I tried to rebuild my 2 bbl seemed easy but it leaked gas all over, when i stuck it on the car. I gave up, my car was messed up and would always die going around a corner, not starting, and didn't seem to have power, this is why i was messing with the carb today. I put what I thought to be a good carb on it but it fouled all the plugs, i then put the old one back on and now it won't stay running, i changed the plugs also. seeing that I am now out like 70$. I am just going to go buy a rebuilt carb. I am wondering if I go to the auto parts place get a new carb and 8 new plugs and throw it on will I be fine or will it still need adjustment? I don't have the 99$ an hour to pay some one to fix it.

No matter what carb you get,you will need to do some fine tunning.
Not to worry. These old cars are not complicated to dial in.
You are probably running a Carter BBD.Very, very simple carb.

Let us know what carb you get,and we can help you dial it in.

yes its is a carter that is on it, I will probably get the same one from Napa auto parts. I wish I knew someone around here that could help me in person, everyone i know thinks they know how to work on cars but can't, also I have hardly any tools living in an apt on a hill prevents me from doing more. Do I need a dwell gage to adjust? I tired the whole in find the middle point but it seems the carbs i had ran same no matter how much you turned the mixture screws. seems like I can fix everything else on the car but the carb.

What might have happen is you used the wrong gaskets under the booster. They give 3 or 4 but only 1 is right. You need to match up your old gaskets with the new ones and throw the rest away.

A rebuilt carb should only need the idle screws adjusted, maybe a metering rod changed. They will want you old carb but if you can mike the rods so you know which size you have it help.

Or get a 2 bbl 350 Holley carb that just uses jets and no rods.

nope but you can have the living room, if you can get the demons out of my car lol

Ok i think i found the problem, after pondering through numerous web articles i figured out how to adjust the carb, i noticed the curb idle screw was adjust in to far and the fast idle screw wasn't at the same point, so in turn when the choke opened the car would die. I adjusted that and know when the choke opens the car still stays running, its missing pretty bad still. I adjusted both mixture screws out 2 1/2 turns. If I put new plugs in will I be alright for awhile???

If you feel your plugs are foul, then yes replace them.
I like NGK's or Autolites.
How is the rest of your electronics? (cap, wires, points, coil, etc).
If you still have points,I recommend going to the Mopar Performance electronic ignition kit.Car will start and run much smoother.

To adjust the mixture screws.2 1/2 turns is a great starting point.
Warm the car up to operating temp.
Turn one side in until it starts to miss, back it out until it starts to miss, set it inbetween those two positions.Done
Repeat other side.
Sounds like you are doing good with your choke adjustment.Just make sure it is fully open when warm.

Have you checked for any vacuum leaks?
With the engine running spray some carb cleaner at the base of the carb,if the cars idle goes up you have a vacuum leak.Check all vacuum hoses for cracks, and replace if necessary.Any vacuum leak will lead the car to run as you described.

Last thing: If you already havent already done so,get yourself a manual on your car, preferably a factory service manual.

Make sure your choke is opening, sounds like that might be an issue.

Another thing - I recently had a problem with a BBD where it was flooding really bad. The floats were sunk, in other words the floats were leaking and flooding the carb out. Pulled the float and shook it next to my ear - I could easily hear the fuel sloshing inside them. Car would not stay running and was shooting sooty exhaust all over the place - aggghhh ! Threw a new float in it ($6.50 at autobone), reset the level and its running perfect again.

I'd persist and figure out what's wrong before buying a rebuilt carb. reman'd carbs like this cost a small fortune - > $200. These BBD's are easy and simple to work on as someone else mentioned.

good luck !

First things first, do a compression check and post the results here. No amount of plugs or carb rebuilds will fix a burnt valve or broken ring.

The points and rotor and cap was replaced a few months ago. I am going to convert to electronic soon, i am waiting for the ecu to come in the mail.
I just gave in and bought a reman carb, I don't have time to tinker with it. I bought new plugs also. I will put them in, in the morning. I know the rings are good the engine was rebuilt around a yr ago. I had my uncle mess with the adjustment screws because the carb was messing up and believe thats what fouled the plugs. The carb that is on it has to many vacuum ports and always had problems with it, I will put everything on in the morning and see what happens.
