big block pro comp heads

-
Getting back to the Pro-Comp heads. Has anyone here used them? I've been thinking about using these on my 499 buil
these heads can make big power dont buy the assembled ones use good valves and springs matched to your cam might need some machining to enlarge push rod holes for clearence and like any other heads porting makes power my machinist said the castings looked real nice but buy the time im done with machining and parts im right up there with the price of the edelbrock victor head

The Bare Edel Victors come with the same machine work required as a bare set of ProComp Victors...... I know its still LOTS cheaper... I use these heads myself! I LOVE them!
I use the MP .590 cam and EDM oil thru lifters. Custom pushrod lengths are required for this setup too.
My build is very similar to yours,,, maybee more comp, but that's about it.
My build is this:
440 .030" bored
Steel Crank
H-Beam Rods
Main stud girdle
.140" domed forged pistons
<BALANCED ROTATING ASSY>

.040" thickness head gaskets
Victor procomp version Heads
1.6 ratio rockers
EDM oil through lifters
Custom length pushrods
MP .590" lift @ 1.5 .6293" @ 1.6
Double roller timing set
Edel Victor Intake
Holley 4150 850cfm DP carb "TO SMALL!"
8qt oil pan
sheet metal aluminum valve covers

With this said,,, I can tell you that you'll want to go right into a 4500 1050cfm Holley and use the 4150 to 4500 adapter. This gives you the CFM it WILL want, and also takes place of the 1" spacer the big blocks like with Victor Heads.

Some photos along the way...:happy1:

want my engine to last a long time its been a financial sacrafice to build im gonna lauch at 3500 and shift at 6500 if gear ratio is to steep i will change it you tell me one rotation of tire to 5 plus rotations of the drive shaft and looking up the gear ratios that 8 3/4s came with think its 5.17 i didnt pick those gears came with the car.

6500 rpm wont kill the motor any time soon, plus the car being soooo light takes a ton of stress off the entire drivetrain!

It's the piston speed which is the limiting factor. The faster the piston travel's the more pounding it takes. But heck ,even cast pistons are fine at 6500.

Thanks for the help guys im going to change the gears to 4.10s and install a spool in my 742 case 8.75 the 727 is going be rebuilt and the 446 is being balanced and short block will be assembled need valve springs and hardware to finish heads, exchanged edelbrock torker 2 for a victor gonna buy a 950 or 1050 main body and put together a carb with parts from my 850 any other help is greatly appreciated want to get everything i can out of this ***** do you think she will lift foot braking or only with a trans brake.

looks great are those pro comp rockers looks like they are what do you think of them hope they hold up read some crap about the early ones and good things about the new ones did you have a problem with spring clearance thanks Roger

I got mine just when the "new" ones came out last summer. Oh and yes ProComps they are.
I looked closely at them before using though..... I was surprised to find they are actually pretty damn tough! I had a valve strike when my camshaft failed "Used standard engine oil" and I bounced the pushrod up onto the highest point of the lifter. This caused a valve strike at RPM! The darn rocker arm held up perfectly and only bent the exh valve.
After tear down, repairs, and re assembly I decided to keep the rockers! I ran it up in RPM's pretty good since then many times and no failures....
I think some rockers come from various manufacture had the "touching the spring" issue when pockets cut aren't made deep enough for the particular spring dia you use in your build. I have read several posts where guys simply cut it out some more until they don't touch..
BTW I use 4.10:1 gears too, and run a 727 with reverse Cheeta manual VB. The converter is a Coan 3500 rpm and I wish it was more! I would love to have a 4500 rpm 9.5" converter to optimize the launch and a little better in gear idle.
I have lots of tire spin with Hoosier slicks on the road, but I suspect this will be much better at the strip! I think it might muster the front wheels up foot braking, and certain it will with a 4500 rpm converter if it hooks at the strip good enough.
A trans brake would be a NO Brainer if I wanted to do wheelies! That would certainly hang the front end plenty high!
I don't think it takes tons of power to lift the wheels when using a trans brake, and traction is good!

droped off 727 at tranny shop today hope it not to bad $450.00 to frenshen it up i hope gonna get a BDr torque converter 3500-3800 stall on ebay for $479.00 another grand down the toilet! WHY DO WE DO THIS!

