Any interest in a dyno shoot out of a few popular SBM heads?

I’ll start by saying Hell Yea do it. And offer help if I can. I have a M1 W2 single plane I can send for testing if it helps.

I would like to see a W2 with victor vs pro dominator vs m1 dual plane . Curves should be wildly different.
I have yet to see any M1 dual plane performance results .
100% agree!

If I had my motor apart I would send you a set of J's as a "baseline".. lol

Would love to see this. Would be awesome to see ported SM vs. ported W2 vs. Promaxx shocker CNC vs. trickflow …and bloomers if a set could be sourced.
Haha. One can wish right?

The promaxx cnc and ported SM might be redundant since they’re both the same casting.
It may be interesting to see how much valve the CNC heads, though. IIRC, SM listed their CNC heads at 2.02 and Pro Comp as 2.08. Maybe see what flow and dyno results show with some 2.055 and 2.125 valves.

I've got a brand new standard port M1 single plane I could loan as well as a set of ProMaxx 171 (non-CNC) heads. Have an extra 340 block that I could "loan" if I can drop it off. Don't care to ship something like that.

The parameters would be a well prepared 408 or 416, forged pistons, 11-1 compression with a nominal 64cc chamber, solid roller in the 250-260 @.050 range duration, .640-.650 lift, and a rpm target of 3500-7000. The questionable part will be trying to keep intakes and headers similar enough to not skew the basic trends
That sounds like my engine.I'm running a bit more lift though. .668/.668.

Well, might change it up a bit, I realized I have a rotating assembly allready done for a stock stroke 360 I was going to enter in a build contest that never materialized. Anyone have any issue if it's a 365 instead of a 408?

i personally don't. i think that a combo that is more in reach of us average joes and typical pocketbooks would be quite beneficial.

don't get me wrong, i like the idea of a gnarly cammed 408, but a stout 360 is more of a reality to the wider audience.

I'm a big block guy (the only small block I have is a 273, sitting on the floor) but I'm curious. I might build a 390/318 for by 67 barracuda notch.

If that makes you less cranky or grumpy, absolutely not. :)

Good baseline mill to work with.

I'm off to look for a thread I can derail. LOL

Sounds like a fun time, it will be interesting to see how much rpm some of these heads can support on a 3.58 stroke.

I’m all for testing the W2 head against the other heads but I will say to be fair the W2’s should be the closed chamber version and not the open chamber heads.

Not because the OC is bad or anything else like that but because to do the OC head correctly you need the pistons to come out of the hole to get quench.

IOW’s the two different chambers require two different pistons.

@lead69 and I have discussed this many times and we’d do the testing if you were closer. We would do the testing but you are on the other coast.

So that makes that part of it difficult.

Other than the piston issue I think it’s a great test.

One more thing. Most of us watched what happened on speed talk with Eric Weingartner and all the crap he took about the testing being done incorrectly and how the results are not valid.

According to the arrogant pricks that hang out there any testing not done at the Pro Stock/asscar/F1 level then the results are meaningless.

So you’ll hear **** like that. And who knows what else the critics will claim.

Other than those two things I say it’s on like donkey Kong if you can get everything in order.

I may have to simplify the various heads to keep the variables more consistent. Maybe the first session I'll concentrate on the speedmaster, bloomer, edelbrock, trick flow and the pro max someone mentioned

Keeping the shortblock consistent may not give us optimal outcomes for each head but it will give us a better sense of how they compare .
Not having perfect quench can be overcome to a point by adding a little race fuel after baseline run .
The W2s will like more compression , cam and rpms .

Please give us your definition of baseline.
I bet there are more than a few guys here that would like to see your J heads.

The speedmaster and the pro max I believe are the same exact head.

Hey why not call Dave at Hughes and see if he'll lend you a set of Big Mouths? If not I'm sure someone has a set of Eddy's with a murdered short side turn.:poke:

i thought it was the same casting but the pro maxx has a proprietary porting program that gives it that exxtra?

either way, i'd like to see them stacked up against each other.
Didnt they have different levels of porting? Like as cast then “shocker” or something like that?

When somebody share's this type of info, no issues whatsoever. :)

in all seriousness, i don't have the slightest idea. i've only taken a cursory look at their wares.
