column shift

i have done a 440/727 swap into a 71 dodge dart, i used B-body hp manifolds. it all fit except i had to modify the steering column and cut it way back to clear the driver side exhaust manifold, this was no problem because this car has a console mounted shifter.

my question now is: because a 383 is shorter and narrower than an RB block....would it be possible to put a 383/727 into a 68 dodge dart and still keep the column shift? i have to have the column shift because i have a bench seat that i really like.......if i can't keep he column shift then i will stay with a small block, just though i would ask because i would like to make use of a 383 i have.

I have a column shift column sitting in my shed that I might modify just for kicks to see if an idea I have is possible. What I would look at doing is shortening the column, but from the other end (or the middle to leave the mounting brackets in the same place), and moving the shift arm that's in the engine compartment to the passenger side of the firewall. Then, I'd use a cable like aftermarket shifters have and run that through the floor near the bellhousing.

sure you can shorten the column...I've done a couple for 71 and earlier with a Hemi/automatic column shift...the 73 and later columns are already short from the factory.....just like some of us guys

the shifting portion in the column is collapable.....so just collaps a section (it has two) the same as amount as you shorten the outer column.....and weld /tack that section of shifting column solid

I put a 383 in my '69 with a column shift and had no clearance problems at all. I did use the Schumaker headers, not sure if I'd have issues using A or B body manifolds. Though spendy, the Schumaker kit with the headers, mounts & torque strap made the whole thing fit like butter.

I recently installed a 400 block in a 72 Swinger. Originally a /6 car and I used the /6 K member. Schumacher mounts, 68 B body HP manifolds, power steering, power brakes. Seems everything is a tight fit but the column shift linkage hooked up for me without a hitch. I really thought I was going to have to modify it but it fit like the factory built it that way.
