This morning I had to use the flashlight feature on my cell phone to get the truck out of the garage (long story), and I placed it on the back bumper....

When I got to the office I noticed I didn't have my phone with me, but I didn't think anything of it, as I've left it at home before accidentally.

And then about 20 minutes ago it hit me....

Tried calling myself with my work cell phone, and it went to VM immediately.

And I keep my personal cell charged all the time....

My wife works from home, and she just went out and looked for it in the driveway somewhere- no joy.

Looks like I'm in the market for a new phone.

(DAMN! I just lost a LOT of pictures!)

The side pocket on my carpenter jeans is the only reason I haven't done this a million times.

FYI, if you image search 'jeans with phone pocket', some of the lady booty that will pop up will brighten your day and possibly qualify as a preamble for divorce.

I wear Duluth Trading Fire Hose pants damn near exclusively, and they have that same pocket...

And I would have noticed the lack of weight in that pocket if I didn't always carry two phones with me (one personal, and one work).

Well that sucks, doesn't it?
Personally, I don't carry my phone with me at all times, I'm kinda old school like that.
I use my phone as a phone, a bit of texting, and a camera.
Again, old school, but my plan is cheap!
I use my desk top computer for all of my internet needs...

Yes, it really does.

I've been considering "dumbing-down" my phone, as I really don't need or use all of the "gee whiz" functions on it, and like you say (paraphrasing): "phone, a bit of texting, and a camera". I hardly ever used it for the internet, as the screen is too damn small, and my eyes ain't what they used to be...

What really hurts is losing all of the pictures that are (were!) on it. I don't do The Cloud thing, and I hadn't backed-up and/or downloaded my photos in quite some time...

It's my own damn fault, and losing all of those photos is a helluva lot more expensive than any replacement device is going to cost me.

Yeah, I hear you.
I use my desk top for precisely the reason that you mentioned, i got tired of reading a small screen and moving the page along back and forth so I could read it all.
I actually got eye strain doing it!
Now I exclusively use my desk top for everything internet related with it's good sized screen and no squinting or finger work to enlarge and move the screen around to read everything...

If you find a good dumb phone, keep us posted. I've been looking for years and it's been damn near impossible. The closest I've found are the Jewish 'Kosher' phones (No I'm not being racist, that's a real thing).

As far as a simpler phone, I've got a Cat S62 which is a 'Robust phone' like cops and construction workers use (There are several models of robust phones, and they are more than just a case and screen protector). I do construction, so that would make sense. It's less oriented to narcissistic teen girls on the 'gram, and more oriented to the real world because it's mil-spec drop rated, depth-rated waterproof, etc, and has a minimum of extra features. It is still Android so it's nice as far as compatibility, but those heartless pricks still do random updates all the time, that only mess things up and never fix anything.

At work (mechanical contractor) we all have Kyocera E7200 "semi-ruggedized" (Android) phones, and while our Techs don't care for them, we've had pretty good luck with them. But they're old and heavy....

I'm going to take-off from work soon and, using my wife's phone, see if I can't find the last location of my iPhone.....if I had the Find My iPhone app enabled, that is.

And, yeah. If I can find a good "dumb phone", I'll certainly post it here.

A few years ago I set my wallet on my tonneau cover and drove off.
On the way back home I passed something in the middle of the road that flapped when I passed it, thought it was a dead blackbird and his wing flopped.
Next day i couldn't find my wallet and had flashbacks to that bird in the road about 1/4 mile from home.
Went and combed the ditches but found nothing so I called the bank when I got home.
The bank told me someone tried using my bank card 40 miles away that morning, I was pissed.
About 2 weeks later it showed up in my mailbox, someone had found it on the street and took it to the post office.
Everything was still in it including credit cards.
I vowed to try to not set anything on my vehicles after that!
Hope someone finds, and returns it.

Well, if there aren't any naked pics of the neighbor's wives,............or You may want to carry, a bright flashlight, & check the bushes when getting Home..:p

shopping
Now you know why I bought this. Same size as a cell phone.

Hope someone finds, and returns it.
Thanks, but it's not looking good.

