Chrysler brings back the Dodge Dart

-
Because, realistically that segment of the market is not big enough for a company recovering from a very recent bankruptcy to worry about. I am surprised that they are even bringing the Viper back so soon. What you are talking about is a market that is OWNED by the mustang, which has built up a 46+ year following. It would have to be something very special to even have a chance at competing with the mustang.
The only thing OWNED by mustang is the school girl v6 market.Would you prefer them to sell just the econo cars like the dart that your complaining about.Brining the viper back is a good way to promote thier mopar power image again.

if its a RWD and comes with the 5.7 then it has potential,

but seeing what they did with the challenger, i think they should build a cuda, x the challenger, and make the dart look more like the 70s

Must be nice to be jaded. In total there were 68,650 Mustangs produced in 2011 (26,422 GT, 5,026 Shelby GT500, 37,202 V6) compare that to 36,791 total Challengers for 2010. You can call the mustang V6 a girls car,but its as fast as the R/T challenger, and gets better gas mileage. Not to mention thats its prob faster that whatever you drive.Im not the one complaining about the Dart,if you would read my posts I am actually a supporter of the new Dart.I feel like im talking to a rock here:banghead:

Stats pulled from this site: http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2011/04/05/a-complete-breakdown-of-mustang-production-in-2011/ and this one for the challenger http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Challenger

So how many cameros, bmw and other cars in that class was sold.exactly the higher dollar cars sale less,so yeah mustangs are save-a-lot sports cars.thats why there are so many v6's and by your numbers the challenger sold almost as many as the v6 so your point missed, nice try tho.

:sign3: Im done, you are obviously a 13 year old boy playing on daddies computer(I can tell this by your horrible spelling, and grammar.).You dont read my post before you respond,to show MY stupidity??? Hahaha Go kick rocks peter puff.

Chrysler products have been my favorite American cars since 1959. I always thought Fiats were pieces of sxxt and I still do. I bought a new DODGE truck a year ago and that was the last I'll buy until Chrysler is in American hands again. Looks like the blue oval is going to be the go=to brand.

You know I thought this also about the top ownwers but ever time i talk to ppl at chrysler they say they are seperate from (marcades, cerbus, fiat) and they do thier own thing. That being said the share holders, fiat now,has an input as to certain aspects. The cars seem to evolve towards the new owners.I think fiat will bring a low consumeing car to chrysler and they are bringing back the viper so dodge is still dodge they just have to put up with the new boss and his kids so to speak.

Fiat has the controlling aspect of Chrysler. Fiat has the final word on decision making.

Regardless, I'm glad Fiat stepped up to the plate to help Chrysler out instead of letting them die out.

Those of you hating on Fiat remember one thing...the guys that built the old Chryslers that you loved so much also drove your same old company into the ground. I don't know if that's the type of character I could stay loyal to.

The thing most dont realise is when mercades sold chrysler they had money built up.Cerbus(sp) bought chrysler and took the money and tried to force GM into buying chrysler because they own GMs finiance company and was putting the screws to them so when that didn't work they filed bankruptcy and the government bail out which made chrysler look bad and broke. When Fiat stepped in chrysler was treading water a little bit.Anyone criticizeing Fiat probably doesn't know how close Chrysler was to being a GM product. It came down to Gm was struggleing to so they walked away. One or two years difference and I belive it would have happened.

diameler is the one that drove chrysler into the ground.. Iacocca brought chrylser back with the K-car and mini van. then what was supposed to be a merger not a take over like it turned into happened. all down hill from there...

bottom line is chrysler was a foreign car while with diameler and is a foreign car once again with fiat. a toyota or honda is just as american ad a chrysler product these days. hell a camry is designed and built here. the new dart is just a stretched fiat.

Hemis are Mexican built, as are the 500's as are the Rams... The most "American" car company left is spelled "F-O-R-D." Like it or not, it is the truth

Chrysler was already in trouble when they allowed Diamler to partner up with them. If Chrysler wasn't so horribly mismanaged, then they wouldn't have had to put themselves out to Diamler. Same thing when Diamler sold out to the managing partners prior to Fiat. Why is it that American's can't run Chrysler, but a foreign managing partner can? Bottom line is, Fiat putting Chrysler in the right direction to survive rather than the American owned management allowing Chrysler to die out. I don't know, running Chrysler into the ground doesn't sound very American to me.

The new Dart is a stretched Fiat. Nobody is doubting that. However, it's consistent with what the original Dart was...compact, cheap and good on gas. That's what the Dart name was about between 64-76. I still don't see what the big deal is.

its still a fiat. people here bad mouth foreign cars all the time, hell theres a long *** thread going on right now here bad mouthing foreign cars but because fiats now wear dodge/chrysler badges its supposed to be ok? talk about hypocritical.

Yeah, I've read those threads and added my two cents as well.

