Hello American friends. Just thought I would warn you about buying parts from Canadians.

I just bought a part from a guy in Canada. The shipment has been held up for a week now. Just got a call yesterday, they want a duty (tax) for the parts and the Canadian told them that I was going to pay it without warning me or giving me a heads up. This adds another $30 to the deal in my case, which if I had known, may not have made the deal.

I will not deal with Canadians any more, as I do not want to deal with the duties and arguing over who will pay them. I am not prejudiced or racist, just don't like getting hit with hidden fees once a deal is made.

FYI because our cars are made in North America, your not paying duties. Your prolly paying a broker fee from one of the shipping companies, UPS or FedEx. I've shipped a ton of parts via Canada Post - USPS and have never had any issues.

Maybe next time request that method of shipping to avoid broker fee's. Shipping will take a day or two longer though.

I've shipped quite a few parts to the states through the post office and had no reports of problems with extra charges.I've heard that some states will collect sales tax on new parts but I've never heard back from anyone I've sold parts to saying that this happened to them.I usually write that the parts I'm shipping are used when I fill out the form at the post office so maybe that helps...also,declaring the parts as a gift could be a way around that if it's a problem in your state.

Um…no. The seller didn't tell anyone you were going to pay anything. Duty and tax ares always paid by the importer. That's you. This is utterly standard for anyone bringing anything across any border, and has been forever. There is no option for the exporter to pay the duty or taxes; they're not his to pay. Usually you don't get dinged by US Customs on private importation of goods worth a small dollar value, but occasionally you do. In virtually every other country in the world, importers of any amount of goods worth any amount of money get dinged every single time.

Stop whining; you sound like a spoiled, overprivileged American.

What the heck does prejudice and/or racist have to do with this. Just by bringing these terms up in this thread you are showing it. You obviously have no knowledge of the similarity of the populace of both our countries.

Just remember good sir, that Canada is the largest importer of US products in the world. If we had the same attitude as you, your country's trade imbalance would be so lop-sided you'd be learning Mandarin damn quick!

Rant off

Your kidding right? You make it sounds like we are some rip off state. It is not the responsibility of the seller to educate you on these costs. Any Canadian or person outside of the US that has been in the hobby for a month or more knows that importing parts has extra costs. Sometimes mailing a part can circumvent these but often not. I've bought thousands of dollars of parts from the US and UPS (a US co) has made a fortune. The buyer/importer always pays shipping, duty, taxes, brokerage, etc.

I have had it the other way.I bought something from an American guy and when it got here,I had to pay an extra $20.00+.Us Canadians are good folk!! lol.Don't shoot us down too quick!! lol..

Umm Dan thats not entirely true. If you bring parts across the border yourself for shipping, you will pay a small fee $11 or so and it will be collected by the us border guards. This is called a commercial vehicle fee, charged to you because you are transporting something across the line I guess. Tax grab yes,but better than the brokerage fees ups and fedex rape folks for. I have been raped by both fedex and ups for broker fees and no longer use thier services. Mancini shipped me a book that cost me over $30 in shipping thanks to this little game that ups plays. The same book shipped by a private citizen would have cost about $7 in shipping.I usually include the $11 fee in my costs, but sometimes the deal is too tight and I pass it along to the customer.I have been told at the border by border guards (US) to sell my stuff in Canada,so Krazycuda isnt alone in his anti canadian sentiments. I didnt bother telling the guard I'd been trying to do that for 2 yrs already!

BUT; this is a huge one. The great depression of the 30's was greatly aided by this same sentiment. America closed it's borders in an attempt to force it's citizens to buy american. Very similar to what Obama almost did.

FedEx are sneaky bass-turds I paid to have a part shipped, got the part then a week later a letter in the mail demanding $9 in tax plus an additional $10 for the privledge of them paying the taxes at the border for me! I'll never deal with F(uck)ed(ya)Ex ever again.

Canada Post, USPS & greyhound or in person whenever humanly possible

I've bought from PG Classic Parts in Canada and have never had any of these issues.
Don't recall how he shipped to me, but I believe it wasn't FedEx.

LOL, nice one, Grant.

That's how it can go. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. At the US/Canada border, in either direction, the rules are whatever the guy with the badge says they are.

