Is there a "Guru" out there for the 4 barrel AVS Carter Carb #4612S?

I have a 69 Dodge Dart Swinger that I would like to run in SS/JA with a 340 combination. I am told the biggest issue will be getting the AVS 4612S to work. It needs to "massaged" but staying within the NHRA rules. Who is out there that has had success doing this?

Thanks for the reply.

Good question. Someone on here should know.

You may want to google F.A.S.T class drag racing. They need to make use of stock carbs too.

There is a guy that goes to all the Spring and Fall Flings (Swap meet area)and sells rebuilt Carters. Cant find his card, maybe someone on here knows who I am talking about, and has his number.

This guy is a Carter Guru. He would be the guy to talk to.

Any of the carb shops that deal in HP carbs, willys, the carb shop, even Demonsizzler that does the t-quad stuff. your probably going to have the throttle shafts and plates thinned, secondary spray bar modified, sec air door shaft and choke shaft thinned, modified needle and seats, flow evened out ect..ect...ect...

That "Massage" is more like re-engineering" the carb.

Do you need to stay with 4 actual bbl.'s or there stock diameter butterfly size?

Rule book says:

Must be correct year make and model for cars engine. Fuel or air bleed passages may be resized. Drilling idle holes in primary throttle blades permitted. Other modifications prohibited.

Seems very restrictive.

hi, best bet is a shop or person that specializes in carbs for stock and super stock. they know what is legal and can rework it, too flow more fuel. hedworth carbs is one place, deano's carbs is another, the carb shop maybe. ask around to stocker and super stocker racers who is the best. call retting bros shop in calif, ask for steve wann, he runs avs on his 440 b;cuda, runs , [email protected]. he's in modesto cal. car runs 9.54 @137.50 just food for thought.

So it sounds like the carb body casting must be the correct number for your car, otherwise pretty much anything goes. I bet the rules say a whole lot of other stuff must be pretty much stock as well. This works to your advantage. With a pretty stock setup, the factory carb should be reasonable right out of the box. Obviously get a Carter Carb book, google or whatever. Get your car to the track and start tuning. I bet you end up doing a whole lot of other stuff before you need to do something cosmic to the carb to squeak out that last hundredth.

Best thing would be to start talking to those who run that class and index (even the Chevy and Ford guys).

hi, the stock carb does not perform very well on a stocker or super stocker motor!! you can not rework throttle shafts, thin throttle blades, or polish in venturis, , fuel passages can be enlarged, rejetted, air bleeds reworked, they measure bores, and blades and shafts. a properly setup carb is usually worth
about 2-3 tenths. good luck.

I assume that in SS you must run the original carb with the limited modifications allowed or can I run something different.

hi, you must use the original carb or a legal replacement carb. look at the NHRA tech sheet on your motor, they list any carbs that are legal for you to use. they list casting numbers for legal replacement carbs. that is on the NHRA web site, have to look under lucas oil sportsman, usually you will find the listings neded. good luck.

as said above you need to find someone who is racing that combo in SS...

have a friend who just build a 70 340 Duster for SS/JA...using a carter avs...

ran it at the last divisional race in las vegas....

Bobby, did you get any help or direction from Fugly?

i believe the best it ran at the divisional was 11.10 ...

it was the first time the car ran...and the converter was not flashing high enough....only 4800 rpm...they wanted 5300...so the car would not 60 ft.

My questions about the AVS were trying to find out if I could run this combination. I have made the decision to proceed. I have contacted the resources you have provided me and will follow up as the build progresses.

Thank you for your help.

(Holy Form letter Batman...JK!)

OK, Cool. Good luck with this.. and.. if you please, DO follow up with pictures if you can! Thanks!
