So, after the long hunt and ordering 4 different sets of wheels, something finally made it to my doorstep a couple weeks ago. As some of you remember, I was looking for an 18" wheel that would fit a square and wide tire setup. Well, what I ended up with is this. They're M/T SC-5's. I'm running Dr Diff 13" disc brakes up front with his 11.7" disc kit in the rear. I'm running a full Hotchkis TVS and a stock length A-body 8 3/4 in the rear.

To see what I could fit, I borrowed my friend's Mustang Bullet wheel. It was a 17x8" wheel with a +30mm offset and 275/40/17 tire on it. Due to the short width of the wheel, it was actually narrower than a traditional 275 series tire. So, fitting them on the rear with +3mm washers, the tires barely rubbed against the leafs, so I measured how much room I had between the tire and the fender lip and found out I needed about a +18mm offset to perfectly center the wheel in the wheel well. For the fronts, I did a very very rough and general alignment (which is still pretty iffy because I was using some wood blocks and an angle finder on my phone to try to get the right specs) and the wheel setup worked perfectly except under full droop and full lock, so that's why I'm using the spacer to move the front wheel out a touch.

So this is my setup... M/T SC-5 wheels. They're all 18 x 9's, but I'm running a +32mm offset in the front and a +22mm offset in the rear. On top of that, I'll be running a 5mm spacer on every corner (so a +27mm and +17mm offset respectively). On all four corners I'll be running a 255/40/18 which is 26" tall. I kind of have a feeling these tires may rub, I just hope they won't. Lol.

I tried to simulate ride height as best as I can. The rear is pretty close to what I'd imagine ride height may be like, maybe even lower from what I've heard about the Hotchkis springs. The front I did after I installed my shocks and torsion bars so that's how low I could get it for the look test. I'd run it lower in real life. But all of my test fitting was done without the shocks and torsion bars.

This car will eventually be a cruiser/autocross/road coarse car, but for now it's only going to see the streets. I need to update the drivetrain and make it safer before I take it racing any time soon.

And I'm not really asking for your opinion on how it looks. I know some of you guys don't like big wheels (but big brakes require big wheels). I'm just posting what I have and how I got it just in case someone wants to measure up their car and do the same.

Looks great to me. It also looks like you need the wheels that big anyway to clear that caliper.

Yeah... The Mustang Bullet wheel I used, rubbed the caliper, so on mock up I cringed if the wheel ever turned. Lol.

They do look good. Your car, your choice. I'm not a fan of the large wheels on some cars, but they don't look too bad.

Why, the caliper would clear room for itself. :)

Nice clean conservative, yet functional look to them.
Not showy gaudy, but there to do a job and totally capable of it.
I like em.

Well, thank you all for your compliments. I thought I was going to be thrown in front of the firing range for this, yet this thread is still young. The only thing I debated now is whether or not I should remove all my GT trim. It's all fairly pitted and I'm missing the driver's door (door is from a '69 or newer car). The only thing I don't like about that is I'm afraid to find what's beneath the trim from the previous owner and I'm not sure I'll be fond of trim holes everywhere (not in terms of looks, but due to potential damage from weather).

Thinking it's just that long side trim needs to go, but keep the GT V8 on the fenders.

That's what I was thinking too.

Be a shame to have to do it, but maybe some average wheel well trim, or maybe none.
I think the chrome around the wheel openings would look good, but if you remove that strip then the front opening chrome won't look right there by itself.

See, that's a tough one for me as I don't like the completely blank looking sides, but taking that off a GT would be almost insulting it.

My car is a 73 Swinger and the only trim/chrome or badging on the sides, front, or back is the wheel opening chrome. (well, besides the hood edge)
I wouldn't like it as much without it, and I really don't want more than that.
(which is also sort of insulting it) :D

I like them, get some negative camber in there and at least 8+ caster and I bet you will have just some slight trimming of the wheelwell mouldings. Im setting at about 26mm with the spacer I have and I needed to air saw a little off the lip at top center because I would get a slight SLIGHT rub on driveway entry.

See, I don't mind the clean and simple look though. So, I would remove the wheel lip, side, and back molding. However, later on, after a repaint, I'd add a stripe of some sort or maybe a black hood. But I may keep a GT logo here or there.

The fender to wheel clearance on the +30mm offset wheel was perfect. I had it at full compression and full lock in both directions with zero rub. It fit snuggly in the wheel well. Since this is going to be pushed out a little bit, I'm a touch worried, but we'll see. But I committed to this wheel choice knowing I was probably going to do some modifying of the lip.

You can tell I like it clean, uncluttered yet lightly trimed.
Even my wheels are industrial looking with the black allen screws and satin black painted hubs instead of caps, so now I have a collection of chrome strips and stuff in the shed.

See, my Dart even came with a black vinyl top from the factory, but the old owners did a terrible job removing it and covering up the holes (not that I would have kept it myself). My friend has a '71 Demon and he removed and smoothed down his drip rails and molding. I like the white on it and I think I'll keep it similar to that; however, I'd remove all the molding, add a stripe (black bumble bee, maybe), and call it a day.

Mine was a black sunroof also, but at least they took it off and painted it before it was damaged underneath.
Oh, mine still has the vynl trim from the top as a break between the red and the white, and I'm good with that staying, but only because of it not all being one color.
If the car was, or ever was going to be one color it'd be gone already. :)

Like to see it on the ground, with a nice side shot! I'll bet it looks awesome!!

I like it, nice wheels, and good work getting it to fit... Brakes look great... I say try and get that pig a bit lower to really make the look.

That's the plan. Where the top of the tire is just about tucked under the wheel well. I just forgot to throw them on till after I installed everything so that's as low as I could get it (the body started flexing if I applied any more load).

You're not the only one. Lol. But I still have some things to readdress. Because the calipers are so huge and the Hotchkis UCA's have a large bend in them, I had to move the calipers to the front as they were hitting each other. Therefore some of my brake lines have to be remade. I also need to swap out the rear shocks (Bilstein) to my adjustable ones. Just little things here and there. But I'm so swamped I probably won't get to them for another couple weeks.

Will be looking forward to the pictures when the build is complete. Are you using a drop spindle with the new brakes? And what disk brake system did you say you went with?

Looks great to me....but then again i am running 18's on my dart too.
You either are into the big wheels or your not.Either way i love seeing member rides and keeps me pumped that one day i will be driving mine.
My wife always says i am addicted and I am always on this site
