Hi everyone,

I have a question and it is on the 1968-1969 Dodge Dart GT. I have found two GT's and both are saying they are slant six cars.

My question is can you tell me if they did put a slant six in a GT in these years?

I have not called about these cars yet but I also have a 1969 340 car kind of drop into my lap and I need to find more out about it. The car was torn down for a full restoration.

I'm really interested in the two slant six cars. How rare would the slant six cars be?

Thanks everyone.

You can get either a /6 or a 318 in a gt. if you have the vins you can do a vin search on this site and will tell you everything you want to know. Also the vin will tell you what motor originally came with the car.

the GT was only available with a slant six or 318 and they all had the flat hood ......what made GT nice is they came with bucket seats standard and most had a console but the console was actually extra cost option.

the GTS was the only car those years that had the 340 standard and optional 383.

a slant six GT is not really rare but is still mega cool

a slant six GT will have vin number LP23C or possibly LP23B

a GTS will have LS23P if a 340 car

Hey thanks everyone. I just wasn't sure on these and I like that it has a slant six in it. I have been digging the slant six cars the last few years. The one comes with a 340 style hood. The guy is asking $1800.00 for and it needs lower quarters not sure what else but I may talk to him this week.

I would love to have the 69 Dart Swinger with the 340. My dad almost bought one but couldn't afford the payments at the time. He married my mom and things were tight at that time. He went with a slant six Dart green on green and asked for a red stripe to be put on the car. we used to run into that car around town into the mid 80s to late 90s. How we knew it was his car was due to the stripe.

I will try to get the fender tag info on them and decode it. I have the books but just have never heard of a slant six GT of these years. I really like the 64-65 cars and love the 67's.

Thanks and keep the info coming. The one I see the inside of and it does have white bucket seats. I Think the car was original red. Also no console and it is a column shifted cars from what I can tell.

GT was the top of the line car

GTS was the top of line performance car

So not rare, just a nicer package from the factory, my guess the slant 6 was the base engine in a GT

Correct Mopar Men,

The 1968 and 1969 Dart GT was not a 'performance version' Dodge Dart.

It was only an 'interior and exterior' dress-up kit.

I had several 69 slant 6 GT's. All my 68's were V8's. They made them but were not as common in my area as the 69's were. Nice car. Steve

1968's

Dodge Dart GT's were available with either the; 170-6 / 225-6 / 273 V-8 / 318 V-8.

GT Emblems on the front fender 'GT V-8' and right trunk lid 'GT'.

All came through with Bucket Seats, and Interior 'upgrades', with a 'GT' flying-emblem on the front door panel.

The 1968 '273' was rated at 190 HP, compared to the 180 HP for the 1967 '273'.

1968 '273' - Hydraulic Camshaft, and 9.0-1 Compression Ratio.

Open-Chamber {60.6 CC} Cylinder Heads, and different Piston-assembly,
as the 'new' Flat-Top Pistons {Notched} were now above the deck {+.022"}

Overall, a much smoother running '273' than the 1967 and earlier engines.

I have a 1969 Dodge Dart GT that is green with white interior with buckets and the center console.
It has the slant 6 and an automatic transmission.
Minimal rust.
It is currently for sale

I would pass on both cars. I see thousands of dollars in rust repair on both.

Thank you and that was one of the things that was going through my mind on it and just really wasn't sure on if I wanted to venture in that far or not.

No real value in the 1968 and 1969 Dodge Dart GT.

One of our old Racer Friends had a 68 Dart GT, 273/190 HP 2-Barrel
with a 3-Speed on the Floor.

In 1970, classed in NHRA 'O/Stock'.

Bone-Stock ran 17.50's.

Popped on a set of Cyclone Headers,,,,,,,,,,ran 17.50's.

Part I

Just had to Post this, but one my Old Racer Friends did run his 1968 Dart GT 273/190 HP {2-Barrel}
3-Speed in {NHRA O/Stock} in 1970.

His 'bone-stock' Dark Red w/Black Vinyl-Top Dart GT ran 17.50's while classed in {NHRA O/Stock} in 1970.
{15.00 - 15.99 Wt/Hp}

Added Cyclone Headers, and still ran 17.50's.

Got his doors blown in every week by a 'race-prepped' 1965 Chevrolet Malibu {convertible} with a 283/220 HP {4-Barrel}
who ran 14.30's.

Then the Chevy Guy made a 'crucial' mistake, by calling my old Racer Friend's 1968 Dart GT 273/190 HP a
'pathetic pig' that should be driven by somebody's Old Aunt, and not on the Drag Strip.

Part II

Well, over the winter, he got himself a complete 340 Engine, a 4-Speed Transmission and 8 3/4" Rear-End from
a wrecked 1968 GTS 340.

He had the 340 'internals freshened up', including a Competition Valve Job, and added a Lunati 'Cheater' Hydraulic Camshaft. He also installed in the 68 Dart GT, the 4-Speed Transmission, with a Schieffer Clutch Set-Up, a Hurst 4-Speed Shifter and 4.56 Gears in the Rear.

To go for the 'full-blown cheater engine' he got a 318 2-Barrel Intake Manifold {#2468960} and had it 'Max-Ported'
and the runners polished for optimal flow.

For Carburetion, he got a Carter BBD #4422 {365 CFM} off of a 383/290 HP 2-Barrel, and had it jetted-out.

To look at the 2-Barrel sitting on that Engine, it looked like a 273/190 HP, and the Techs at Dover Drag Strip never
bothered to fully check out an 'O/Stock' car running for Class Trophy.

In 1971, the 1968 Dart GT 'claimed' 273/190 HP and ran 13.80's in 'O/Stock' - and demolished the 'hated' 65' Malibu
'convertible' every time they were matched up against each other.

I believe he won '23' Class Trophy's in 1971, and never lost, and was never 'protested'.