It's just so unrealistic to say "buy American". It's true that foreign companies and cheap products have had an impact on our economy. At the same time, think of how many U.S. companies are on foreign soil wrecking their local economies. It's a worldwide cycle. If we were to say "no" to foreign business, then WE would be the hypocrits because there are plenty of U.S. products in other countries.

I'm just not content to let Chrysler die out. With regards to Fiat, I look to Nissan as an example. For the longest time, Nissan was the largest or second largest auto manufacturer in Japan (not Honda). In the 90's, they hit hard times and entered into a partnership with Renault. In the last 10 years, Nissan has brought back a better version of the Z and the Skyline GTR. So Renault's influence allowed Nissan to restore their performance roots supported by small and mid-size sedans which make up the meat of their core business.

I'm hoping Fiat afford Chrysler the opportunity to do the same. I think the common misbelief on this thread is that the Dart is a performance vehicle and the nameplate should be rendered on one. That's inaccurate because the Dart was originally intended to be a cheap, economical car. Now if they had built a FWD, econobox and called it a Challenger of Cuda, then yeah, there's a total misrepresentation of the original. But knowing what the Dart was in the 60's and 70's, I just don't see an issue here.

Heck, maybe the Fiat experiment turns out to be a failure. But it sure can't be any worse than what has happened with Chrysler in the past 5 years. I'm hoping Fiat introduces lighter platforms for the Hemi to restore the original muscle car roots - lightweight, power. They have allowed Chrysler to bring back the Viper. As I understand, it will be a V10. Fiat will continue to manage Chrysler, but I doubt it will strip away its heritage...just like what Renault did with Nissan.

Maybe, just maybe, it's because the foreign auto manufacturers have more of a diversified company?

Fiat also builds earth moving equipment, trucks, farm equipment, etc.

Honda builds bikes and small engines and are heavily involved in electronics R&D

Hyundai builds just about everything under the sun: from cars to large ships.

Saab is still building airplanes.

Subaru is a division of Fuji. Do a quick google search of Fuji. Everything from trucks to supplying parts to Boeing and Airbus.

When Benz took a walk from Chrysler, they also took Freightliner, Sterling (formerly Ford's heavy truck division), and Western Star. Freightliner, by the way, was Chrysler's most profitable division. Look at everything that Daimler has it's hands in in Europe.

The American Big Three aren't as diversified. They used to be. GM had Fridgidaire. They sold Detroit Diesel and it wound up in the hands of Daimler.

Ford sold New Holland to Fiat. They sold their heavy truck division to Freightliner.

Chrysler used to have their hands into just about everything, including missile and aerospace technology.

Now, though? :dontknow:

The new Dart is a marketing thing. Reuse the badge to make it recognizable to the American public, just as the Charger name has been used on FWD econoboxes to a 4 door sedan. The idea is to sell cars.

The sale of new vehicles helps us with our older ones. It keeps the brand alive and helps with restoration parts, aftermarket equipment, etc. Twenty years from now, if Chrysler was no longer around how well do you think you'd fair with the restoration of your A-body, or your B-body, or your E-body? These car are now enjoying a lot of support thanks to companies like AMD, Edelbrock, Soft Seal, Inline Tube, and the list goes on and on. One of the reasons is because the brand is still viable.

Bought any aftermarket parts for your Studebaker lately? How 'bout your Packard? Hell, for that matter, AMC? One of the reasons parts for these cars aren't so widespread as they are for our Chrysler products or Fords or GM's is because these brands are non-existent.

One of the things I find amusing about this thread is the narrow concept most folks have of the name Dart. It wasn't always used on the A-body. Hell, the name "Dart" was around before the A-body. Does that make the A-body not a "real" Dart by using the logic of some on here? After all, it didn't really carry a lot of the "heritage" from the original, except that it was essentially a small car, marketed to the masses as an what was, essentially, an econo-car with performance upgrades. Oh, wait, isn't that what the new Dart is supposed to be?

The Dart name has appeared on the front wheel drive platform, too. In areas other than the US. Just need to broaden your horizons some and come to terms with history.

View attachment mexican-dart.jpg

It's also appeared on other platforms. Lookee that, in other areas on the globe it appeared on an M-body wagon.

And not so much wagons, but an M-body with an F-body header.

you beat me to it! i was just about to say the same thing. the dart has had many forms. it is remembered mostly in its classic form, but it seems to be forgotten in it's many other forms. the first darts were big land yachts not as we remember them. as with anything things change. i hope it works to help save chrysler. they need another "neon" type car and this may well be it.

I love a good RWD car as much as anyone but I will say FWD is fun too, I love the new dart and think it could be the car that helps turn chrysler around. I would how ever love to either see a v6/v8 rwd option or a turbo 2.4 awd option added to it.

hmmm, welcome to 2012 guys and a global economy.

Companies are owned/partnered with european/japanese companies for parts and technology.