Hard to believe a line on a map can make so much trouble. Some one should go out and erace it. There, problem solved.

how do think everyone feels. if you don't ship it through the proper shipping carrier thats what happens. when i built my 416 i had to pay another 550.00 dollars on a brokerage fee from ups, isn't that an american company ? muscle motors had no idea i was going to be charged that and i didn't blame them, i could have had them ship it usps or canada post and could have avoided the whole thing. it's not the person or the company or the border duty, it's a handling fee ups, fed ex etc. charge you. so the next time you want to blame someone for your mistake, or country for that matter maybe ask if there are different carriers that could maybe handle your item.

I'm not trying to be anti-Canadian. My son's best friend lives in Ottawa. I like Canadians, I DON'T LIKE PAYING EXTRA TAXES!

I just started this thread to warn people buying between countries of the hidden taxes that may come up when dealing across the border.

There is good feedback stating to use the post office and not FedEx & UPS. My part was shipped FedEx.

I do not wish to start a name calling campaign between the Canadians and Americans. There is enough negativity out there (slantsixdan) that we don't need to fuel into a insult/bashing spree.

I have a few comebacks for slantsixdan, but I will just keep them to myself and be the man and walk away.

*****************************************************************

Let's just use the positive information that came out of this post that IF YOU DO MAKE PARTS DEALS ACROSS THE BORDER, USE THE POST OFFICE AND NOT FEDEX & UPS. This is good information and I thank the poster who brought it up.

There is a great knowledge out on FABO, and if you post your problems, someone may be able to offer some advice that will help or solve your problem. For all of those who want to bash and insult people here, just keep it to yourself. Take a 10 - 15 minute walk and calm down. Your insults do not help anybody or anything.

Guess what... The seller replied to my PM about the duties and said that it was supposed to be part of his shipping costs and is going to reimburse me.

It all worked out well in the end...

I'm not trying to be anti-Canadian.

I believe that but I'm just saying that Canadians have had to import parts from the US to get our restorations done and have paid taxes and fees through the ars for years. Many vendors will not mail parts. You don't see posting warnings about buying from US guys or promoting the buy Canadian slogan.

I really hate to do this as I'm really not that kind of person normally, but if you re read your initial post it does sound quite anti Canadian to me and not pointing out hidden fees; "...the Canadian told them that I was going to pay it without warning me..." Which was obviously not what happend as the seller made it right with you, right?

Also with statements like "I will not deal with Canadians any more..." and "Support your local economy, Buy American..."

Although I do indeed agree with your last statement buying local for the local comunity I wouldnt have posted it as it just leaves a sour taste in the thread.

I'm just saying

Kernel,

My comment about not dealing with Canadians anymore was directed about the duties, not the people. The guy I dealt with was very nice. I just felt a little taken advantage of after paying $70 for shipping and another $30 for duties. If you can do the math, that comes out to $100 for shipping.

As for the part about the Canadian telling them that I would pay the fee. That's what the lady at FedEx told me. It is obviously not true after contacting the seller as he was told that the fees were to be part of the shipping. Apparently this is a "standard lie" that the shipping companies use to get us to pay their extra fees.

Now that I know the regular post office does not charge the "duties" I will do business with Canadians in the future, just specify to send the parts through the post office and not FedEx/UPS.

Now as for you Mr. Kernel Sanders. Go cook some fried chicken and have a few pieces. Maybe then your mouth will be too full to talk and your fingers too greasy to post negative comments after I have already posted and clarified that I do not hate Canadians, it's the duties of dealing over the border that suck. So if you think that you see a chicken across the street when you look out the window, double check to make sure that you are not looking in the mirror....

youll find the majority of charges are brokerage fees that are combined with the duties which are the responsibility of the buyer and are NOT shipping charges.

When i buy parts internationally from Hughes, Summit, etc they quote shipping charges , and depending on the carrier - you contact them to determine your fees at the shipping destination.

as stated before ship postal when you can - the brokerage fees are absorbed by the carrier.

this is intrnational shipping not just us - canada

Welcome to our world as we have to deal with these issues a lot of the time when dealing with American sellers. The duties and brokerage thing is the ***** (we know) and sometimes American sellers will not ship USPS. When that happens we are left with paying the enormous brokerage costs or refusing the delivery and going to the local UPS/Fedex/etc depot picking up the item and bringing it through customs ourselves. In all of this I have NEVER asked the seller to share ANY of the costs as I know this is not his fault. Most American sellers are aware of this pain in the *** and have helped us out by shipping USPS. To them a big THANKYOU:salute:.