Why indeed. Then you have to hope it all works and there are no further problem's with the items rebuilt. And if there is a problem you haveta hope the rebuilder aint a sleazebag and will honour it.

Unfortunately honour is a rare commoditiy these days..more often than not,you get a sleazebag .

yes it looks cool higher hp rating than the bdr i saw on ebay its a few bucks more plus shipping not sure about sfi on converter i know the flex plate needs to be i have one thats sfi thanks for thread

Roger - Who's doing the machine work? I thought your car had a dana?

Hey Dave been a while the rear is a 8.75 742 case with 5.17s going to change to 4.10s and a spool. eastwoods is doing the machine work and most of the assembly i bought a 68 440 block and crank and mains i found in the reminder i purchased all the parts myself sold the 383 to cory at atkins action auto up the street from me.motor should make 650 hp give or take a little.

What scares me is the 5:17 gears, with 29.5 tire. Ouch.I'll take a guess, and Iam thinkin' 8,000 rpm's through the lights!

wait what? I know this thread is yrs old,but you guys are & have been running those Pro comp rockers? everyone has been tripin' out over..
I'm putting together a set of Crane gold/Hughes 600 off set rockers
.. we'll see

the heads use .650 offset roller rockers and im using eagle 4340 forged h beam rods .990 pin with je forged flat tops 2 valve relief the first castings of these heads used .450 offset and there were problems casting and rockers have been improved with good valves and springs and and a little machining these head will make great power 72 cc cumbustion chambers and 280runners combaired to others with 75cc 78cc 80cc 84cc and 88cc and smaller runners the valves are 1.81 and 2.20
I`ve got a set of procomps on my 505, the valves are certainly bigger than whats stated here. they are 219 and 181. mine are cnc ported(standard port) , use .650 offset rockers. On an 18 time national record holders flow bench, they flowed 352 @.0600, but didn`t go up much w/ higher lift. should be a kick *** street and strip head! Mine required extensive pushrod tunnel clearancing, even after the cnc job. aalso changed to 10 degree stuff.----jfyi------bob

I have a set of bare castings if anyone is interested in them. Sell them cheap too.

I've heard nothing but outstanding results from these Victor clone castings from pro comp
their rocker arms,Not so much.. Where is the original poster? he still with us?

What I'd like to get a load of is a pic of the dermal work done to relieve the pinch on the pushrod holes

No not cnc. The Cnc from procomp is not all that good. Best have it done elsewhere.

I ran a '69 cuda with a stock CR 440-6 motor, team G, 850DP, big SFT cam, BV 906 heads etc., at 3000lbs all in and went 10.7@125 easy with less than 500hp. To get your 600hp at 440ci your gonna need at least 12.5:1 and 320cfm+ heads, but with 29.5" slicks and 5.17's it'll trap at 8000+rpm at S/G times, that cam will be done way before that so some 4.30's would be more appropriate I would've thought so you trap at around 7000, or 4.56's with something like the same cam I ran....CC..650"/[email protected] and trap at around 7300 where its still going.

The 4.10's your going to fit (just read it)......are a much better idea then you'll be turning 6300ish + verter slip and your cam will work.

If your going to run 8th mile keep the 5:17. Quarter mile, for your cam, 4:30, 4:56 gears. The tallest and widest tire you can get under it. Eddy-Victor or M-1 work good, Carb should be around 850-950 cfm. 2 inch header. Like the guy before me said this combination likes a duration of 270-285 degrees at .050, lift in the .620 - .640 range.
But with 5:17 forget it. Your rpm level will yield short life. Your "modified" stock oiling system is all in at 7000 rpm.
