Buying from afar

While you're in there Wayne, I wonder if you could get a template of plastic gear? @Dana67Dart is doing 3d printing and would probably be pretty cheap to make?
Thank you so much. Was looking for a youtube video or something for a heads up and you just gave it to me. Opening that puppy up is my next step. What did you use for lube? I have some synthetic wheel bearing grease I was thinking of.

Interesting tidbit for yall. I posted on FBBO at the exact same time, there have been 23 replies to my post here and I'm still waiting for the first reply there. FABO ROCKS! Preciate you all!

Now the surprises begin. Headlight relay wasn't working for some reason.

Worn out internal limiter switches.

Just received a replacement speedo cable. Hoping its the cable causing the speedo to rattle and jump, although the PO was not gentle with the speedo. We'll see.

Cleaned up and bench tested the relay, functioning like it should but the aftermarket led headlights may be causing some electrical issues.

Speedo was disconnected when I got the car, so its just a simple matter to reconnect it. right? Reconnected it and its jumping all over the place. I previously posted the speedometer was only held in place with 1 cross threaded screw when I got the car, so unknown history behind that. Anyhow I just installed a new cable today, thinking try the cheapest thing first. Guess what, still jumping so its the speedo. Leaning toward replacing it rather that try to rebuild. Under the best of circumstances I'll have a slightly cross threaded housing and a used but rebuild speedo.

Got the motor cleaned up, adjusted and lubed up. Apparently the led headlights are incompatible with the original relay, so I ordered a new one from http://www.headlightmotorman.com/ Arrived promptly and I installed it today. Great to see the headlight doors work again. I just need to reverse the output plug so they open and close when they should. Next up is the speedo. New cable installed, but the head still jumps and flutters. Time to r and r.

Moving along pretty well. You'll be outta things to fix pretty soon! Then what are ya gonna do?
I'd be interested in your speedo R&R procedure since my Dart's speedo does the same thing.

Got the relay wired correctly and the head lights function perfectly. Did the modifications at the relay so the install looks original but I get to keep my led headlights. Pulled the dash for the speedo AGAIN!

Turns out the PO was so rough on the speedo he actually bent the dash. What I found was one of the screw went in too far and was rubbing the rotating magnet slightly.

So I found a couple lock washers the right size to shallow out the penetration, and while I was at it I put some synthetic clock oil on the center shaft. Turns out a small 4sided tork bit is the perfect size to run the speedo, so I bench tested it and it runs smooth as silk. Imagine my disappointment when I installed the dash and the original cable and it still flutters. So I fitted the new cable on the speedo and put a drill on it and it works perfectly. So its either the cable or an erratic signal coming from the trans. My next step is to permanently install the new cable and see if that solves the problem.

Looks great Wayne! Mr Heaterbox up here restores guages and is in Canuck bucks. Pulling dash bezel etc sucks prefer to be "one and done" with that nonsense. Our speedo bounces at lower speeds. We put in a new cable around 12 years ago and never got it 100%. I may pull the cable again. My back is cringing thinking about it.
Keep up the good work

For me my hands are a mess so reaching up inside the dash and undoing all those screws is a pain. A lot of my research points to old lubrication drying out and creating friction spots. Some people use wd 40 do dilute and flush the old lube, and replace it with a very light oil like white mineral oil. I happened to have some synthetic clock oil which has a fantastic shelf life and is pretty cheap on Amazon.

Got the new cable installed and took her for a test drive. Speedo is smooth as butter! Of course while I was under the car I found the trans cooler line resting on the exhaust. Kinda hard to cool that way. And as I was installing the cable I reached under the master cylinder and my hand came away wet with fluid. Fortunately it was just the cover screwed on crooked. Think I'm gonna need a bigger pole barn.

My mom grew up around San Antonio. Awesome state. Little warm at times.

It's with amusement that I saw your garage pic. Charger, check. Yellow '69 Dart convertible, check. Cuda, almost check. And yes, they all live in a garage like yours. These pics were when I loaded them up to make the move from PA to SC. I'm gonna get concerned if you tell me there's a '67 Mustang or '95 LeBaron GTC convert in your garage too!

Scary! Cut from the same cloth! Wife had a Sebring conv, does that count?

I don't know how you guys can keep up with a fleet.....LOL, I barely have time to work on the ONE I have....And I'm retired! :)

Lol seems like a lot but ya keep knockin' them down and the.list will be single digits in no time!
For me the goal is to get them running and driving and then tackle the smaller problems 1 at a time in order of priority.
