Easiest 727/904 rebuild thread...

So what are you saying ?
I’m just saying there’s some great builders that transmissions are just a side gig. A guy with a lathe and a vision can create some pretty cool stuff. Don’t try this at home kids!! Some dark ages stock eliminator stuff ;)

Agreed ............ but still a little confused
He is saying there are some great builders out there who just work in their own garage.
I have a friend who used to run a Daytona
With a 727. That car won the $10,000 nationals one year at Norwalk and runner up the next year. The car ran 8:60s in the 1/4.
He rebuilt his trans when required, outdoors on his incredible workmate. I **** you not.
Check out the photos in my signature.
All done on a friends lathe by me.
I don’t own a business. Here are some picks
Of my recent 904 mods. An example of what can be done at home. My first rebuild in high school did not work. No drive in any gear. 43 years later, I do this now. Sorry jpar, not trying to hijack your thread, just proving your point. By the way this is a through the converter in the pits cooling mod from an external electric oil pump.

Holy krap! we have a rocket scientist in our midst! Cool stuff Duane!! Thanks for sharing.
the “Swiss cheese” direct drum came out of a trans I bought from a friend who bought it….. I wish I had more picts from it. There was a lot of time spent lightening components. Probably not the safest deal, but still pretty cool.

….and I still confess I know enough about torqueflights to make me a danger to me and others close by, but the fun of helping a dejected friend make the call to quick 16 the next day using swap meet parts is a lot of fun :)

If you look in my signature I think there are still pics of my rollerized components.
Not hardly rocket science, more like copy cat
and not being afraid to try.

and I don’t think I know this CFHJ guy…. Seeing he’s from Hemet I imagine we know people from the mopar circle

I may not know everything about rebuilding transmissions but I look good doing it...

Okay moving forward took my power wagon out for a drive today (that has the 727 I rebuilt that works flawlessly...) And was able to get it out of the way of my workbench to use my vice..
I took a picture of the specialized tools as well LOL...

At this point the pressure plate in the bottom or piston I think it's called just slides or pulls right now. There's a seal on the inside of the drum itself around that center piece where the snap ring came off. It's lip faces down and then there's a lip seal around the outside of the piston... That's probably only goes up and down maybe a quarter inch or so to lock the clutches and steels together...

So to recap if you're rebuilding the entire transmission you're going to want to replace the brass bushings if they have uneven wear or any wear... I've done it many times without doing the brass bushings so they usually look fine.. the rebuild kit should have all new rubber seals and ring seals and also new clutches and steels. At this point if I was rebuilding this as a long time keeper I would change all that stuff but as it is everything is looking good and I'm just going to put it back together. I will get a new front seal and rear seal tell house and gasket and front pump gasket. Also a front pump lip seal likely...
So I have to work tomorrow but Friday I'm going to dedicate to cleaning the front pump and the drum right behind it. After cleaning I will assemble those...

So do you build in subassemblies ?

So do you build in subassemblies ?
Absolutely.. I keep everything in order... I will clean and reassemble the first two parts and place them in order on clean paper towels... I'll continue like this until all the parts are back in order cleaned and reassembled in order. Then I'll give the case and tell housing one final clean and start assembling things back the way they were..
The most simple process I can.
This particular one is not what I would call any kind of rebuild it all just a check and clean.. it's not a transmission I plan on keeping for a long time, just plan to use for a short amount of time.. but I want to know what's going to work...

Of course the guy who sold it to me said he drove the vehicle home and it worked just fine but Lord knows how long this is sat in one of his sheds and this is the kind of thing that happens when they do. It's going to benefit from a good cleaning and probably last a good long time..

Okay it looks like I may have lied LOL.. I got sidetracked with some other stuff today so don't worry Monday I'll get back to it. I have to work this weekend....

Sorry men life got in the way...
I don't think I'll be more than a week and I'll be back on this project...

Got back on this..
Got both of the drums cleaned out and I took some 600 wet sand and cleaned up the steels cleaned up all the seal ring seals and put everything back together. Now I just need to clean up the rest of the parts and tomorrow I'm going to grab a front and rear seal both the pump and tell housing gasket and the seal that goes around the outside of the pump. Oh yeah and a pan gasket. Without the pan gasket the guy said about 14 bucks.. all the clutches looked in good condition. Out of cleaning stuff out and some very mucky stuff in there from sitting for a long time...

So now everything's back in order that I took it out and it's subsections..
Even the small subsections could be taken apart even further for inspection or cleaning but again this was just a get it cleaned out reuse everything I can on the cheap kind of refurbish free clean out so definitely when I put fluid in it it will work...
If I was rebuilding this for a long-term like I've done with the other ones for example my power wagon. I would change every part that came with the rebuild kit and inspect anything else as well...

On the last picture you can see little jar of Vaseline there. I just smear that everywhere on all the seals and all the places where everything's going to go together and some of the spacers and washers and stuff I put on there to keep them stuck in place. I have a picture of taking one of the parts and putting it over top of the front main seal on the pump and using it with another piece of metal to tap on the seal. Also pre-meshing the clutches outside the transmission so when you put them in they just go in much easier. Also I held all the guts of everything in there with the front band just like when I put the pump in with the band tie I tighten the band just by hand to hold everything in while I put the pump in. I used a long Phillips screwdriver ran it through one of the bolt holes and used it as a guide to slide the pump on so that bolt holes lined up with the gasket.
I didn't do a official reading of the end play but it was a bit sloppy but that's how it was when I took it apart. It's known for these to have quite a bit of end play. I think officially it's somewhere between 50 and 100 thousands...
Since everything was clean it just kind of click click click back together. When I cleaned up there was no extra parts laying around LOL I just put it on a piece of cardboard on a little roller and rolled it back into the corner. After I pulled the engine up off the floor and put it on an engine stand and tear it apart and get it back together and I get ready to make these two together I'll go ahead and get the valve body cleaned out and a shift kit put in it...
Oh yeah I definitely went and got those gaskets and seals that was $17 and change...
