Easiest/Cheapest way to a 4bbl 318?

-
Yes,you do it for more compression and you have to cut the intake side if the heads like i was saying.

You could just run the brand new head and use a thin head gasket.
The new heads will have been cut most likely to true them up and with the new head gasket being thinner, will give you a little more compression.
This is going to be a really good running engine because of all the parts being matched up so well.
If the compression is a little low, it will still run good for you, and make good power.
With this maybe being one of your first engines, don't go trying to make one thing really modified and forget about the rest of the car.
I would take a set of 4.10 gears over a little more compression any day.
Just fix your engine with the new set of heads and a cam\intake\carb\headers and a performance exhaust system first and see how much you have left over for a good rear end.
A stock engine with a good set of gears will keep right up with a modified motor with no gear at all.
This is something to think about.

Ok, it's all coming together now...I think.

I noticed that the 318 heads from AeroHead that you linked come with the 1.88 intake valves AND springs that are good for up to 0.509" lift. It's going to be hard to beat the price of those. The other good thing is that they are based out of Indy which only puts them about 2 to 2.5 hours from me.

It doesn't say anywhere on their website so I guess maybe I'll ask if they are the 302 castings or something else.

Some good info in this thread for my little truck's 318. Thanks guys! :D

They are open chamber heads.(rebuilt 318 heads from areo)
---------------------------------------
If you want closed chamber heads then just get the new rhs cylinder heads from areo racing with the stock valves.1.94/1.60
I think a set is $950 complete.
Then run a edelbrock air gap intake.

You don't need closed chamber heads.
If you don't care about spending money then get the high performance rhs closed chamber heads.
I thought this was a cheap build?????LOL
I know you where just wondering if they have that 302 casting in stock, but if you start spending more and more money ,you will run out of money faster then you think.
Do yourself a favor.
Sit down and write all the part prices down in a 1,2,3,line per line list.
Post it on here, line per line and the prices along side each and every item.
WHY YOU ASK .....because you will find out how fast it all goes away.

Don't built the fastest wheel in town that has a flat side to it.
You have to have enough for a complete wheel or it won't roll to good.
Just trying to be funny.:-D
Ask areo if they have a set of 302(late 80's) or-- 920(1967 heads)--in stock.
Hey you never know, but how much more are they is the question.
Just do the list \\ this is for your own protection.
Man ....your a typical hot rodder......LOLOLO

Yeah, yeah I know. When I think I have my mind made up on something I start to think "Well, if I do that then I SHOULD do this...what does another $1,000 on the good ol' plastic really matter." :)

Ok, so to summarize again:

AeroHeads (or use my current ones with some upgrades) $400
Holley 670 (already purchased)
Edelbrock Performer (hoping for a deal) $150
Cam & Lifter Kit $200
Headers (assuming I get the ones that fit) $400
Exhaust (guessing here) $350

For a total of $1,500. And if I stay with my $2,000 budget, that gives me about $500 to spend on other things.

You think $500 will be enough enough for gears and a posi unit for my 8.25?

I would get the engine done first and and bolt the headers on.
Start the engine and break the cam in and when you have it running good and you have no leaks, take it to the muffler shop.
Your car will run fine with the gears you have in it for now, but just try to do everything as cheap as possible first with the engine and exhaust.
Don't order anything ,other then the stuff you need to get all this done first.
THEN.........see how much money you have left over.
ALSO.............
You have to buy a new timing chain set.
Fuel line for the new four barrel.
A four barrel air cleaner.
Plus all the gaskets.........intake\header\carb\cylinder head\valve cover\timing chain cover gaskets and crank seal.
antifreeze\oil and filter\plugs
You can find headers for cheaper then $400.
Some shop should be able to make up a exhaust system for about 150.
This a system with no tail pipes and $29. mufflers.
Should cast no more then $220.00

Randy's ring and pinion has pretty good pricing.
Ring and pinion $155.00 per set.
Posi...anywhere from $380 to over $600.
It depends how many splines your axles have.

You will most likely have to pay a shop to install the new gears.

I got the cost of the headers from this thread http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=117489 where they were talking about Doug's headers that actually fit without having to manipulate a bunch of other stuff. Of course, now that I am looking for them, I don't see anything near that price range.

The Patriots and the Summit headers are cheap, but I'm guessing this would require raising the engine up to get them mounted? It's also a PS car, so they would have to clear that mess.

I tried to shoot a bit high on the costs because I knew there would be other small stuff (fuel line, breather, etc) that you mentioned.

The good news is that I know at least 1 person that has a whole lot of experience with gears and rearends. So, hopefully that won't be too bad.

You can buy a posi, but it wont fit.......

Do what Ma Mopar does, and throw in a Sure Grip......

Car will be much happier that way ...........8)

Well, when I said "posi" I meant "Sure Grip". Aren't they different names for the same thing? Limited slip units right?

Now that I see your smiley I think maybe you are just F-ing with me.

Posi equals chevy.

Sure Grip equals Chrysler.

We prefer Sure Grips around here.

Oh GOD, I'm sorry. I promise I'll NEVER make that mistake again.

In that case, the only time I would use a posi is if I bought a 67-69 Camaro and dropped a Ford or Mopar engine in it :snakeman:. I'll have to win the lottery of course, but I have been wanting to do something like that for so very long.

Cool dude. Just trying to help you look like you know what your talking about, amongst the Mopar faithful. We can take it pretty serious at times.
Nice project by the way, good luck with it.8)

Ok, I just scored the intake. I really thought I was going to get it for about $125, but there were some lurkers bidding on this thing. Considering the condition of it though, I don't think I did too bad. $157.50 + $26.90 shipping.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290487955510

I noticed the Weiand squarebore/spreadbore adapter was quite a bit cheaper than the Edelbrock...anyone know if I can use the Weiand adapter on the Edelbrock intake?

Why an EGR intake ?

You still have to run smog on this car ?

I don't have to, but I figured it wouldn't matter as long as I plugged the EGR ports.

For the price (versus new anyway) I figured I would jump on it. A lot of the used ones I've seen look pretty wrecked and/or have been repaired and this one looks almost new.
