'm digging in on the car, I'm planning a YouTube series "how to" on big block dart, it will feature all victories & mistakes. (after I finish my wife's master suite & bathroom remodel, special thanks to the corona virus for the extra time)
I don't know what the car will be capable as a street/strip car but I'm thinking it's going to be a handful & possibly not legal to run after the first pass. I'm planning on a 8 point cage & hope the 8.75 will last a while

I'd love the details for those shows. I'll check my photos I'm pretty sure I've seen your dart up there. It's a beautiful car

Me personally, I'd get the title before I put a dime into it.. also it's much easier to put a roll bar in now... And anything under 10's consistently you need deal pockets...

No where's Woodburn ?
I quoted str12-340 as from your conversation I assumed you hadn't been there...
Woodburn drag strip is in Woodburn Oregon about an hour south of Portland... In July they hold an event called the Mopar Nationals.. drags, car show, swapmeet...

Yes sir youre correct. State patrol 1st after I pull the mint grill off. If they take it then I'll have to suck it up & go after my dream 68 dart. I'm hopefully buying a AC/DC tig today so I can do all the cage work myself. But other projects I'm looking into is making long tube headers for the dakota r/t boys & girls & second sheet metal custom big block intake manifolds for our fellow moparians.

Any idea how deep them pockets will need to be ?

Most not all but I would say 95% at least of the consistent under 10-second cars come on a trailer... There is a huge swing in requirements... Definitely browse NHRA rule book.. your cage will have to be certified I believe every two years along with a laundry list of requirements... Most who have claimed they have done 10 seconds cheap don't do it for long...

Yes for a Mopar guy it is quite a bit of fun and worth a small day trip... What I think is funny is there is some cars drag racing that would probably win first place trophies at the car show and cars in the car show that if their owner had any cojones would probably win in the drag races LOL but no trophy for them in the car show lol.. swap meet is kind of cool because it's not going through 300 tons of Chevy and Ford stuff to get to the Mopar stuff it's all Mopar...

Thanks for the insights jpar, I have looked at the nhra rule & yeah there's alot of extras involved, I'm waiting for howards cams to return my call & might be looking at a [email protected] .576 lift cam for a better overall cam. Hughes told me I'd be leaving some power on the table without bumping up to 12.5 & I can get 11.6 By changing head gaskets. I was wondering if advancing the 260-264 cam 4 degrees would be fine to help the bottom end street driving? Or can I advance more like 6 or 8 & go back to straight up for the track ? Any thoughts on that?

I'll say a couple things here... First off I'm a big fan of Oregon cam grinding (in Vancouver Washington) there's an old man named Ken that owns the place and you can ask for specifically. No waiting in line no waiting for some techline kid to call you back and no hype..
With that said you may want to put your questions out on the Race part of the Forum and start a thread there... keep in mind you're going to get a wide variety of opinions... What I usually do is collect all these opinions and draw my own conclusion... always remembering this is the internet and there are people who are able to write and say things that self-perpetuate themselves into being the correct answer when it's just ego...
I believe a lot of advancing or over advancing your cam will be experimental to your specs... I believe there'll be a baseline to work by in the cam grinders should give you that. Also remember Hughes engines does not grind cams...
keep in mind you're talking to somebody who has been told they have the slowest Stroker motor on the entire forum...lol..

Right on, I'll take all that into consideration.
I appreciate your time and it's funny you mention the Hughes thing because howards sells the exact grind. So I guess it's howards. Have a good day. Thanks again

Come down to Woodburn it’s always good time. I’ll be there in my rusty red 65 Dart I’m daily driving it now 30+miles a day. Dustin
Oh you're down there in grave yard territory.

Yes I’m about 2 miles away from Graveyard cars. They wouldn’t blink an eye if I stopped to BS at the shop there.
what do you mean by they wouldn't blink an eye? I'm sorry that internet or texting or whatever losses me sometimes...
