A couple of years ago I bought a red '69 ragtop Barracuda, reportedly the same car used in filming the Doris Day show. The only hard evidence I have to that end is a CA tag ZCL-010 (with '69/'70 reg. stickers) matching the tag on the car in the show.

I also know that the car was owned by a police officer in Chicago, and ended up here in SC with a relative of his, who I bought the car from. Prior to that, I have nothing but the plate.

I'm trying to pull together the paper trail back to Doris Day, but am not having much luck so far. Was wondering if anyone had any information, or has had any luck researching this type of thing?

Thanks

Great story. I hope you find a happy ending.

Ooops. I guess that's why car was sold.
RIP DD
Doris RIP recently.....
I think theres a website "movie cars" or something like that.

If you have the fender tag, what is the VON (6 digits above the VIN)

If you have a matching broadcast sheet for it, what are the Y codes at top right?

Kinda grainy...

There can't have been very many red 69 convertibles with the tan deluxe interior (and a column shift if I remember the car in the show correctly).

Hug up to somebody at your local DMV who you think might help. Explain to them what you're trying to do. You'd be surprised how the truth works. Tell them you're not trying to find out any sensitive information, but only trying to trace the car back to Doris Day. All they would need to do is look in their system and tell you where the car came FROM. Then, you have the next step in the saga. .....and don't say you know where the car came from, because unless you've checked, you don't.

I thought she used a mod top in her tv show as well.

No Mod Top cars. In the first season she drove a green 68 & 69 Sport Satellite wagon. 2nd season, a red 69 Barracuda convertible with tan deluxe interior and wire wheel covers. In the 3rd season it was a red 70 Barracuda Gran Coupe convertible with tan interior and wire wheel covers. The 4th season it was a red 71 Barracuda convertible with tan interior. Not sure if she was ever shown with a car in the 5th and final season.
On the Here's Lucy tv show with Lucille Ball, there was a green 69 Mod Top Barracuda that appeared in the background in a couple episodes, along with a red 69 Barracuda convertible (with black interior) and a blue 69 Barracuda convertible. But Lucille Ball's car in those shows was a yellow 65 Dart GT convertible with black interior and Cragers, and later, a yellow 70 Satellite convertible. Not aware of any other TV shows from that period that had any Mod top cars.
The red Barracuda convertible on Here's Lucy may have been the same one that showed up on at least one episode of Petticoat Junction.
There was also a late 60's tv show called The Name of the Game, in which actor Tony Franciosa drove a red 68 Barracuda 318 convertible, with a trunk mounted luggage rack, in the first season, and a red 69 Barracuda convertible, also with luggage rack, in the second season.
A red slant six 68 Barracuda convertible appeared in the 1968 movie, The Mad Room, with Stella Stevens, and a red 69 Barracuda convertible was prominently featured in a Chuck Connor movie called Set This Town on Fire that was filmed in 69 but not released till it was first aired on TV a couple years later.

Don’t forget Mannix. He drove a number of Barracuda and Challenger convertibles. They had to change grilles and taillights on some of the 70-71 cars because the convertible was no longer available after 71, and they wanted newer models.

My daughter who is 18 now loves Doris Day we have been watching her movies since she was 9. Classy and funny lady. Good luck on your venture. May I suggest you contact her fan club. Those people are like us at FABO. They know everything about her FAQs

I was just being funny. I remember her well. Pillow Talk etc... Que Sera Sera....
Took in like 30 cats and cared for them later in life. Did very few interviews after she retired.

Whether TV or movie, she almost always drove a Mopar convertible on screen.

I don't have a broadcast sheet, but I do have the fender tag. The six right-most digits above the VIN (VON?) are 719893.

Not a bad idea, thanks. Can they look across state lines? I have it now in SC, and I know it's been titled in IL, and hopefully CA.

If that is a California black plate that matches the car and television show I would assume the California DMV could provide some help. The car more than likely would have been registered to a studio at that time and is used in the opening sequence in the show and appears to be San Francisco.
