Anybody running 17" Cobra Bullit rims on a Duster

-
Sorry it's taken so long guys, but I was trying to reply thursday morn and lightning took out my PC, modem, and wireless router!!! Can you say Damn-it!!!
Anyways, Autoxcuda is correct in that I don't need all the spacer in front, to clear suspension parts, but it gets me more clearence over the dust cap and keeps the front tires off the stock sway bar. I got the idea, for close to 3/4 inch spacing, from AndyF, on this and his websites.
The wheels I'm running are 2003 specials and are Ford Motorsport wheels at only $100 a piece, from a place called the Modular Depot, in northern Kentucky. The Depot has been a Mustang specialist for a long time, but is branching out into all the late model American muscle, including a Challenger they were supercharging, when I picked up these wheels.

Are you running the wide 67-72 Abody sway bar K-member and lower control arms?? With the wide sway bar a high backspace rim will hit the swaybar at max turning. -Another reason to use a 73-76 K-member.

IIRC, Clair Davis found inexpensive sources for Mustang torque thrust knock off rims that have a larger center register for Mopar center caps?? Clair??

that is probably American Muscle. that is where i got my bullitts from.

Not found by me, I think it was Rob McCall. The brand is on ePay all the time, but they don't specifically claim to fit anything but Mustangs. I'll see if I can find the brand and info and post it up.

I just got my wheels and tires mounted today, looks like a 5/16" spacer is plenty for the rear. I am running 225/50/R17. Still gotta get the car off the jacks to see how the fronts will fit, seems like you can go pretty damn wide in the back before hitting the lip of the rear quarter!

That's the place. I don't know if they set the hubs up to be "generic" and just big, or if they actually bore it to 73mm so that a range of popular hub rings can be used. Probably worth a call to check & see.

With the bullitt rims, do those require the bulge seat lugnuts? Aren't tapered only for steel wheels?

ckj688,
Thnkin' you're correct.
i thought theyd use bulge seats too but american muscle sold me regular chrome acorns for the bullits i bought from them. after turning down the end of the rotor, i didnt need any spacer, its tight but nothing rubs. i cant get a center cap to fit though. my inside weights did get a guage from the grease fitting on a good pothole the other day but they didnt get ripped off nor did the grease fitting so all is well.

The OE Ford wheels I have (95 Cobra) use tapered seat lug lugs just like almost any other wheel. The only really funky lug nuts I'm familiar with are the ones used on my Honda - some sort of a ball seat arrangement that is spherical where it meets the wheel.

Now if you mean bulge seat like some of the wider Jeep lug nuts - basically a flared portion wider than the nut portion of the lug itself, then those are great IF they'll fit the wheel. There are lot of wheels that use fairly narrow "tuner" lugs that you can't fit a socket over, and those seem to work OK, but wouldn't be my first choice. For my Cobras, I'm using a 13/16" tapered seat lug that is a little over 1" long so the lugs show through the center caps.

Yes,on the front the grease cap will stick out.(the retaining lip for the center cap doesn't clear the grease cap) I was planning to make an aluminium center & connect it to my grease cap.The rear push in muscle motors cheap plastic centers worked fine on the rear.

I have the 17" 05 GT wheels (6.29 back spacing, Granada Rear), gives another inch width in rear over old 7 1/4, and the front rotor snout machined down. I also have 1" spacer in rear. The center ford cap was removed and the 3 bar knock off snapped in place. This gives added space for dust cap. All on '67 Fastback Cuda.

Hi guys ! I am fully interest in change my wheels, I'm actually using 235/60 R 14 front and rear, I would like to try 235/40 R18 at the front and 275/40 R18 in chrome Mustang Bullit - Bullet Wheels 18x9 front and 18x10.5 set, but, I'm not very sure about my backspacing and I don't have my car now because I'm far from home and is not possible for me to take measures by my self. Could you please help me on this ???

This is the link of the wheels I like but in 17" same bolt pattern, I think rears are going to look wider to outside (please correct me if I'm wrong) and it's great for me because the distance between rims is smaller rear than front and with this rims they are going to look the same size. (I hope you know what I mean) what I dont know is if they are going to fit (Backspacing) on my Dart Sport 74 ? and if I have to ask for a different spec. How I have to do it ?
Thanks for any help in advance ! I will wait for your answer !
PD: Sorry about any mistake, I,m new on this !

Visiting this thread again! 17x9 Cobra R now with aprox. 6 inches of backspace and 275/40/17 tire. Looking to go 18's next. 8)

No spacers. Center register in wheels clearanced to fit. Wider '67 B-body 8 3/4 out back, springs moved in .80".

Looks outstanding, Chris!

When you re-lo'd the spring perches, did you HAVE to move them in 0.80, or did you do that for a smidge extra clearance? If I can find the right BS wheels, I think I've got plenty of room without the extra tidbit - not Duster-plenty, but enough for a box car.

Clair

Thanks, Clair!

I had to move the springs in for them to fit. They have (I think) 5.94" of backspace, which is more than some of the other cobra/bullit wheels if I remember correctly.

Is yours the white '69 Valiant? What rims do you have now?

Yep, I've got a 69 Valiant, running 1995 8" Cobra wheels - 5.7" BS. With 245/45's, I've got over an inch to the springs in stock location, so I need to add at least 1/2" more wheel on the inside. If I did it JUST RIGHT, I might be able to run an honest 9" wheel and a 275/40, but I haven't found the right wheel yet. May just go with 18" wheels if I make the leap when these tires are dead. Since I've only got about 200 miles on them, it's going to take a while...

Awesome info here! How much wheel does anyone have on a 68 cuda / Mustang wheels ? A buddy has a set of 17x8's but I think I might go to 18s if they will fit. I'm using a 68 bigblock K frame, 73-up upca and disks, A-body 8-3/4 rear with Yukon axles, 3 inch studs all around for now. I have 15" draglites now but want more rim. I have a real issue with front wheel well clearance at the leading edge. (back spacing is all wrong for the fronts) rear tires are 275's and have about 1/2 " clearance to the spring.

Another thing I noticed on your cars, some calipers are to the front and some are in the rear of the front hub. Does it make a difference? Mine are mounted behind the hub right now. Are my spindles swapped left to right?

it doesnt matter. it can make sway bar clearance better but be a pain for factory brake hoses.

Thanks jamesdart. I have them on the back and you're right about the hoses. They look like they will rub the tire. I might switch them to the front.

Wait a second.. Do the spindles have the holes for both front and rear mount on them? or do you have to do something else to them?