Yesterday afternoon my wife and I spent about 2 hours looking for it: our yard, neighbors yards, ditches along the local roads leading out to the highway; no joy. Late last night I even got out the metal detector and checked the ditch along the highway where I have to make a U-turn (really odd highway crossing) as there's much less traffic at oh-dark thirty- still nothing.

Rain moved-in overnight, and the phone is not waterproof, so I'm about 99% certain I can kiss all of my pictures good-bye.

Sorry to hear! My phone was run over by a big truck earlier this year, so I feel your pain.

Might I suggest using cloud-based storage in the future, so you don't lose pictures or files? It also frees up storage on your phone, because you can delete the images from your phone but keep them stored in the "cloud." Google and Apple both have free storage of something like 5 gigs.

Do like us old guys do Jim...this kind of goes back to the rotary phone video and the two young kids staring at it like a cow would to a new gate. Use a camera. Phones still work great bolted to the wall in your house. LOL

Sorry to hear about that. I know how you must have felt!

For the sake of privacy I purposely chose not to do a Cloud backup (I disabled it), and I doubt I'll enable it on my new phone.

Why? In the "small print" of the User Agreement that nobody ever reads, once you upload something to the Cloud you lose control of it. (Or maybe it's ownership, I forget). I doubted this for years, but then this came up during a discussion I had with a good friend who worked for one of the Cloud companies (a subcontactor company), and he confirmed that, yes. Once someone uploads a photo to the Cloud, they (the Cloud people) are free to sell or share it as they see fit. And I disagree with this.

(As a recovering Audiophile I don't "do" digital music or videos either, as I like to physically own my LPs, CDs, DVDs, and/or BluRay discs.)

Anyway, I dug my own grave as it were, and now I'm paying the price.

(Edit: My buddy Bill who used to work for the Cloud just shot me a text; "The Cloud is the Devil!")

Yeah, I was thinking about this last night Jeff, and I'm still kicking myself for using my phone as a flashlight. It's a phone, and I shouldn't have tried to use it as a multi-purpose tool.

Live & learn, I guess.

Quick update: I just back from the Apple store, and I'm back in business. No, they couldn't locate my old phone (the battery had died), and since I didn't upload my photos to the Cloud, they're gone.

At the risk of coming-off as overly sentimental, that hurts a LOT, as I had about a years worth of valuable photos and memories on there, and I told my wife last night I feel like one of our dogs has died.

Yep that's how they rope you in to a dependence on the damn things. Things that are that useful and don't get used up are a ploy for contractual payment for the rest of your life. It's not like refer or blow or even alcohol. When you use it up it's gone. Then you have to make a conscious decision of whether you want to go and buy more. The cell phone has the sharpest hook.

The "cloud" doesn't exist. It's just someone else's computer. Remember "The Fappening" in 2014? It was a valuable lesson that most people ignored. If someone sends me an important picture via phone, the first thing I do after storing it to the SIM card is download it to my PC. I use an old 14MP Kodak EasyShare for pictures, which also go on my PC. Stuff like that is backed up to both magnetic and optical media (CD) so if/when my computer tanks, very little will be lost.

My current dumbphone is a pile of garbage with a worthless camera, but it works as a phone. No GPS, no "find my phone", and no workable internet. It's scrap plastic that rings. My plan from Mint Mobile costs less than $17/month and I've never used 1kB of data. I've never had a smartphone, a.k.a. electronic leash, nor will I. I know too many phone zombies and don't want to become on one of them.

We have a few old flip-phones at the house I tried to re-enable, but all of them are either 2G or 3G, and that's no longer supported. And I really wanted to go the "dumb phone" route this time, but I have a LOT of things I need to get done, and ZERO time to do any research, so I just handed my credit card over and said, "Make it happen, same as my old phone."

So I have a new Apple SE phone, same as my old one.

But I'll be more careful to back-up my pictures (manually, onto our PC) this time around, you can be sure of that!

A cloud is an aerosol consisting of water droplets or ice crystals etc concentrated in a visible mass. If you ask your search engine what a cloud is you might find out 3 pages later after all the rubbish that as you say does not exist.
