Hydrochloric acid will bubble it off in minutes. But you need to dilute it to about 10/12%, and the fumes from the bottle will kill you. Well maybe not killyou, but if you get them in your lungs , you might wish you were dead, lol. If you spill it on your hands wash it off Immediately under running water, you'll be OK. If you get it on your clothes, say goodbye to them. If you get it up your nose, yur an idiot, say hello to Jesus for me.
Up next is Muriatic acid . This is ~12% or less Hydrochloric acid pre mixed for you. The fumes are still unacceptable to your lungs. It's a lil slower than the pure stuff which is like ~35%, but safer . When it stops smoking or bubbling, it has finished working, flush it down no problem. Repeat as often as necessary.
To keep the working fluid on the stain, use paper towels.
Do I need to mention ventilation? Install a window fan to get it out of the room. and a local fan to keep it out of your lungs. IDK if you can get a respirator. They don't keep acids on the shelf anymore, you gotta ask the department supervisor to get some for you. Hardware stores and lumberyards have it in the back. It is often used to etch Concrete before painting.

CLR Is about 2% Hydrochloric acid. Safe enough for most housewives.
IIRC Vinegar is a base, the opposite of an acid . I've never tried some of the other suggestions. Why would I if I know HCL works? It used to be like $5 for a gallon. You won't need even a quart, if you ration it out onto paper towels. I always have some on hand in case somebody comes for my freezers and stuff, lol. If you have left overs and kids, get rid of it, it looks exactly like water.

Did you end up getting this cleaned up?
I just randomly bought some Lysol Lime and Rust cleaning gel because it was on sale. The regular Lysol toilet cleaner does not touch the rust stains here but this Lime and Rust gel is AWESOME! Follow the directions of drying the bowl so the gel can do it's magic. I did not drain the bowl yet because I figured this was a regular cleaning but it even loosened the stains below the water line more than anything I have seen. I squirted under the rim and around the bowl after the toilet sat unused for about 30 minutes. Tens minutes later the blue gel is turning yellow and I can see the stains dissolving. After about twenty minutes I just used a regular toilet cleaning brush with a scrubber pad (I think these are called Lysol toilet wand) and all of the stains above the water line came off with very little scrubbing.

Remember the bowl too! I occasionally throw about 4 packets of kool-aid lemonade in the bowl and swirl it around. It's mildly acidic and will help clean the bowl out for roughly $1. This also works for the dishwasher.
Cup of Javex and a swirl. Hold the flush lever down just slightly to raise the water above the static flush line..

Do you know how many men that it takes to clean a toilet?I'd find a large woman with a sturdy right arm, and give her a red scotch brite too! And treat her to a large meal!

I'd attack that in a gross decon fashion first -- diluted muriatic acid and a stiff brush. Flush, repeat. Flush, repeat. Don't forget gloves, eye, and respiratory protection! Get it as clean as you can with that stuff, then finish it up with pumice. As stated, pumice stones are made for this, and blast through hard water stains like butter and leave the bowl looking like new. It's rather impressive.

Yup I've seen janitors doing hard water stains on urinals with the stones. A janitor is actually a high tech job, the good ones know what they are doing...public restrooms would get hairy quick without them...never bust a trashman or a janitors balls we need them...
Absolutely. Would you rather go a month without the fire department or a month without janitors or garbage services? I know my answer...

I don't think I took a picture of mine before but it was pretty bad like that one. Nothing was touching that staining but the Lysol Lime and Rust I posted did it. Give it a try. I am curious to see if it works as good for you.

The great thing is...no robot will take the place of a janitor!!
Thank you for saying what I tell my team often - let the customer go three days without you and see if the phone rings!! (I run the janitorial/ custodial contract on Hurlburt Field Air Force Base, cleaning 231 buildings)
