I have the original scoops from my 71 duster, there is pitting on the surface, what is the best way to fix this

also my hood doesn't

have the cutout in the reinforcement, does this mean my hood is a 73 and up, the holes for the scoops are factory

Interesting note, I always thought the black bezels on those scoops were plastic, they are pot metal!

I've never seen black bezels, they're always chrome and nope they aren't plastic.

I know the hole wasn't there, I'm talking about the cutout in the reinforcement under the hood, the half moon where the hole would be on the outside. see the pic I posted, that cutout isnt there and makes me think the hood is not original, but it looks original as far as I can tell

Interesting! I thought all of those hoods got the relief in the stamping of the underbracing regardless of whether or not they got scoops, both of my '71's have that relief in the bracing but neither had scoops. Looks like at some point they ditched the relief, but they kept the mounting holes for the scoops.

What is the build date of your car? Guessing they lost the relief in the bracing at some point late in '71 because the '72 hood scoop was different. My April build '71 still has them...

As for the pitting, they're basically a fiberglass type material so any decent body filler should take care of the pits.

@72bluNblu from what I saw on another post, it has the correct hinge adjustment plate located in the hood instead of the slots with fixed nuts in the hood. but it could be a replacement hood I wouldn't know how to tell

Dusters never had the cutouts in the hood to place the water dams as the Darts and Demons. They were only available on the Twisters not the performance Dusters in 71 - 72, All Twisters had the black scoop bezels. Demons were available with either.

@Oldmanmopar my 72 duster had the reliefs cutout out in the reinforcement along with the holes for both types of scoops in the reinforcement. I did already know that the dusters didnt come with the waterdam cutouts.

I think I may be mistaken, I'm gonna have to find those pictures of my 72. they would be from 41 years ago and my memory ain't as good as it used to be.

@Oldmanmopar LOL you were right, I actually found those old pictures and sure enough, no reliefs in the bracing! So it must be only the dart style hoods that had the reliefs.

and I did own a dart in the 80's for a couple of years, that must of been where I remembered seeing those reliefs.

Sorry for the confusion, I totally forgot that the hood scoop thing was different between the Dart/Demons and the Duster because the 340 Dusters didn't get hood scoops, only the Twisters did and that wasn't a performance model so no holes in the hoods.

@72bluNblu I just realized from oldmanmopars posts that the reliefs I remembered were in a dart that I owned in the 80's.

now to figure out how to cut the reliefs without tearing up the hood. I want to make the scoops functional just for the cool factor. I've read somewhere that they don't really work like a regular scoop because of the opening being to close to the hood.
