Hi all.
Just like to recap about these cams being noisier than normal. It has been discussed that the agressive ginds are to blame for this. Is this absolutely correct?
If I was to use Comp Cams "matching" lifters and springs would this help? Reason being is that I did not use any other Comp Cams product except the cam itself. Has anyone done this?
I would like to hear some feedback on different combinations used out there.
I am starting to think I have a problem due to this noiser valve train I have with this new engine.
My combo is Comp Cams XE274, Eaton Hydraulic lifters, Elgin (120Lbs seated, 270Lbs lifted springs), Adjustable cast steel roller rockers made by a local machinist hear down under. 7.300" push rods.

Kind regards at all.

The ramps Comp uses can be noisey, but many problems are more related to setup. Lifter preload needs to be right, and things like aluminum heads and the tall and thin valve covers on mopars can make the noises more prominent anyway. I've heard of guys having it perfect, and still having some noise, so the best you can do is get it all right, and it may quiet down. Also, any roller style rockers, add noises, and at certain rpms and loads, sound very similar to a lifter tick. They arent bad, just part of the "magic"...

I have that same cam. I'm useing comps lifters and springs and crane Gold roller rockers and shafts and Manley valves all in Aluminum Eddie heads and Chrome Mopar valve covers w/out baffles. I don't here any excessive noise.

I've run a few of them and know some people running them, and I've never heard any excess noise- I'd say check the pre-load

I'm with Hellofadart, MikesDuster, Mrspeed. I have one (XE275HL) and no more noise than the Purple shaft it replaced. Terry.

One more thing I just noticed- you don't have nearly enough spring pressure! You say you have 120 closed which is fine, but you only have 270 open?!- the cam calls for at least 340 open. I wouldn't feel bad about running even a little more than that. Are you sure that the springs will take that much lift? you might be having a coil-bind problem or a valve float- both of which will make an odd sound, just a thought- or maybe it because your upside down in Australia and that cam is a right side up cam not an upside down one-j/k :drinkers:

HAhaha :) Thats a good one! But I would like to go with Moper's theory. It all depends what you call excessive and acceptable noise. Yes you are right. The noise varies between certain rpms and loads. Mainly around 50 MPH which is about 2200 to 2500 rpm. At idle there is no noise. Up high rpm the engine is all one noise I dont think there is excessive noise ( quite exhausts do not help. You can hear everything). And it does sound like a ticking noise but all of them consistantly. I think the cast steel rockers could be making the noise. I have the Mopar performance black rocker covers on it. I don't know if that makes it noisy aswell. As far as spring pressure is concerned, I think 270 Lbs is quite enough for 5000 redline. 345Lbs is alot of pressure and promotes extra wear on lobes. Noise does not change if you put 1/4 turn or
1&1/4 turn preload ( I left them at 1/4 turn). Coil bind was at 0.540 lift which is well within spec. My other engine was much quieter but not as radical nor a Comp cam aswell. I suppose I am expecting this engine to be the same. NOT! I think I have created a monster. I think I should worry about breaking an axle instead.

I have some noise with the XE268H cam I have in my 360. I have magnum heads and Comp did not have a spring & retainer for this head. The comp tech line indicated that the Mopar Performance Magnum R/T spring would be suitable. I am also using Melling lifters.

I get some lifter clatter when the engine first starts after sitting over night that lasts a second or two. After that I get a very slight ticking at idle that has people asking if it's a solid cam. I do not notice any noise as the rpms rise.

I never got around to measuring lifter pre-load and after putting the engine together Ii was told that with magnum heads and lifts over .5" you need to check to make sure the push rods aren't hitting the heads. I will be checking these items this winter.

Pretty much everyone on this list plus Comp's tech line told me that the XE series cams tend to be noisier and the fact that I have 1.6:1 ratio rockers will make it worse.

I've run 3 XE cams in my engines, a 360, 440, and 451, a buddy of mine bought a dart with a 360, it had a XE274H, stock rockers, none of them made noise, 270lb spring pressure will be fine with that cam, my springs were 305lbs open with an XE284H and it was fine at 6300 rpm.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes this cam does sound a little on the solid cam caracteristic. I will keep monitourimg them to see if it gets worse or not. So far no problem. Pulled the rocker covers off and still had exactl 1/4 turn preload on all lifters. No sign of wear in that aspect.
Regards.
