On my 273 commando I have an LD4B with a 600cfm edelbrock. It’s a great carb but it’s not a good match for this setup IMO.

i require a 1200 word essay on what exactly you don't like about it and why it's not a good match. please cite any sources in the bibliography and index. assignments are due thursday at 10am and i will deduct points for assignments handed in late.

No footnotes? You're letting him off easy!

Factory 273 AFBs will likely be hard to find, might need rebuilding. That is why I suggested the Edel 500 AFB, it is the right size for a stock 273.

That's the one. There is a reason it's free. It looks pretty rough.
I never took you for a negative Nelly.
I've given stuff away, that members have thrown negative bs at me for doing it. I don't understand why someone would be pissed that I gave someone else something for free.
Have you been given stuff for free, yes, it's a rhetorical question.

In terms of appearance, The Statue of Liberty is more corroded by the years, definitely needs work,......does anyone give a **** about her appearance, no, she is our symbol of freedom.

In the case of the carb, yes, you can polish a turd.

Not trying to be negative just truthful. The OP is switching from a factory 2 barrel to a LD4B and a 4 barrel. He wants to stick with a Carter style carb as stated in post 26. It's good you are offering that carb for free and he can surely get it and rebuild it. I wish him luck and it's not one I would want to resurrect. Those carbs can be problematic with their vacuum secondary diaphragm, fuel transfer tube sealing, shrinking metering block gaskets and blown power valves. I have rebuilt a few dozen of them and I am really not a fan.

Oh boy here come toolmans followers
To the rescue, " he said it, therefore it's gospel "
That can be resurrected? Based on the pictures it looks like it's corroded and/or seized-up, and more of a core than anything else.

Of course I could be wrong....

You are, The "corrosion" is fire retardant from an extinguisher
Not seized up
It is a core, im not presenting it as a slap on carb.

Post 26. Often, what you want and what you get are completely different.

I was offering a different solution, and got bashed for it because I didn't
"Follow along with the general consensus"
I had my own ideas.

What is the best choice all around Carter 4-barrel carb for a stock 66 273 with stock exhaust manifolds and an Edelbrock LD4B intake manifold?
Thanks in advance.
I would focus on a Performer 500 or AVS2 500, either with electric choke. The choke can be adjusted to barely come on or backed right of. Even on a Commando it will give snappy performance.
On a Commando engine, the AVS2 650 will provide more power.
All around performance on a stock 273, chose the AVS2 500. The overall performance and fuel economy will be better than a larger carb.

If you are keeping the "2-barrel, stock cam", a 500 cfm carb will give good response and better mileage. If you think you may need to change carb jets, then get one with easily replaced jets. If it is an automatic, you probably won't use the secondaries very often.

Are you going to give it an exhaust system that will let it exhale better?

Make sure the timing is optimal; you can develope your own advance curve with a dial-back timing light and a plot of a few points with just mechanical and with vacuum advances. Compare that to curves for a factory, 4-barrel engine and you will be able to see if you have the distributor set up correctly. Tuning is critical to get a properly running engine.

Well I don't know how popular this will be but I used a quadrajet. It sits on a cast intake. Jets are easily dialed in. Has electric choke. Had to use lil imagination for kickdown but the 67 cuda w/273 runs great and when the 4bbl opens up it's got that mean air rush noise.
