Just curious where the point is that a low gear set might make car ET better, as mine is fairly heavy and currently hooks anywhere.
Experiences , thoughts?

I have always run a 4.56 gear and a 29.0 inch tall slick. It has done 60' 1.42-1.44 footbraking with a 727 torqueflight. Don't know what the 1st gear ratio is. Years ago I tried a 32 inch tire and didn't see much if any difference in 60'. I think the key is to get the gear ratio to where it shifts down from the max hp range to where it is making max torque so you don't bog on the shift.

The stock gearing is 2.45/ 1.45/1.00 for the 727 and 904. I bought the low gear set for my 904, but haven't decided if I am going to use it just yet. I woukd like to get my converter issues fixed first. But I only have a stock stroke 360 magnum engine. Looks like a stroker wouldn't need the low gear set because of the extra torque produce by the stroker crank. But like most of this stuff is above my pay grade. Lol

I have a 904 and stroker, but the car is on the heavy side. Just curious if it would do me any good.
Plan to freshen trans and have vert readjusted this offseason anyhow, so thought about looking into this

I have one in the AMX I race, 3120 lbs but the AMC engine isn't a stroker. In fact is is a large bore, short stroke 390. It is a Torque Command trans, 904 with a AMC bellhousing. I am sure your stroker engine has more torque than the AMX, so I am not sure if you would benefit, but with every track going 1/8 mile, might help reaction time.

I’m setting up a 416 and swapping my low gear set to high gear set in my 904…my thoughts are to let the converter do the work. My low gear set was awesome behind the 360. We run our SLRs a little higher up here too though. What are you at currently and where are you thinking you’d go with it? I’d be scared to mess with it if it’s hooking, and that 1-2 will come up pretty quick, maybe your air shifting though?

no air shifter. No issues hooking.
Just spitballing, don’t know if it would be worth the trouble or not.

28 tire, 4.30 gear
My 360 setup is 4.10 with a 28, 2830 lbs on the line, SLR = 11.23. Hooks with 1.48-1.52 60’…hook ratio is 1310-1320. Not sure how heavy you are, maybe the jump from 10.5 to 11.78 will be okay? May just need some suspension and launch rpm adjustment.

3350 at the line, I footbrake, car mostly is 1.48 to 1.50 60 foot, has been 10.68 so far.
Do think front shocks needed tightened up( too much separation) and needs more flash regards convertor.

I went from 3:55's to 4:10s and didn't see any gains.... But mind you I have the slowest stroker on the internet so take that with a grain of salt LOL...

What kind of mph? Thinking 123-125 range? Your combo seems pretty well setup as is. Might try more converter as you mentioned. Might be a simpler first step than getting into the tranny gears. But if you’re pulling it apart for a freshen up anyway then it’s just an argument with the wallet at that point.

For further reference, I footbrake off idle, flash to about 4,800 coming out of the hole, then drop to about 5,400 on the 6,800 shifts. I’m only 11.50s at 113-114 (send some air my way would ya?!?!)

589ci street wedge motor with low 1st gear in 727, SLR 11.23, 4.10's with 10x29's, 1.42 60 best@3800lbs@line, max power is only 690 from 5500-5900, traps@6200-ish, there's cars running slower 60's in the 9 7's and with lighter cars, our best is 10.30>50's.

589 !! What's the block, bore, and stroke ??

yes, you are correct on everything.

From reading your posts in regards to your car I would first rather see you try more converter, bigger carb, bigger headers, more cam first before going the low gear set route. Also this question should also be run by your transmission builder or at least the transmission vendor where you buy your internal parts from as to what he thinks, on one of my cars it makes enough power that I was suggested to run a higher first gear ratio than stock which is getting away from what you were asking about but I think trans guy input would be important.

Damn, what a monster !!
A very tame monster, only 10:1cr, small s/roller, big MW 365cnc heads, big torque, fill up with V-power at the pump and street driven to track and raced with full exhausts and a puny old 950HP DP, with a TCI street 4200 stall converter.

I just installed a 904 with low gear set. I run 4:10 rear gear with a 26’ rear tire. For me it was absolutely worth it. If the tire spins it will drive through it better. I think I will have picked up 3/10’s total swapping from 727 to low gear set 904. However I also went from steel driveshaft to aluminum. Over 7 lbs lighter and upped my flash 300 rpm. So not a “typical” 727 to 904 swap. 410ci stroker.

I have considered it with my 418" small block because my car is 3580 lbs with driver. But my reasoning was a little different. The car leaves hard 1.416 60ft, [email protected] but was running out of gear with a 4.10. I was going to use my low gear set to keep the SLR similar but put a 3.73 gear in to help get it out the back.

Instead of that plan I changed cams to get some RPM. The new cam runs the 1/8th mile the same but doesn't run out the back :(. Exactly opposite of what downsides I thought the new cam could bring(welcome to drag racing)

My AMX was too violent with the stock 2.45 gear set. I had Keith Long " 727 specialist " build me a 904 with a 2.13 first gear. it's much calmer now and more consistent.
