commando's vs. eddie rpm's

Just a differnece of opinion BJR, nothing more.

Yep I know, If you ask 10 different people you'll get 10 different answers, thats the nice thing about discussions, you have to look at them for what there worth and take what you want and leave the rest. It's up to the end user to make the choice as it's there money that being spent.

I just like to think that maybe along the years that I've spent with engineers and doing R&D that I may have found and learned somthing along the way. And thats how I've been able to achieve the numbers that others can't get.
As you've said before that I have the engine very scienced out, and the heads are making all the power that they can, but then I do all my engines this way, with this thought process.

BJR, yes, I did fail to mention the different mixing of metals (Or lord knows what) to come up with something stronger and denser. It may only be a matter of time before they make a aluminum head with other materials to be as strong and perform like iron. But right now, it's just not out there for the lil'guys like us here.

This is a great subject, there has been alot of debate about this in the pontiac community as well and alot of research/testing.It always seems an even split between those voting for bigger or smaller,I have to admit I tend to go for velocity over volume when I do any port work and I manage to get some pretty good power with smallish heads.I admit Im not reffering to absolute max power/rpm but for the street I love to have the response and the power.

I think the biggest problem with any engine building is the math can only point to one perfect setup for one constant combination. In any real world engine, there is no constant...lol. So everyone falls back on what they think might be best, and you get these disucssions. Any discourse is good. You never know when you get something out of it.

Not trying to hijack the thread here but it seems like the people who know heads are all reading this thread anyway, so I have an Edelbrock head question. Since there is no provision for the exhaust crossover with these heads, will an aluminum six pack intake manifold ever get hot enough to open the automatic choke? Can you just back it off a bit & get it to work? Or would it be better to just set it so lean that it never really does anything?

You could maybe use a later choke coil, one that has it's own heationg element.. Like a 340/360 style from after '71. But, you'll really need to try to fit things... It may need some fab work. Or maybe fit that heating coil to the 6bbl choek... Just throwing out ideas. I ran mine with the choke wired open.

I was just wondering. I'll probably just open it up & not worry about it. It's gonna' be a fair weather car anyway.

Who has the best price on the Edelbrock heads these days? Summit & Jegs are within a buck or two of each other at around $1360 a pair.

the ootb eddies nothin but lies ...lol this is my 408 with the eddies bjr did for me

Really, though, I have seen a hundred post's in here and around the web siting magnum heads as the best for HP 318 street engines, and far better than the 340 J heads I have now due to better velocity and higher cr, so why wouldn't the aluminum version be even better? And commando's better than that since I could use my new full roller setup and etc....?? If 302's were so good, mopar would remake them in aluminum instead of the one's they offer now, and even more the magnum 318 head.....Oh, I give up. I just want a badass 318 to drop in my cuda with aluminum heads and ripper street performance and feature quality details, I think we all would like to have a feature worthy car, some of you have been featured already, well I have a very specific picture in my head of the finished car and I will find a way to achieve it. I guess I will have to try something different! Now to figure out what that will be is gonna take some serious research.

I dont think you ned to look any farther than the production line. From '92 to I think waht, '04ish(?) when 4.7s started coming out 5.2L Magnums had the same heads 5.9Ls did. With no loss of power noted other than the lost stroke.

Yeah, I've had a couple 360's, and have my eyes on a 340, too, but there is something about 318's that make this a worthy objective. We'll se what happens.

I would like to find out what you guys think of the commando aluminum heads by MP as opposed to eddie rpm's. Different chamber sizes, different intake cfm, wonder if they might not be better for a small cube hot rod, asopposed to eddies with bigger ports, might have same velocity problems as j and x heads on 318- am I wrong? Similar price range. My car ain't a race car, might be quick but it's a driver. Would the commando's give me better street performance?

I run large port commandos on my 340 and drive it every day. The chambers were only 47cc's new but I opened them up to 53. I ported mine at home and pulled 287cfm at 550 lift. The intake port ended up being 193cc. The price has went up alot since I bought mine...I think there are 800+ now and I got mine for 610. The rockers are offset and I didn't like what was out there so I just got Jesel and never looked backed. Good heads in my opinion and also I kept the under size valve seats from MP so I had room for a rebuild down the road. I left alot on the table in terms of flow because of that. I think 300 would be easy to hit with the seats taking advantage of the 2.02 valve. Also beware of the valve stem clearance out of the box.

Good post street demon. You stayed with the smaller valve? Or theres a 2.02 in there to start with?

I stayed with the 2.02s(that's what the head was mahined for) but the actually valve seat is undersized for 2.02s. I plan to put in bigger valves later but I'm only spinning my motor to 6800 and I doubt I see much hp gain from another15-20cfm in a stock stroke 340.
